Thanks Alan! I’ll join in on the praise of Filip’s very nice “action” shot!
Nicely seen and composed. I also liked the curious seals in the north and the
“getting to know you” sea lions in the south. I’ve been on that beach on
Kangaroo a couple of times Brian, and all I remember seeing were critters
sleeping. If I get another opportunity, I’ll look more closely for this sort of
interaction.

A small note for John Coyle - I think that’s Knaresborough, North Yorkshire,

Re: September PUG is up - Again....

I looked it up in the Oxford English Dictionary (the one that comes with a
magnifying glass and is still massive).

The first definition of a jetty is a stone structure that marks or protects the
entrance to a harbor. Another is a stone structure projecting from a wharf.

The last definition boils down to “a pier.”

Happy to share our OED with anyone who stops by!

According to Wikipedia:

"A jetty is a structure that projects from land out into water. A jetty

So, a pier COULD BE a jetty, but it doesn't have to be.

Plus this is PDML, so I don't really expect strict adherence to matters
of proper form. It don't even have to be close enough for government

Pier is my favorite image of the month.  Strong perspective, nice
patterns

and textures, and a definite mood.  I also really like Misty, by Patrick
Nelson;  a fine, moody, minimalist image.  I think the long light pole,
jutting out from the main object of attention, really makes this shot
special.

I didn't see (either) Paul ask about a pier vs a jetty  but I had been
bothered by that as well..
which is partly why I gave up trying to find a Pentax taken shot for
this month.. and
the one shot I had (that would have been a repeat PUG submission ) was
only a pier... ;-)

I had nothing suitable for the Sept. PUG except, perhaps, this one -
taken in 2012 before I had acquired a Pentax digital body. I was using
my old Pentax lenses with Big-Is EMF adapters on a Canon 1000D body.
Worked very well, but all manual. This one is at full stretch with the
FA100-300.

Re: September PUG is up

2022-09-06 Thread ann sanfedele

this worked = thanks to Ralf

http://pug.komkon.org/22sep/index.html

You won't see any by me - only ones that I took with a Pentax that
qualified by subject matter
were in fairly recent PUGS ..or would have required going back into
negatives or chromes from the 70's
All the others I have were taken with darkside tiny cameras - at
leastany I could find.
From the size of the image population I gather it was a difficult
subject for quite a few but for different reasons.

My favorites are Bob W's pier, Paul Sorenson's pier and Patricks "Misty"
- which is almost a BW.. I love

foggy photos and the painterly look.

ann - waiting to see what Ralf did :-)

Re: September PUG is up

2021-09-05 Thread ann sanfedele
Fun gallery!  I though I surely had a real mailbox somehwere in my files
to contribute but either they were awful photos or not Pentax..
Keep coming back to bruce's "open wide" not so cute, a more serious
photo that says a lot.

Dan, actually, the boat was an important part of the photo to me when I
took it.. I'm pretty sure I used a tele lens to bring the text on the
wagon closer to the boat - yes, you saw it before - I put it on FB on
aug 26 for throw back thursday because I took the photo on
aug 26th in 1989.  I don't like bright whites either.. on my screen it
doesn't come up bright..

story behind photo.. we drove the white pass back and forth to skagway
at two different times on that trip.  The second go around

the "P" had been restored to it's original whiteness. Spoil sports.

My cofavorites are "On the Reservation," by Joseph Tainter and "Deere on

Joseph's image of the great American west is stunning in its simplicity and
composition, with eye-catching clouds and the mystery of the road seemingly
going nowhere. The lonely mailbox, securely padlocked, gives a feeling of
strength and solitude, and certainly fits the theme to a T.

Don's image is a great find, full of humor and color, and fitting the theme
as well as anything could. The road going off to nowhere (once again) adds
mystery and frames the image well.

I also love Ann's "Slow Delivery," which I believe I have seen before. The
boat adds to the ambiance, but its location and relative brightness
detracts from the main subject of the image, to my eye, at least.

Lastly, Filip Nicolaï's "Curiosity?" is a delightful image full of color
and humor and good composition.

Overall, a small but fine gallery.

Dan, I had a bunch of fish-eye shots of different animals, - those remind

Thanks Dan,
I took that in 1980 and it is on my 48state calendar --put it up because
I couldn't find the one I wanted to use.. such a lazy girl.
Yeah, the shot taken from a poverty stricken area of he city against the
relative opulence of the capitol building was my idea.

the way they are outlined against the blue sky on one side and the white
wall on the other; good contrast. Again, the capitol building adds
interesting context.

THe whole gallery is really nice, but I do have faves - NIcolai's stormy
sky and Ralf's Calais move me most, but Rick's is my wish I were there
photo...
and I love the comment it makes about the relationship betwen the fence
and the tree that is growing around it and the other that was cut down...

makes one wonder about the sequence of events.

That’s a great group of shots! I especially like Ralf’s and it was great to
end with the fish eye of the camel poking his nose through the fence! Nicely

Another excellent gallery!

My faves are Brian’s (for the geometry, colors, and lighting), David’s
(texture, colors, lighting are lovely), Annsans (sharing Dan’s reasons), and
Joe’s (very nice pic, and great caption). Igor’s is the perfect last image.

Re: September PUG is up

2020-09-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
It is a smaller gallery, but I find it satisfying.

My favorite is Brian's "Pickets and Shadows." Wonderful geometry and nice
handling of the shadows. I think the distance street with its homes and
traffics adds something as well -- context, I guess.

I also like Ann's "Providence, Rhode Island." Great eye to identify the
spade-shaped tops of the fence as an interesting focus. I especially like
the way they are outlined against the blue sky on one side and the white
wall on the other; good contrast. Again, the capitol building adds
interesting context.

Igor's "Through the Iron Curtain" is a lovely image filled with humor,
including the title. The fisheye works quite well here.

All of the other images have merit as well. but these are the ones that
stand out to my eye.

This doesn't have much to add to location, but it seems to be the
appropriate place to compared to anywhere else to add this comment.

The range of equipment is quite varied, but there seems to be a
preponderance of K-5 variants, seven in fact, with the K-1 following
with three,  two *ist-D cameras, and then one each of everything else used.

I agree it is a really lovely gallery... my personal fave is Brian's
"Eruption"  reminds me of a Winslow Homer painting..

Dan,  taken in Ft Walton Beach. My nephew was a retired Air force major
and he and his wife  lived there for many years.. I visited in November
of 2001 for
Thanksgiving.   We took a stroll pretty close to their home at dusk.  I
stopped their on my return road trip route from the west - which had
been planned before that awful day in Sept but extended because of it.

BTW your submission certainly falls into the category in my mind since
it is clear it is the ocean and the sea to beach ratio is good ;-)

The last time I had been to the gulf coast previous to that trip was in
April of 1945.   (Not counting one short visit to New Orleans for the
2004 National Scrabble Championship)

Well, it was hard to come up with something that fit one of the titles,
and the gallery is quite small, but I reckon it got some rather nice
photos in the end. I particularly like the one by Marco.

I also tried to write a nonsense description without any aids, myself,

In the end, we had a bigger gallery than I expected. As usual, you'll

+

Next up is one that can't be put off until the last minute.
"Synchronicity' requires taking a photo on the date of the September
Equinox, which is rapidly approaching.

The actual time of the equinox will be on 22 or 23 September,
depending on your locality. You can find the actual time for your
locality here:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?continent=namerica&iso=20140923T0229&msg=September%20Equinox%202014

http://tinyurl.com/pmmh9qp

The photo should be taken during a 24 hour period - 12 hours either
side of the actual time of the equinox.

The subject of the submitted images can be whatever you like but
images taken around the areas where you all live might make the
gallery a bit more interesting - but that's only a suggestion.

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:
* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body
or lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line.

* Nominal closing date: 30 September.

Well it is a nice gallery!
I just looked at the photos... even as parody that gobbly-gook prose was
too much to bear or bare, for that matter. Anyway, the type was too small.

As to October's gallery and dragging our feet - while it is true we
can't in terms of shooting something for it, we can still dally while

deciding which photo to use :-)

It's here: http://pug.komkon.org/ On the 1st! (At least for some of
the world.) Thanks to Rick Womer for prodding me. Without his gentle
reminders I'd still be 3 months behind.

The entire gallery this month is digital. No film. I think this is
only the second time that has occurred. There are probably more
two-wheeled contraptions in this gallery than in all the prior
galleries combined. You'll see why. Pete McIntosh's is my favorite.

There are currently no submissions for October or November.

I like Pete's too - the just slightly off centre composition works
really well.

Other favs:
The Old Motorcycle by George K. Vlachou
Gear change by Patrick Temmerman
Night Truck by Rick Womer

And I got a laugh out of Ann's 'Not So Busy'

But, overall 'Granddaughter and grandfather' by Carl Gjersem is my pick.
 Wonderful composition.

Cheers

G'night Johnboy!

Great gallery from Walton's Mountain this month. The stand-out shots for me
are by Carl Gjersem, Dag, annsan and Pete McIntosh.

The 'recognised who did it without even looking' award goes to Frank!

Here's my non-Pentax contribution, taken in Liskeard, Cornwall last month
(my bike):

The interesting question arising from the one by Pete is 'how does one turn
right or left?'. Today I found myself in one of those horrible separated
cycle lanes in London and it was practically impossible to do the right turn
(left to most people!) I wanted.

The gallery is very timely - I cycled to & from work today for the first
time in my new job. I haven't bike-commuted into the centre of London since
1998. It's amazing how it's changed. Back then there were relatively few
people doing it; today it was incredible, like joining a swarm. There are
some very competitive people out there, and the pace is incredible. Very
enjoyable though, and 50% faster (including shower) than the fastest public
transport I've tried. And over £2,000 per year cheaper.

I'm also surprised at how many K10D's were used.

I knew it was Frank's pic the moment it came up; no need to look at

Not sure I have a fave; they all rock in their own way(s).

Sorry for the delay, Luiz. I looked back in my Bridge db and discovered
that I hadn't properly noted the car make, sorry! It was taken at a
Classic Car Cruise, so it's vintage -- older than 20 years at least.

That "sign" would actually be a large overhead light stand. This Cruise
takes place in the parking lot of a Harvey's Hamburger restaurant, in
keeping with the days in the 1960's when these cars would gather at the
original Harvey's at Jane & #401 highway before heading north out of
Toronto for illegal midnight street racing. Some of the cars even sport
original Harvey's advertising decals in their windows.

Glad you liked the shot!

Excellent showing again this month. I should comment more often, but
since I put a shot in this month, I figure I should fully participate.
Take these with a grain of salt, I'm not really one to comment, you
all make me look very amateurish.

8 by Igor Roshchin - I like this, but I agree with Luiz Felipe earlier
who mentioned cropping the buildings off the top

Rent Me Now! by Brian Walters - Great colors

Mercury capsule and Space Shuttle Enterprise by Matthew Hunt - I like
the DOF and composition

Corvette at Gawsworth by Chris Stoddart - Colors that p-o-p!

R22 by Bong Manayon - nice, love the sun coming down from above

Floatplanes by Ambal - good composition and you spice up what looks
like a dreary day

Intersections by Bruce M. Walker - a shot I probably couldn't get,
will keep trying

Offenhauser Flathead by Ted Beilby - nice details, I like the portrait crop

Train. Bus. Bike. by Toralf - looks a little soft to me but I like the movement

23 1/2 Hour Towing by Rick Womer - I like the concept, but think the
red car takes a little bit away from the shot as a whole

Re: September PUG is up

2009-09-03 Thread Igor Roshchin

Thanks everybody for your kind words.

Luiz,
I was playing with various crops, and this was the most ghm.. powerful,
I guess. At least so I thought at the time of playing with it.
There are a few reasons for that:
"8" is naturally inscribed in a elongated (non-square) rectangle.
Another point is that I wanted to keep the bottom "spiraling out"
part, while having the center of the "8" in the middle. That's why
I didn't remove the buildings at the top.

It was taken from a large commercial jet (MD-80 or Boeing 737)
on the approach for landing at DFW airport.
Whenever I am flying I usually try to get a window seat in the front
of the economy class, so that the view down is not obstructed by
the wings. Also, for some cities I have a favorite side.
E.g. flying to/from San Diego, - I take the left side
(great view of downtown at the extent of your hand distance for normal
landing, and nice overview of the bay and the down town on take off
if flying East). Flying to JFK - left side, flying from JFK - right
side. Flying to Chicago (ORD), - coming from West Coast, - right side -
depending on the landing route (which varies), - sometimes you get nice
views of the downtown, (albeit from a distance, but still a nice view).
I don't remember for sure about flying to Boston, - I think I had better
views on the left side. Flying from Boston, - right side - nice
view of downtown.

Does anybody else has any similar preferences/hints for other cities
anywhere around the world?
(I'll be flying to Turin, Italy with a connection in Paris, CDG in about
a week - any recommendations?)
