I think that the requirement on the Ilford packaging is for printer
settings -- the current Epsons can be set to print faster and use less
ink by printing at 720dpi or 360dpi instead of 1440dpi. The tradeoffs
are blending and overall print quality.

Yep, I was just trying to figure out what it was selling for at the
retail level. I've set a price, but I don't want to be overly expensive
or overly cheap, y'know? :)

Unless those guys tried Ilford's materials in the last few weeks, it's
very doubtful that they tried the new stuff. It really ~is~ new. In
fact, in Canada we haven't seen the glossy material yet, other than
sales samples.

I'm using Photoshop 5.5. (Hope 6.0 is close otherwise this information won't
help much...)

First of all, I find everything much easier if I select "Pixels" for my units of
measurement. (FILE -> PREFERENCES)

>From the IMAGE menu, select IMAGE SIZE.
In the dialog box that pops up there's a top section (Pixel Dimensions) with
boxes for Height and Width (in pixels if that's what you set as I noted above,
otherwise you can select pixels for units).

The middle section of the dialog box (Print Size) has print height and width
(this is where you're concerned with size in inches) and resolution (in pixels
per inch). This resolution box is where you set output resolution.

The lowest section of the dialog box has 2 check boxes: "Constrain Proportions"
and "Resample Image" with a choice of options next to the "Resample Image" box.

To change print size WITHOUT altering your file size, you mush have the
"Resample Image" box UNCHECKED. When you change the number in the RESOLUTION
box, the physical size of your output (print) will change, but the size of the
image in pixels (and megabytes) won't.

If the "Resample Image" box IS checked, changing the RESOLUTION number will keep
the *print* size the same while altering the pixel dimensions of your file (and
subsequently changing the file size as well). This box hould be checked if
you're resizing the height and width in pixels (for web use, for example).

It is listed in the same dialog where you specify the new print size.

It's a pity that they screwed up the first time. The guys at the store

I have been using an 870 for about a year and ,depending on different
factors, set my output to 240 to 360 ppi in Photoshop and 720 or 1440 for
the printer driver. One of the biggest factors is the paper used as some
require more or less ink than others.

I have been doing my 8x10s at 360dpi on the new Epson. This is
working out to about a 29MB filesize.

DPI (dots per inch) refers to the resolution of your *printer*. You can't change
it because it's fixed in the hardware. They're saying that you shouldn't use a
printer with less than 720 dpi resolution.

Your digital file *Output Resolution* is measured in PPI (pixels per inch). This
is the value that you *can* set in Photoshop or whatever software you're using.
If you're getting an 8 x 10 from a 15 megabyte file then you're outputting at
less than 300 ppi.

A 15 megabyte TIFF, output at 300 ppi, will yield a 6 x 9 (approx) print.
At 720 ppi it will yield a 2.5 x 4 (approx) print.

I'm using an 870, the 1270's little brother. I'm trying to figure out
how people are getting bad results. How did it suck? I have a feeling that
people are following the "conventional wisdom" and outputting only 300dpi or
so. Ilford states that their papers needs "start at 720 dpi". I haven't put
anything less than a 15 meg file to the printer, and those are for 8x10s! I
haven't worked out the dpi yet, but I'm sure that I'm well above the 300 and
even the 720 that has been recommended...
