Re: What to charge for family portraits?

2012-04-02 Thread Larry Colen
Things are still pretty chaotic around here, so I didn't really have
time to do much research. The site was about an hour's drive away, so
not counting time packing the van, it was about a 7 hour day.

Charles called me up, said that he expected it would be about $700, but
would be happy as long as it was under $1,000.

I expect that once they start looking into raw file conversion and such,
they'd probably be happy to have me do all the work, I think they just
want raw files as backup. As it turns out, I was pleasantly surprised
at how close to good to go all the files were.

And, honestly, I'd prefer to be able to shoot for friends for free, but
as I'm paying a big chunk of my mortgage with credit cards this month,
every little bit of money is desperately needed.

If the person who asked was a good friend, I would have done it for
free. For a casual acquaintance, providing files only, about $300. I
never give anyone RAW files, only tiffs or jpegs. The RAW data is
proprietary, IMO.

What would you have charged for the job?

RE: What to charge for family portraits?

2012-04-02 Thread Tanya Love
I would NEVER, EVER give raw, unprocessed files. Processing and editing to
me is as important as the initial capture in achieving the final product, if
not more so.

If I were to cover an event, it is $350 per hour, plus $950 for a disc of
high res images. (Weddings are different though). Or for a family portrait
session that is 2-3 hours, I charge $150 during the week, and $200 on the
weekend (add $150 to this if it is a styled shoot) and then they select and
purchase their images from a proofing gallery. It is $99 per high res
digital file, or $1150 for the complete disc. Print packages from $1200 for
10 x 7x10 matted prints in a museum quality folio case. Canvases from $500.

All prices in aud.

Just remember, if they screw up the processing of the raw files, it is
still your pictures, except now you are a crappy photographer because
the pictures don't look good.
The raw conversion and post processing isn't unprofitable, it is your
reputation as a photographer.

My friend's father (Marshal) turned 80 today. It was at the house of his
girlfriend. His sons, and their wives and kids were all there. The group
photos were mostly the various family sub units. One father was photographed
with all his daughters, then his daughter from a previous marriage, and then
his daughters from his current marriage. There were 20+ people there, of
which I knew 2. I was spending most of my time in the living room doing various
permutations of group and individual portraits, and was nearly completely
confused over the various family connections.

After we had done the group photos, my friends made sure that everyone who
wanted their own pictures had a chance to get some, at that point, various
people that I had barely seen during the course of the day wandered in for
photos.
