I'm afraid that I lost the page from when I took the quiz. I'm bummed
that it didn't tell me how many and which ones I missed. There were two
words there, one which I was supposed to match, and one that was one of
the choices, that I had no idea about: avulse and fugacious. In
retrospect I should have been able to parse the root of "fugue" out of
fugacious.

I think that the quiz should also take the time you take to answer into
account. I am a lot more fugacious answering the words I know, than the
ones I need to figure out by parsing their roots.

I think mine was 29,000 and something. Something like 0.12% IIRC. They
didn't really get challenging until about 30 words into it.

Bob, just out of my never ending curiosity, I've taken the test that
you indicated. I got my result at 21,400 words, which puts me just
above the bottom level of native English speakers (said to be between

This is extremely fascinating. I've bookmarked this page as I am going

Ditto 30150. I missed one (or maybe not) when I clicked on one answer
before I had even read the stem or answers.
I wonder to what extent there is a speed component to the scoring “system."

I'm guessing there must be some kind of time element, because there was
only a single word that I didn't know right away, but some of the
antonyms/synonyms offered were somewhat strained; had to think for a few
seconds on some of them to determine the least worst choice.

There is what I believe to be a more accurate test, relying on honesty, here.
It also discusses the methodology used, and feeds the results back into itself

It's actually an American test but we can forgive a few spelling mistakes...

I'm not sure that some of the options are the best syn/antonyms to offer and
I've no idea what the scoring system is but it's reasonable fun.

That's part of the point. One has to pick the best match, I didn't see
any were there were two close matches that required any real judgement.
The words to choose from were just obscure.
