Re: Time Management - Actual Photography vs Reading PDML Mail

Bipin, I solve this "issue" in a rather simple manner:

1. I have a very portable Ricoh GXR camera with me at all times during
the day. So I take pictures whenever I feel like it.

2. I prune my PDML inbox from my cell phone from wherever I am.

3. I don't read all PDML message but only those that I think are
interesting to me...

much time reading PDML mail in his Inbox, and less time on his actual

Perhaps we can ponder on this issue with ways to prune down the number
of "non-issue" mails that help only to fatten up the Inbox. The
British call it "cotton wooling".
I may have stirred the hornets nest, but I took a sincere and
calculated risk to highlight this issue to all of you.

Bob, i realise that's partly said tongue in cheek and while true, that's
not the whole story. true that 'modern' capitalist economy has only made
worse traditional imbalances (which were/ are quite bad). the number of
new shiny audis, bmws, porsches and mercs on the road (all of them have
factories here now except porsche i think) is practically obscene given
the large and visible number of people living under what the government
euphemistically describes as the 'poverty line'. as in modern
democracies elsewhere, the government seems to gift away vast swathes
of national resources rather cheaply to corporations to the benefit of
a few individuals directly and the short-term benefit of
the middle-classes indirectly. the number of kick-back scams in the last
two years alone has been unbelievable. all that is depressing no doubt.

but like i said that's not the whole story. dslrs, why even cameras,
were unaffordable once. my first ever camera was a digital p&s which i
bought at the age of 42 and i bought myself my first dslr four years
later (the *ist DS). it's not that bad now. there is a huge and
rising middle-class population with money to throw around (about 500
million at the last count; not too sure of the figures). nikon, canon
and sony are everywhere. but pentax can be got only through the grey
market and if anything goes wrong, you are on your own.

from what i can see, the k-x seems to have brought in more people to
the fold than any other new pentax dslr

Have a look at the way wealth is distributed in India and it may be easier

think of it as a river of information — you don't have to drink it all; it is
pretty easy from the subject lines and a little familiarity to know which
threads are going to drift away (and whether you'll be interested); looking at
the hierarchical structure also helps, but you need a true threaded email
client, which is a bit of an endangered species

the subject lines let me defer viewing many PESOs until i have more time, and
viewing threads hierarchically gives me a sense of the depth of a conversation,
which may tempt me or dissuade me from diving in; i usually at least look at a
PESO, but may or may not read most of the thread; waiting lets threads "fill
up", so it's easier to either take in the conversation with a bit of focus, or
skip it

Re: Time Management - Actual Photography vs Reading PDML Mail

2012-08-27 Thread Peter McIntosh
Time managerment is a personal thing: it's up to you to mange how much
time you spend on PDML (or anything else, for that matter). Stop
abrogating your responsibility for your own time and how you use it by
trying to blame another party.

Ciao,

Now, where did I spit that dummy?

I have a very enthusiastic photographer friend who wished to form
another Pentax Mail In Forum called iPentax. I wrote back telling him
that there is already a very interesting one called PDML.
He agreed, but said that he was once a member of PDML but spent too
much time reading PDML mail in his Inbox, and less time on his actual
photography. Many a time the number of mails on the same topic was
overwhelming, with little or no inputs to stimulate his grey cells and
his photography.
Perhaps we can ponder on this issue with ways to prune down the number
of "non-issue" mails that help only to fatten up the Inbox. The

Well, most of the off topic stuff is labelled "OT" so if you don't
want to see it, setting up an appropriate email filter would do the
trick.

Personally, I like the OT stuff.

since i have a feeling the OP might be referring to me (not that it
matters in the larger scheme of things :)) about two and a half years
back i started a googlegroup for pentax users in india (there are about
40 of us there now). mainly because pentax doesn't have an official
presence in india, it is difficult to get pentax gear here unless
one has relatives/friends abroad, so a forum like that, among other
things, is very helpful to circulate available second-hand stuff
around. we also, now and then, post photos and discuss other things.
it's a low-volume mailing list and it serves its purpose.

but i don't recall saying anything on the above line to the OP :) and i
am still very much here in PDML and enjoying the conversations to boot.
imagine PDML without OT or flame war epics :)

what *is* bothering me is, i can't for the life of me figure out why
this guy called steve cottrell is trying to convince us that he is
actually cotty...

2012-08-27 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
That's why we have subject lines. So we can filter out the crap.

That's why we never look at a gallery by Larry because we know it will feature
about 357 photos and take 42 minutes to scroll through.

And more seriously, the beauty of the email is that we can turn off our
computer, actually leave the house with a camera, take pictures for a whole day
or more and then when we come back everything on pdml will still be there; we
won't have missed a thing.

I don't understand how being active on pdml takes time away from photography
any more than any other activity would. Seems to me that it's about priorities
and choices and they have nothing to do with this list specifically.

Cheers,
frank
