They're all done with 2 lights, except for perhaps the top one. It's
hard to tell about that one; but all the rest, just look down at the
feet, and you can see two shadows from main & fill.

Re: single light portraits

2008-10-24 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Scott,

It usually works better than zero light portraits . I have
only limited experience using one light - almost always use two. But
what I have found is the one light tends to create more dramatic
highlight/shadows. The second light is used most of the time to
bring up the shadows to make the picture not so strong.

So I would say it can be used ok - also if you have any means of
bouncing light - like a reflector or white wall then you can
compensate for not having the second light to some degree.

Wonder if he used Pentax paints. Probably not, the paintings would
have looked soft before post painting.

Thank you.

I often use a flash unit with a hot-shoe remote cord, flash held in my
hand, or fired via a slave (I use a little Nikon SB-30 that Adam Maas
recommended as a trigger flash, it works a treat for this kind of
thing). The SB-30 has an IR shield for the tube so that it doesn't add
to the exposure at all.

I tend to use mostly single light sources in portraiture, usually
combining a single light with something to diffuse it so that it is a
broad light source.

Here I used a convenient low, sloping ceiling and an index card to
direct the light from the L1's built-in flash, in bounce position:

I find single-light source portraiture simple and effective, as long
as you get the lighting set up correctly.
