i have the DA 15/4 ltd; it's a nice lens with moderate distortion; there are
lens corrections you can apply to eliminate most lens distortion; more
prominent than distortion is some softness of the edges; that doesn't matter
at all with some subjects, but it's noticeable on landscapes

i have a DA 16-45/4 too, but haven't used it in a couple of years; i only use
the 15 a few times a month, though; one of the cool things about the 15 is
you can point it at the sun or a street light at night and get very minimal
 flare

you should be able to look at a lot of images taken by either lens via a
search on Flickr, or on pentaxforums.com

There is also a grey market Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 that would provide
more speed and zoom versatility. It is a well-regarded lens:

Re: Short zooms vs. short primes

2015-05-16 Thread Stan Halpin
The DA21/3.2 is a favorite lens; like Christine I often find it is THE lens on
my camera when walking city streets. I like the DA15/4 as well and pretty much
always include it in my travel kit. Small, light, I can find a place to put it.
But I don’t pull it out and use it all that often.

Wide angle shooting really is different. For me the hardest part is trying to
limit the image to one primary subject - with wide angle there is often just
too much going on. So I tend to gravitate toward “normal” and “short tele”
range lenses most of the time. When I realize that the scene is begging for a
wide angle and I take the time to pull out and attach the 15/4, it is just cool.

Thanks, Stan. I appreciate the comments about wide angle shooting. Very often
the scene itself is the subject for me, which is why I find myself wanting a
wider field of view. And as Christine says, if by chance something in the scene

Thinking about zooms, though, has got me thinking about primes as an
alternative. I love my a 28/2.8 but I want a wider field of view. I’m tempted
by the pentax 15/4 limited and smc 21/3.2 limited. I’d like to avoid
noticeable distortion, i.e., noticeable to people without your expertise,
which includes me. Would the 15 be OK in that regard?

Opinions about these lenses or suggestions for others, preferably autofocus,
 would be appreciated.

 Thanks,

I’m a huge fan of the DA 21mm f3.2! Can’t say enough about the lens. When I
travel, it’s often my go-to lens, especially when in urban areas for street

 :-)!

Thanks, Christine. I think I remember you raving about the 21/3.2 once before
when it was the topic here.

Re: Short zooms vs. short primes

2015-05-16 Thread Darren Addy
Eric,
I don't have either one, but here are examples taken with the 21mm HD:
http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/photos/gallery/query?camera=lens=4092
and the SMC 21mm:
http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/photos/gallery/query?camera=lens=80

And here are the 15mm versions.
HD: http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/photos/gallery/query?camera=lens=4093
SMC: http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/photos/gallery/query?camera=lens=3780

Comparing the 21mm to the 15mm images should give you some idea of the
distortion and FOV differences.

There is also a grey market Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 that would provide
more speed and zoom versatility. It is a well-regarded lens:

More reviews for that lens and a non-grey-market price:

Well, that’s my recollection—my vague recollection. And you know how reliable

i have the DA 15/4 ltd; it's a nice lens with moderate distortion; there are
lens corrections you can apply to eliminate most lens distortion; more
prominent than distortion is some softness of the edges; that doesn't matter
at all with some subjects, but it's noticeable on landscapes

i have a DA 16-45/4 too, but haven't used it in a couple of years; i only
use the 15 a few times a month, though; one of the cool things about the 15
is you can point it at the sun or a street light at night and get very
minimal flare

you should be able to look at a lot of images taken by either lens via a
search on Flickr, or on pentaxforums.com
