I like it, especially with the graffiti in there. There's something
about comandeering the art of others (if one considers grafitti to be
art - I'm not so sure, personally) that's pretty cool.

Love those snow-covered trees and the thick blanket of snow along the
top of the wall - it all makes for great comp, IMHO.

The northern CA ski resorts are well under operation at this point and the snow

Thanks Paul, Henk, Dan & Alan  and anyone who comes along later :-)

Henk -  I have much better storm shots than this.. well, at least a lot
I like much more myself.  That corner store is in the last of a number
of reimaginings
in the 52 years I've lived here..  This is the worst. the hidious sign
and lights are on all night..and it's style is definitely not in keeping
with the lovely old
brownstones on our street that are landmarked.  It used to be a store
that sold fresh veggies, bread and packaged food, ice cream etc.. more
of a bodega

than a vape shop.

Alan, a gold mine?

AFAIK Classic Pan was made by Forte in Hungary, and branded by Classic
Film, reseller of interesting emulsions. From Mark's comments, it
looks the new batch is the old Forte again (which is good, it's a nice
film!). Although before the "production hiatus", friends ordered their
Fortepan 400 once again (like we did before), and once again they sent
them Fortepan 200 instead (like they did before...). Refunding it all,

Re: PESO - Snow Flea

2005-03-29 Thread Mark Cassino
Hi Keith -
I was testing out JandC's Classic Pan. It is an older formulation B&W film,
reported to be re-branded Forte Pan (?). They describe as a 'high silver
content" film and liken it now discontinued Kodak Super XX (before my time -
I never used it.)

It used to be dirt cheap but is now moderately priced. I shoot it at ISO
100 with a long, low agitation, high dilution development process that give
great results - excellent latitude with great detail from the deepest
shadows to the brightest highlights, good grain structure and acuatance.

I really like APX 100, which I use when CP200 is not available, but like the
results from CP200 better. The negs are fairly dense, and even on the light
table you can see the excellent detail. As noted in my earlier post - the
factory shut down due to financial problems a while back, but is back up and
running now and the film seems unaltered.

FWIW- the "Pan" in these films names refers to "Pan Chromatic" which means
they respond to the full spectrum of visible light. Really old emulsions and
some specialty films are sensitive only to a portion of visible spectrum,
most common being blue through green.

Hi David -
Thanks for the comment - it would be a feat to get one of these balanced on
a snowflake, but they are about the same size.

You are right about the chromatic aberration - I had not noticed that.
Interestingly, I can't see it after opening the raw file, but I used the
'shadow's tool in Photoshop to bring up the detail in the dark insect, and
the seems to have made the CA pop out more. I'll check out Panotools since
I'd be more or less guessing on how to adjust it in the PS raw converter

Hi gang,

Today I finally got around to play with real snow in front of my macro
setup.

After sifting through the results, this is what's left:

http://www.oksne.net/foto/html/images/snow/images.asp

I've tried two optical combinations today. The M-28/2.8 reversed on
bellows is quite nice, but it's a real PITA to work with bellows and
manual apertures. Especially with thick gloves on. The upside is that
the bellows allow varying magnification.
The other combination, A*200/4 with a FA50/1.4 reversed is still my
preferred combo. However, I do stop the reversed lens down from 1.4 to
2.0. According to the books, the reversed lens should be used wide
open, but I find that stopping the FA down to 2.0 improves constrast a
lot.

Enjoy,
Jostein

Nice. Snowflakes are quite amazing, but what's even more amazing is
that more than one list member is willing to devote the time and work
it requires to accomplish this type of photography. Well done.

Thanks, Jens!

I absolutely agree about the background. I'm experimenting with different
lighting techniques to achieve both a better background and more detail in the
surface of the crystal.

I would love to see a photo of that thermometer covered up somewhere

Bit confused. Your flickr gallery has a different name than what you use
here and in the annual (great gallery, btw, very impressive).

I like the dogs, especially the last one, great action and think the
playfulness of all of them is great.

But a little to high key for me, I can barely see them. Barely. I
realize that was probably the intention, just having eyes and some dark marks
show,
but it makes me have to look too hard. To strain. Just a tad more gray, a
tad more detail, they could still be high key, and I'd like them and see them
a
whole lot better.

tamo neki is serbian for spanish un tal. there's a cortasar's book "un
tal lucas", which translates as "tamo neki luka". dropping the name
luka gives me this - sort of a pseudonym. sorry if it confuses anyone
:)

about the whites, that was the intention, but there is tonal gradation
- maybe your monitor is less than perfect - check the histogram,
you'll see there's very little or none pure white. i can see the dogs
body lines, they are just a little darker than the snow.

btw - i've been waiting a few weeks for a sunny snow day (there was a
lot of snow, but heavy overcast skies) to make some photos just like
this of my dog - this nice alaskan malamut that came buy was a great
bonus :)

thanks for the comments,

This really demonstrates the issue I raised earlier about inexpensive
Twisted-Nematic LCD monitors. If you alter your vertical viewing angle
(below the monitor looking up at it, for me) you *can* see the shades of
gray and make out the outlines of the dog's bodies.

I think these images would benefit from being printed.

I doubt that that other dog was an Alaskan Malamute. Most likely a
Samoyed or American Snow Dog. If a Mal was that white or light, it
would be an albino, and have red eyes.

But they are pretty dogs. What breed is yours? Almost looks Dalmatian

Okay, that explains a lot.

I have no idea what all those acronyms are anyway. When I was buying my
monitor (hmmm, about three years ago), not sure they were being promoted as
much
then as now.

I didn't get the monitor for photography per se, while I like to take
photographs, not all my decisions are really centered around that. I got it for

readability, since I read and write on the Net a lot. And I am not always
willing to drop big bucks just for a hobby. (I've already dropped enough.)

Maybe I'll google someday and find out what IPS is. ;-)

I much preferred CRTs to LCDs anyway, but when I went to buy my monitor you
really couldn't find any CRTs locally. I still would prefer a CRT. :-) I
don't like the angle thing on an LCD.

Obviously there's a lot more to this, thanks for making that clear.
