The bikes a bit on the heavy side, and the gearing’s a little tall for
serious offroad, but it’s reasonably comy on pretty much any road.

I’ve never seen a fox in these parts. I’ve seen a couple of bobcats. I may
have seen a couple of coyotes by the road at night. I personally have never
seen a mountain lion, but sightings are becoming quite a bit more common,
especially with all of the security cameras that people are getting.

We USED to have wild turkeys in our yard. The occasional fox has turned
into three foxes, running around, and, no more turkeys. Also, fewer
rabbits and squirrels. I haven't seen a possum or groundhog in a couple of
years either, as I think of it, and the chipmunks seem to be confined to
our fenced-in pool patio, whereas previously they were digging at the
foundation at the front of the house.

Re: PESO - 'A Wild Turkey'

2017-04-28 Thread P. J. Alling
It's mating season and the toms are particularly stupid because of it.
A few years ago a big tom decided to challenge my car when I was driving
to work, I lived on a small side road and his wingspan seemed to cover
most of it's entire width. I could probably have just pushed him out of
the way, but really all he wanted was to get a little action and who
could fault him for that.

Re: PESO - 'A Wild Turkey'

2017-04-28 Thread P. J. Alling
They were reintroduced into Connecticut, IIRC about 20 years ago and
they're now more common than a lot of species that never disappeared,
it's kind of weird watching them troop across suburban yards.

They especially seem to love suburban areas with fairly high human
population densities but still a lot of woods.

The two "acre", (builders, which isn't actually as big as a "real"
acre), lot left mostly wooded with a cleared area for a house on it,
makes for good turkey habitat, which also makes for good deer habitat,
(there's also been an explosion in the deer population here in the last
15 years).

There's no generally no hunting, and most natural predators are scarce,
domestic cats and even fairly large dogs are pretty wary of poults when
protected by a big hen.

So wild turkeys like where people live even if they don't actually like
people.

Anybody on PDML from Turkey or Germany?

2014-04-04 Thread Igor Roshchin

I was wondering if any of PDMLers are from
a) Dresden, Germany or
b) Istambul or Antalya, Turkey.

I am planning to be in those places in late April-early May,
and would be glad to meet with people from there.
So, if you are in one of those places, please contact me off the list.

I don't remember that anybody active now is from there, but I might be
forgetting (or misplacing) somebody, or there might be some lurkers
who aren't writing to the list.

Cheers,

Igor

Re: A different kind of "Turkey" (Wrap up)

2013-10-08 Thread Alan C

Thanks to those who looked & commented.

Yes, most tourists are not that knowledgeable. At least they noticed them!
Many tourists drive too fast & don't see as much as they could.

When the local film lab closed down in 2011, I decided to go digital. At
first I tried a C***n body with my Pentax lenses using adapters but then
picked up a bargain K110D body which proved to be a better option. Now that
I have the K7, I will have a big clean out. When you have all upgraded to
K3's, perhaps there will be some bargain k5's?

You know it's a capable camera but I didn't think anyone had actually
bought a K110D.

The tourists you get must be blind. Those don't look anything like
turkey buzzards.

K7 - the one with the chick; K110D - the others. All with the FA 100-300.

Re: PESO: Roosting Turkey

2013-04-26 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Well, perhaps you think it's sad, Frank, bur I'm not so sure.

When I was young. I spent a lot of time at my maternal grandparents'
home, as both my parents worked. My grandfather had a small butcher
shop (in addition to his gas station on the other side of town. Since
his ethnic customer base was wary of chickens that were already dead,
he had some chicken coop, and took the eggs and the live chickens to
the store. I was hired, for a few cents, to gather eggs from the
coops.

At Thanksgiving and Christmas, everyone wanted turkeys, instead of
chickens. My grandfather was shocked by how much he had to pay for
the Turkeys, and since his customers were people of very modest means,
how little profit he could make on the turkeys he purchase. So, one
year, when I was 8 or 9, he decides to raise his own turkeys. WHAT A
MISTAKE! They are the dumbest, dirtiest, nastiest critters I have
ever encountered. I refused to go into their pen to feed them after
the first 3 or 4 attempts, which left me with scratches, bite marks
and turkey shit all over my arms and legs. Thank God they couldn't
fly; they surely would have pecked my eyes out.

No, not quite as bad. And when the geese come up on the main lawn, the turkeys
chase them away, so that is a good thing.

Thanks Dan et al for your comments.

We have often thought about converting some of the roosting turkeys
into roasting turkeys, or at least rousting them. They are kind of
like a destitute lazy brother-in-law that moves in with you: we
really like seeing them now and then, but would just as soon they
didn't take up permanent residence with us. Their droppings make a
mess on the lawn, they are constantly getting into the food we put
out in feeders for songbirds, they keep banging into the windows
while trying to fight with their reflection in the glass . . . There
are nights we have as many as 18-20 of them roosting in that tree,
though at this time of year (mating and nesting season) the flock has
dispersed somewhat. Last night there were five in the tree, but I

Thanks Dan et al for your comments.

We have often thought about converting some of the roosting turkeys into
roasting turkeys, or at least rousting them. They are kind of like a destitute
lazy brother-in-law that moves in with you: we really like seeing them now and
then, but would just as soon they didn't take up permanent residence with us.
Their droppings make a mess on the lawn, they are constantly getting into the
food we put out in feeders for songbirds, they keep banging into the windows
while trying to fight with their reflection in the glass . . . There are nights
we have as many as 18-20 of them roosting in that tree, though at this time of
year (mating and nesting season) the flock has dispersed somewhat. Last night
there were five in the tree, but I could only get the one in the frame if I
were to include the moonlight reflection in the water.

Rather eerie. Could be a scene from a Dracula movie. Roosting isn't far from
roasting. I used to breed show turkeys (whites) many years ago. Our show

Sharing some shots I took on Thanksgiving at our town's annual Turkey
Trot. I brought along a newly-acquired Pentax 60-250 after my
first outings with it a couple of weeks ago, I wasn't entirely sure I
was going to keep it. It's heavy... among other things... I tried
using it with a monopod, but I found it awkward. I've used it at a
few 5k races & for some portraits so far... my initial impression at
the races was that focus was off... but that doesn't seem to be the
