Re: JIS Crosspoint Screwdriver
I think for tiny size like 1.4mm is pretty much interchangeable. I used to have a Wiha small philips which fits well for 1.4mm cross point screws. For bigger size or tight screws (lens mount screws etc), the fit is important. Alan Chan http://www.pbase.com/wlachan I don't know how accurate that information is, all I know is that my Sony/HIOS driver fits like a glove and I'd never stripped a head (though I've broken shanks).
Re: JIS Crosspoint Screwdriver
Actually that is because threadlock was applied to them in the factory. The screws themselves are rather short surprisingly (2.5mm only, even for FA*300/4.5), and 3mm for some heavy lenses. Alan Chan http://www.pbase.com/wlachan Depending on the location of the screw, one can often pop it loose by putting a screwdriver into the head and gently tapping the back of the screw. Obviously, care must be taken with this, but I have found that lens mount screws, especially, are generally rather tight, and have lots of support behind them.

Re: JIS Crosspoint Screwdriver
Aren't all Japanese made products based on their own JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards)? Well, at least the NIWA JIS blades work fine for Pentax products so far, and Pentax Canada is using the same fitting blades as well (but provided by Pentax Japan directly). Alan Chan http://www.pbase.com/wlachan Welcome, Powell. It's considerably more complicated than that, I'm afraid. I know of five commonly used crosspoint systems: Philips, JIS, Vessel, PK and Pozidrive. There are undoubtedly others. All have varying forms for the head and driver shape. Often you can get by with using a tool from one system on the head of another. Sometimes this just will not work. If a screw will not turn, the first thing to check is that you have a properly fitting tool. Stop sniggering at the back! This does not mean that it just goes in but that it fits with minimal gap. Often you can only do this by trying several and comparing. I won't tell you again! Only then can you evaluate which one is best.

JIS Crosspoint Screwdriver
Rob Studdert indicated I should be using a Crosspoint screwdriver to get the screws out of my defective lens. After asking for an explanation of the difference between JIS Crosspoint and Phillips I did an extensive net search and finally found the following information at http://www.pierfishing.com/tackle_tips/9911.html The Cross-Point Screwdriver Most currently manufactured reels use crosspoint screws. While they may look like what most people and screwdriver manufacturers like to call Phillips screws, they are different. The crosspoint screws are 58 degrees and have a blunt point, while the Phillips screws have an angle of 55 degrees and are more pointed at the tip. Most screws now used, either for reels or in your home are cross-point screws. A Phillips screwdriver does not properly fit a crosspoint screw. Most American made screwdrivers sold to fit these screws are designed for Phillips screws. (Go Figure) Using an unmodified Phillips screwdriver, the ones commonly found at your local hardware store, will cause you to have difficulty because the screwdriver taper is longer than the taper of the screw. You must use a bigger Phillips screwdriver to fit the crosspoint screw. The improper size of Phillips screwdriver will cause the points of the blade to override the grooves on the screw and ruin the head. Since you cannot conveniently buy a crosspoint screwdriver, one modification that can be made to a Phillips screwdriver is to grind off the tip of the blade thereby shortening the taper.
