when in the horizontal position. When I shoot verticals, I run into problems
with the camera shifting. The little plates that go with the 3262 and 3030
just don't hold tightly enough and the camera winds up rotating downwards
(especially when I have the 135 Macro with extension tubes). Okay, I know
the photo.net geeks all recommend the Arca Swiss head and Really Right Stuff
plate combo. Yes, it's is an awesome way to go but that's out of my price
range.
I'm considering the Bogen 3055 (heavy duty ball head) or 3275 (geared head).
Will these work okay when shooting verticals? Any other recomendations? I'm
open to other brands as long as it fits onto the Bogen 3401 (I hope I don't
have to upgrade that as well).

I finally received my new head this week. It's the Arca Swiss Monoball B1. It is
a fantastic ballhead and can be attached to any 5/8 tripod screw. I have it
installed on my Berlebach wooden tripod (http://www.berlebach.de) and am doing
to use it with my Pentaxes as well as my wooden Wista 4x5 field camera. It does
accept incredibly heavy loads while still being pretty lightweight and beautiful :-)
It has this incredible ball friction control which can be set and then the camera
can be freely moved but it holds spot on without slipping after you take your hands
off
(camera can be in any position)! It has an aspherical ball so the friction increases
aspherically when the camera is tilted.

Arca Swiss does not have a homepage (which anyone could connect to) but you'll
find pictures of the head in BH home and other places in the net. Best place
for me to purchase it was http://www.robertwhite.co.uk, at least they seemed to be
the most cost effective and they have a fantastic service ! The only bad thing
about this head is the price... but it really seems to be the best ball head money
can buy.

Highly recommended!

A pity indeed because this combo works really well.

I'm considering the Bogen 3055 (heavy duty ball head) or 3275 (geared

Forget the 3055 because it won't even hold 135 format properly. It might be
huge in size, but small on performance.

Hi Mark ...

As you may recall, I have the 3275 geared head and love it. Of
course, that doesn't answer your question g. As I recall, doing
verticals is a piece of cake with this head, and it'll certainly
support the 67. Many use it with 4x5 cameras.

Mark;

I use a Bogen 3055 for my 35mm for nature/wildlife photography. My longest
lens is a 300mm with a 2x multiplier. I've had to add a metal plate to part
of the quick release plate that catches the base of the camera to prevent it
from rotating when I shoot verticals. Even then the 3055 is just not heavy
duty enough and slips. I'm saving up for a huge studioball with arca-type
quick release. I would suggest you save for something a bit better than the
3055.

Hey Shel,

I remember the 3275 from when you brought it over and I was impressed with
it. That's one of the reasons I'm considering it as an option. My concern is
that when I go to vertical, I will experience the same kind of slippage on
the plate. The combination of the body, 135/4 Macro, and extension tubes
comes to 13.5. The mount for the body is 2 in. That leaves 11.5 of
overhang from the point of the mount. So when I got to vertical, I get a
slight rotation. I need a better way to manage those kind of dimensions. So
either the plate has to be capable of holding it in place, or maybe I need
some sort of telephoto support bracket such as the Bogen 3420.

 Hey Folks,

I'm ready to upgrade my tripod head

I've been using the Manfrotto 029 (Bogen 3047) head with the 6x7
with no problems for at least 10 years. This head uses the
hexagonal quick release plate.
