As for the "shooting venues", - I would recommend three "sets": 1. Several places along the shore. and 2. "Safari"-park (formerly known as Wild Animal Park). 3. Balboa Park (near downtown). First about the Safari park: What I like about it is that most animals are not in cages as in case of a traditional zoo, but in an open space. And they have a safari tour, where they take you in the back of a small track into those areas. That tour is not cheap, but it's a great experience, IMHO. (I'd try to reserve that in advance, - look at the website for times and procedures.) One catch is that this park is at a distance from San Diego. I am not sure how much an uber ride will cost. Balboa Park has several different sites. I'd recommend the Botanical building (with a nice Lily Pond in front): http://www.balboapark.org/in-the-park/botanical-building they also have a nice Japanese Garden if you are into that. As an added bonus, there is a photography museum, - you can check what exibition is on display there now. The traditional Zoo is attached to Balboa park, - and it is also very enjoyable. Finally, the sea-side points that I personally enjoy: 1. La Jolla Coves 2. Similar sites: Shelter Island or Harbor Island (the latter is within walking distance from the airport) 3. Vicinities of the Cabrillo National Monument. 4. Coronado Island: both the side facing downtown and the ocean - near Hotel Del Coronado (That's where "Some like it hot" movie was shot). As a matter of fact, of these four, I'd suggest taking Coronado Ferry from the side of downtown (I believe it departs from two different places). Then enjoy "Coronado Ferry Landing" area, then take a quick Uber/taxi drive to Hotel Del Coronado, walk through it to the beach, walk along it in the NW direction, catch Uber to get to downtown (or elsewhere) via Coronado bridge -- that's a spectacular view, but you cannot stop there. Or, you can do in the reverse order. La Jolla Coves would be the second recommendation from these four. When there, also walk through La Jolla downtown, - they have some nice art galleries (if you like those). If you've been to all those before, and would rather enjoy a hike, you might consider Torrey Pines beach, and then a hike through the Torrey Pines reserve and hitting the Glideport. In a good weather, the Glideport is a nice place to be in the late afternoon. You might see people on gliders, with Kites. And it also gives a great sea view from the height of some 370 ft. Torrey Pines area is north of La Jolla, - so it all requires a ride. La Jolla downtown (5-10-minutes walk from La Jolla Cove) and a bunch of places @Coronado Landing have seafood (and other) restaurants. Most are touristy and a bit pricy, but not too bad, especially in La Jolla. My personal favorite seafood place (very casual) is Blue Water Seafood Market and Grill, which is relatively close to both downtown and airport: http://bluewaterseafoodsandiego.com/todays-menu/ They have both local and non-local fresh fish. It is good for both lunch and informal dinner. And they have local craft beers. If you care for tasty seafood and not that much for pampering and white-cloth ambience, - that's the place to hit. I've recommended this place to many people, and everybody enjoyed it. I hope this helps. It appears that I will be in San Diego this Friday without daytime obligations. If any PDMLers there would like to go shooting and perhaps ingest lunch and a beer, it would be a pleasure. In any case suggestions concerning shooting venues, lunch, and beer would be welcome. I won't have a car, but I will have Uber. I expect to be in the San Diego are from Saturday night until Tuesday morning. I don't know what my schedule is, as that depends on the availability of the relatives we will be visiting, but if anyone would like to meet up, email me or call or text my iPhone, 908-685-1090 Dan Dan Matyola http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/danieljmatyola -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
San Diego PDML?
I know that the notice is short, but… I'll be in San Diego later this week for a meeting, and have Wednesday afternoon open (air travel willing). It would be fun to meet another PDMLer for lunch and/or some walking and shooting. I'll be at the Westin Gaslamp. I'd also welcome some wandering/shooting suggestions. John, Yes, that's the gallery! I remember the last shot for the 600mm lens, white beard and the giraffe!!! It inspired us to take 4 or 5 of these trips over the years. This holiday season the spots were all filled and the canvas tops on the trucks made shade on the close-ups. But the kids, now 25-31 years old, giggled like teenagers. It was a fun trip. You must mean this gallery: http://www.panix.com/~johnf/gallery/sdwap.html I think they tailor the ride to the audience of the day. While I did find several places that used all of the 600mm lens, two of the shots in that gallery were taken by my wife using her little point-and-shoot. I would expect that the 60-250 would do fairly well on a 1.5x crop DSLR. I'm glad to see there are now several of the Indian rhinos. Bob, The Wild Animal Park is a 1,800 acre preserve for the San Diego Zoo. It's a 45 minute drive from the zoo, but well worth the effort - must see attractions! The zoo was the first in the US to use lots of space to show the animals in natural habitats. The Wild Animal Park started for breeding purposes, but is more now. Hope you can get over to see them some day. It's really fun to ride among the big animals, even just to take family snaps. :-) Regards, Bob S. Dave, I shot with the K7. Because of the canopy on the truck, I had to do some 'fill flash' in lightroom for the shady bits. Too much fill and the shade gets grainy. I didn't bring the K20 and grip, although that would have been useful. I can better hand hold the zoom with a grip. I'll probably get one for the K7. I posted the Picasa album for my family and especially my daughter-in-law. She's a special education teacher and some of her kids have never seen these animals. She's the woman with the lighter colored hair. You probably recognize my wife with the gray hair and my 2 boys and daughter have the dark hair. Regards, Bob S. Well, I live in Anaheim (Hills). I highly recommend: Gulliver's ...for great steaks, prime rib, English fare and a fantastic atmosphere. The theme of the restaurant follows the the book by Jonathan Swift. Call a few days ahead and ask for a table by the fire. 18482 Macarthur Blvd, Irvine, CA 92612 (949) 833-8411 for reservations. Dress is nice street wear, business casual, formal - whatever... I don't know where you'll be but... From the Convention Center - Across Katella Ave from Disneyland, take: Katella east to I-5, I-5 south to the 55 Fwy, 55 Fwy south to I-405, I-405 south to MacArthur Blvd. Exit MacArthur Blvd. toward John Wayne Airport. Turn left (generally south) on MacArthur Blvd. to Michelson Dr. Make a U-Turn (easy) and take next right on Business Center Drive. Make an immediate left into the El Torito parking lot and continue through to Gulliver's. ~$80 for two... For interisting spots to photograph, South on I-5 toward San Diego is San Juan Capistrano. Stop by this small community and visit the Mission. Hwy 74 - Ortega Hwy - goes north out of San Juan Capistrano through Casper's regional park and up over the mountain (twisty rural roadroad) toward Lake Elsinore. On the way, Stop at Hell's Kitchen for lunch and get your salid fixin's from the automatic coffin. You'll probably have to park across the street as most of the space is reserved for Harley's and choppers. If you can't find some interesting shots (people, bikes all) here, trade your camera in for some golf clubs. Continue on to a great view of Lake Elsinore from a few thousand feet up. Regards, Bob... Re: OT: Advice on Anaheim and San Diego, California
Dan, Let me add a few more places. Close to San Diego downtown: Seaport Village. Coronado Bridge. Coronado Island - an area facing downtown. I second - Shelter Island is great. I like La Jolla cove - as you can take pictures of sea birds (seagulls, sometimes pelicans) and seals (or sea lions? I always mix those). If it is not cloudy, I recommend going towards La Jolla - Taking either Torrey Pines Rd. South or La JOlla Pkwy - Ardath Rd and then taking Hidden Valley Rd. to Via Capri (La Jolla Scenic Dr. SOUTH) (it is not connected to L.J.S.V. North!) - and getting to the Mount Solidad (Natural Park). The view is great! For the exact path - check maps.google.com: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=qhl=enq=La+Jolla+Scenic+Dr+South,+San+Diegot=hll=32.843611,-117.247896spn=0.013953,0.042572 http://tinyurl.com/nv57z La Jolla has nice restaurants, but they are rather expensive, and many (if not most) of them aren't really worth it. Instead, I would suggest The Beach House in Cardiff by the Sea, for Sunday brunch: http://www.thebeachhouse.com/cardiff_by_the_sea.htm It has great ocean view from the patio if the whether is good. Pizza Port in Solana Beach has great pizza and bear but can be crouded on the weekends: http://www.pizzaport.com/history.html I went only to the location in Solana Beach. For great desserts and teas (especially in the evening): http://www.extraordinarydesserts.com/extraordinarydesserts/ We go to their main old location 2929 Fifth Ave. It is close to downtown. I recommend stopping at this strawberry farm. It's great, and is right of I-5 in Carlsbad (Cannon Rd. exit). You can buy best in California fresh strawberries (assuming that there will be 2-3 sunny days just before) right in the middle of this image: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=qhl=enq=Carlsbad,+Californiall=33.135799,-117.326871spn=0.003477,0.010643t=h http://tinyurl.com/pvy7k In order to get there you'd need to take Cannon Rd. Exit East, go past the traffic light at the intersection with Paseo Del Norte, Make a U-turn at the intersection with Car County Dr., and then first turn to the right (just before the traffic light) - will be the entrance to the strawberry farm. Here is an example: http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/strawb-IMG_0545sm.jpg I hope this helps. Shelter Island has some good views of the downtown across the harbor and part of Coronado Island. Lots of boats too! The cruise ships negotiate the channel in the early AM and PM, sometimes carriers too. Humphry's has a Jazz Brunch on Sundays. LaJolla cove with bird rock is photogenic, but better for your wife's shopping. South of there, Pacific Beach is interesting and Torre Pines State Park north of LaJolla is better yet for photographic opportunities. We enjoyed touring the aircraft carrier Midway, now a Museum in downtown San Diego. May bring back some old memories for you. We like the Fish Market restaurant a few doors south of there. We also ate in Seaport Village. Both areas offer an overlook of the harbor and carriers. We also ate at Dakotas on the north end of the Gaslight district. I love the lighthouse and view from the end of Point Loma. That is my favorite spot. Regards, Bob S.

Re: OT: Advice on Anaheim and San Diego, California
I forgot to mention a few important places: San Diego: Balboa Park has many interesting view. Rose garden (I am not sure if they are blooming yet), Tropical garden (or something like that), other interesting things (check the list on-line). Zoo is attached to the Park. On your way from Anaheim to San Diego - on I-5, there are a few vista points - right off the highway - they are marked as such. You might want to use them. Also, - you might want to consider taking the coastal highway - at least some portions of it. One of the possibilities: From Anaheim, - take I-5 South, and then take Hwy-55 south (to Newport Beach) - then proceed along the coastal Hwy down to Dana Point - when you can get back on I-5. This stretch would take you about 1 hour of driving, but you would want to stop at a few places and enjoy the views. Hotel del Coronado that Godfrey and David mentioned - is indeed nice, and there is a beautiful beach next to it. It is in top-10 beaches in the US (at least continental part). The peak that David mentioned is the Mt. Soledad that I described in my previous e-mail. Personally, I wouldn't go to Tijuana, - especially if you have limited time. In my opinion - it would take a lot of time, but is not that interesting (although, somewhat exotic in the sense of Mexican culture, poverty etc.) Really beautiful parts of Baja-California are south of Tijuana. 40 minutes from Anaheim to Hollywood is true only without traffic. I-5 in downtown is almost always congested. So, depending on the day and time of the day, it can take up to 1-1.5 hours. Igor

Re: Advice on Anaheim and San Diego, California
Dan, the San Diego Zoo offers a Safari experience at an off site facility, somewhat north of the city and conventional zoo. I had a great experience there last year, They transport you on the back of a modified flat bed truck, stopping often to cater to the photogs aboard. I don't normally enjoy captive animal experiences but this was well worth it. You might need a reservation, especially on weekends. For me a place called Corvettes, in the city, is a must experience (being a car guy). Kenneth Waller - Original Message - From: Daniel J. Re: OT: Advice on Anaheim and San Diego, California
Dan, At the Wild Animal Park, we rode on a 'Photo Safari', a 5 ton truck thru the animal enclosures. It has turned into a 'feed the giraffes and hippos' outing, but is still interesting to see even the 3rd time around. PDMLers in San Diego?
Hi All! I asked this question here about 4 years ago, and at that point nobody confessed. :-) Seeing a recent PESO on San Diego, I decided to ask again, just in case somebody moved to San Diego or joing the list recently: Is there anybody on this list who lives in San Diego (or vicinity)? I did join the list recently and have gotten a lot of help and a chance to share my work. I'm also in deviant art, but there aren't very many pentax users there. FYI, The family I'm staying with are huge fans of the Padres and Chargers. Hope more people join PDML from San Diego, its a great city.

Hello John, You got some very good shots. Oh, a DeLorean:) Reminds me of 'Back to the Future':) The AMX/3 is a rarity. AFAIK only 5 of these were built. It's speed is limited due to the lack of a front spoiler, the car is lifting at higher speeds. Absoulutely fantastic construction for 1969, I can't figure why AMC dropped the project. Yes, I know I should have included captioning. I really wish I had the full documentation for the Hunt Special, which can be seen in images 3 and 4. Seems it was built for a wealthy rancher who absolutely *had* to have reliable transportation over the rutted Baja California cart paths to get sixty miles to town to see his doctor. It was a matter of life or death for him to see his doctor regularly, so he commissioned this original Baja off-roader, which successfully traversed the roads in the area now used for serious Baja off-road racing. It was the epitome of excellence in small-shop design, engineering, machining, and assembly. Everything was manufactured at the Hunt's own machine shop except for the crankshaft, which was farmed out because the shop was very busy with other work at the time. I think it was built in only a year. It was a convertible like some of today's exotic SUVs - the back passenger end was removable, and when it was taken off the car became a flatbed truck suitable for hauling cargo. The forward engine compartment does not contain the engine - there's nothing but empty storage space in the hood area behind the radiator. The engine is under the front seat, utilizing horizontally opposed cylinders. The suspension has huge amounts of clearance and travel, and has a nifty built in safety arms which allow the car to continue even if it breaks a leaf spring. I tried a Google search for more info about this car, but came up empty. -- John Mustarde www.photolin.com
RE: *istD and M20/4 at San Diego Automotive Museum
John, The museum looks better than I remember it. The car shots are great and show off the ability of the M20/4 to get the shot in tight spaces. You really seem kind of partial to that red Cord. g If you were down in the gas light quarter, there is a classic car dealer right on the corner. (about 5th and E street) It's a great place to spend a half hour trying to figure out if you can afford that old classic and how would you get it home. San Diego is a wonderful place! Regards, Bob S.
