What is the best, iyo, modern Pentax brand Zoom
I mostly use the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 EX DC and the Pentax DA 18-135 f3.5- 5.6 WR. Both my lenses are excellent copies and tack sharp. Note: I get a combined seamless focal length from 10 to 135 mm (15 to 200 mm in APS-C term), covering my genre of Street, Travel, Architecture and Landscape Photography - 85% in of the time - 50/50 ratio. For that balance 15% low light situation shoots, I use the brutally sharp Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens. And for that odd sports, wildlife, naval or air show shoot, I use the Sigma 70-300 DL Macro I purchased for a song from KEH - an excellent sharp copy. Happy that I have covered all my bases including inclement weather shoots for cheap. Regards. Re: Poll: What is the best, iyo, modern Pentax-brand zoom
Best for what? The two zooms I regularly use are my 18-250 and my 16-50. If I need versatility with decent quality, it is very difficult to beat the 18-250. It's not the sharpest or fastest zoom, but it's sharp and fast enough for most things, and when you need it, the range is very handy. My 16-50 is weather sealed, reasonably fast, and pretty sharp. I find myself using it a lot more often than I expected when I got it. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Poll: What is the best, iyo, modern Pentax-brand zoom
I'm not sure that I should answer this, as I don't own a modern, i.e. a Pentax zoom that's actually being manufactured now. Nor do I own any Pentax Digital zooms, but for what it is you cannot beat the FA 20-35mm f4.0. Sharp, decent quality build, even though it's mostly plastic, it has a limitied zoom range, (ultra wide to wide on 35mm format, wide to normal on APS-C digital). Very few imaging defects. It's just a great little lens that even if I owned a more versicle zoom say the 16-50 f2.0 or 17-70 f4.0, one of which is on my short list, just not sure which, would still find it's way into my medium bag, maybe even into my small bag. All good. I have maybe a slight preference ordering: - 50-135 - 16-50 - 60-250 but they all feel good, work well, and the 16-50, plus either of the others depending on the venues you shoot in, is about all the lens anybody really needs. stan On Sep 10, 2013, at 8:17 AM, CollinB wrote: I've seen some awfully nice renderings from the DA* 16-50/2.8. I have all the DA* zooms. The 60-250/4 is the best of the bunch by a slim margin, but they're all quite good. Better than the Pentax primes I own, but I must add that I've never owned the best A* and FA* primes. I find most of you are quoting the obvious expensive (*) Zoom Lenses. Someone also mentioned out of my price range, so hope you folks get the message. Not being a Pro, we tend to avoid the obvious great expensive (*) lenses - DA 16-50 f2.8, DA 50-135 f2.8, DA 60-250 f2.8. And what a let down on the SDM. A very useful focal length range and sharp lens is the SMC FA 20-35mm f4 AL. At 245 grams very light compact too. The SMC F 24-50 f4 at just 380 grams is a stellar performer. Tack sharp too. Though I prefer full frame FA zooms as these are just as modern, the $ 400 or lesser DA 18-135 f3.5-5.6 WR is a great all rounder. At 420 grams it is pretty compact too. My copy is tack sharp and you can see the pores in the skin when blown up 100%. Some early copies were much maligned though. Regards. Note: to counter the DA 16-50 f2.8 I bought the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 the 28-75 f2.8. I was going for the best as price wasn't mentioned as a consideration. I think we understand that it's all relative. I've often been extremely pleased with lens performance and coveted the lens, only to be genuinely surprised by seeing the product of something strikingly better. Re: What is the best, iyo, modern Pentax-brand zoom
Depends on what you mean by modern. I've had 2 'F' zooms in fairly heavy use since 1989 - a 28-80 f3.5-4.5 received very heavy usage thru 2006 as it was my primarily used lens on the job and shot thousands of evidence photos with it (it has a built in macro range that was great for my work. And a 70-210 f4-5.6 which has served me admireably also since 1989. I admit the built of the 70-210 is not the most robust. And while you could spend more money on newer 'better' lenses, I've never seen enough diference to warrant the change. I have a 16-50 f2.8 DA* which I got after not being able to get a 28-70 f2.8 FA*, and other than the faster aperature I wind up using the 28-80 more often than not due to it more convenient size and weight.
