In many rural areas of America, abandoned structures like stores or barns or even houses are simply left to slowly decay rather than being demolished. This is probably because in rural areas land is not at a premium and can be left fallow for years. I fins them because I like to ride my motorcycle through these country roads, and I find many of them aesthetically pleasing. The American South is notorious for old cars left in the yard. That could easily be my next project. Great shot. My guess would be mid 70's for that price. I' used ot work at a Supertest gas station in my teens, and have been looking for a pump to photograph but so far no luck. I enjoyed seeing both this and the pump. Unfortunately, I'm old enough that I didn't have to ask about the crank handle. I was pumping gas out o the ground with one of those when I was a teenager. Of course I had to check the oil and wash the windshield for every customer. That's how it was done back then. The angle has a lot to do with the curve of the road and getting back far enough with a 40 mm fov. Also, its a plain white building which looks nothing like an old store. However, I'll try next time. I ride many of these Virginia backroads. There are abandoned houses and collapsing barns, of course. But there is an amazing number of abandoned stores with gas pumps out front. The biggest problem is stopping to take the shot.
