Thanks all.

The SO just finished a call from the company and we have those last
two runs available if we want, and we said yes.

Now there seems to be a ~however~ here now. Sounds like the other
drivers affected by this mass move, when called just grabbed any run
they could think of, and now a lot of people are rethinking, quiting
and such.
Recruiter has us on stand by for Stouffville runs and she seems fairly
confident something should come up in our area, which is preferred as
then i don't have to spend 1/2 a weeks pay on gas to work..
Whats that tell you about 'the company' when people quit before the

Re: OT Ouch

2010-04-14 Thread Paul Sorenson
That's because they *are* nothing but minor politicians. Years ago, in
the small town that I grew up in, a local businessman provided the
school buses for our school district. A small business that employed
maybe 1/2 dozen drivers plus himself. He was making a living at the
business but not gouging anybody, either.

A hot-shot young lawyer moved into town and told the school board they
couldn't just hire him year after year without competing bids. The
following year a large bus company with state-wide contracts out bid him
and literally put him out of business. I don't know if he ever
recovered financially from that.

I was simply amazed that they thought they could lower the hydraulic tray
with part of the piano still over the floor of the moving van.

If they had manoeuvred the piano to be facing even say 45 degrees from the
position they used it would have been practical as the trolley would have
still remained on the tray and the piano would have cleared the floor.

If I had been there when the second pic was taken I would have just walked
away - did he think that he could push that trolley under the piano?? OR -
maybe the guy balancing the piano walked over to the tray controls to
re-lift the tray to correct the initial c*ck-up?

Just so sad to see 'Specialists' getting it so stupidly wrong.

 Rod

Indeed. There's just been a series on UK TV about specialist moving. Things
like buildings and even the locos that George Sinos documented here. Ever seen
a runaway building? We'll just hold it with these 'dozers. Oh, the 'dozers
are moving now. How about a loco that might get swallowed up because the
movers can't be bothered to look for the fuel storage tanks that might still be
there? Put these metal plates down to spread (the now increased) weight.
Power cables in the way of the railway station building you are carting across
town? Just get a guy to sit on the (metal) roof and pole them over. No need
to switch off. Tastes just like chicken.

I can't believe they had any insurance. They certainly had spurs.

This company is based in Chiswick, where I used to live, and I hired them
to move a slightly less expensive piano a few years ago. No problem at
all.

The interesting thing is whether this will damage their reputation, or
bring them more business. The publicity (BBC, national newspapaers, etc)
was pretty cheap at only 25,000 pounds. They'll probably do pretty well

You know a few words would go a long way towards letting folks know if
they wanted to read an article about an expensive piano falling off a
truck.

Going by the news article: I would think that the mover would be
responsible for replacing the thing. Although, IMNSHO, anyone who would
have a $75000 (my wild guess at the exchange rate) piano moved in an
open truck deserves to lose it. Probably were not willing to pay what it
cost to have experts move it. I would not be surprised if the insurance
people refused to pay anyway.

RE: OT - ouch

2007-04-11 Thread Rod Connan

Rod
