i'd expect we'd have heard an outcry if any major DNG converter lost EXIF data

i do DNG in camera and it has all the same EXIF data; only downside (with k200d
at least) is it is not compressed so the files are bigger

That's what you say!

I went with the DNG conversion route with the *ist-D (no internal DNG
option) and the with the K10d, which did not compress the DNG files, so
there was an advantage to shooting PEF and converting. After that I
never thought about shooting DNG again with either the K7 or the K5. So
- I'll give it a try and see if the in camera DNG's work as well as the
converted ones.

Thanks - you probably just saved me a ton of time!

If you reach any conclusion, I'd appreciate if you shared it with us. I
am curious too.

I have the latest version of Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 loaded on
my laptop, which is as powerful as my desktop, (which is at this point
over 5 years old, making it ancient in computer term). It works fine,
especially if you plan to do most of your editing on your desktop and
only occasional work on your laptop.

I think IrfanView actually displays the embedded Jpeg in PEF files
rather than decoding the raw data for display. At least that's the way
it seems to work.

I use a Netbook - a Thinkpad X100e, which is very good for slouching around
wasting my life on the PDML. It has W7 Professional. I can't remember all
the other acronyms and numbers.

I'm contemplating getting an iPad though because it seems better designed
for couch spuds.

I have a bigger PC, a Dell Vostro with W7 64 Pro, for Lightroom. It has lots
of big numbers and impenetrable acronyms, so it must be very good. At the
time I bought it it was comparable (by which I mean same spec and same
parts) as the top end Mac, but over £1,000- cheaper.

I don't know of anything comparable with LR that runs on PCs.

You can download Lightroom, and most other apps for that matter. I also have
an accessory DVD drive for the Thinkpad - they're very cheap.

Fastone Image Viewer is what I use to view and do (very light,
preliminary) editing of PEF files on underpowered hardware. It's nice
and quick, and it's free:

http://www.faststone.org/

If you need to install Lightroom without an optical drive, just
download it from Adobe:

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_lightroom&promoid&promoid=DTEML
or
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom4-1/

Once it's installed, just enter your license key and it's not a
"trial" version anymore.
