It's hot every place I've been between central Oregon and central California.
So, as much as I'd like to avoid it, it's pretty hard to miss.

Lightning

2020-08-17 Thread Larry Colen
On my drive home yesterday, first I got waylaid by a nice sunset, and that cost
me about an hour, then since I took a different route than my normal, (97
instead of 5) I stumbled across a nice vista point of Mount shasta, just as it
got dark enough for astrolandscape stuff. I was about to make my escape when
the clouds (and traffic) I had been fighting cleared up and I had to start all
over. Long story short, about 5 am I pulled over on an offramp, and while I
was rearranging the van so I’d have room to sleep, I set a camera up on a
tripod with the interval timer to try to get some photos of the lightning storm.

California doesn’t get a lot of big thunderstorms, and this one, combined with
some unusually hot weather lent a bunch of excitement to Central and Northern
CA. I kept seeing lightning until almost 9AM.

John,

If you have Ethernet, you can get WiFi at home by buying a WiFi router and
setting it up. Very very easy to do, and not expensive. WiFi routers run from
about $50 and up, and are not hard to set up at all. Makes moving data to and
from your iPhone a lot easier.

Here's a listing of software titles for PC/Windows to transfer photos:

I don't have wi-fi at home, so I needed a way to connect to my existing
Ethernet. AFAIK, Apple doesn't offer a direct Lightning to Ethernet connector.

To do what you want, without a jump through WiFi and the cloud, I’d buy a
wired hard drive and file transfer device to take them off the iPhone and
then connect that to the NAS through your desktop computer to move them
there. Easier and more reliable is to just use Dropbox or Apple’s Cloud to do
the job, which is what I use unless I just connect the iPhone to my computer
and transfer all the files to it (or a NAS) using LR or any image transfer
app on the desktop system.

Use the camera adapter to connect directly to a USB hard-drive? Or I can connect
the iPhone directly to my desktop as a USB device?

Ok, I'll search for that and give it a try. If I can get the photos to my
desktop, I can get them to the NAS.

I don’t run Windows systems so I’m not sure of the names of such apps there,
but I know Apple does supply one FoC.

The basic msg is that there’s no native app that knows how to output files to
external storage arbitrarily. Next iOS there will be. So at present you need
an app that knows how to move the data you want to move to a particular
destination.

Re: OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”

2019-08-15 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I see it neither as feature nor flaw. iOS devices are not generalized, all
purpose computers, at least not until the next iOS (and iPadOS) ships. They
were designed first for wireless communications with personal security, all
else is second to that. Judging them by the standards of general purpose
computing devices when it come to file management isn’t really sensible until
iOS becomes appropriately generalized and supports arbitrary file IO like those
computers are designed to.

You’ve heard the comment: “it is a feature, not a flaw.” In this case, the

to/from the device which, at least in principle, makes the device and the

Seems an awfully complicated way to connect an iPhone to the internet. The
adapter dongle is designed to allow USB peripherals (cameras, keyboards, etc)
to send data to the iPhone, not the iPhone to the net.

To do what you want, without a jump through WiFi and the cloud, I’d buy a wired

Easier and more reliable is to just use Dropbox or Apple’s Cloud to do the job,

The easiest way I've found to move photos and other files between an
iPhone/iPad and a PC is with an iXpand flash drive - basically an
updated version of sneaker-net.  Lightning adapter on one end and USB on
the other.  The app from Sandisk is free for iOS.

A 128 gig version will set you back about $44 and a 32 gig version is 20
bucks less.

Re: OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”

2019-08-15 Thread Stanley Halpin
I think you might be able to do what you want under iOS13 when it gets here in
September (?) but I am not sure. Right now, to move photos from my iPhone I
Airdrop or email. Simple minded, probably not the most efficient, but I seldom
have a reason to do that.

Re: OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”

2019-08-15 Thread Stanley Halpin
Yes, unmodified DNG or jpeg. If I want to put images from e.g. Lightroom onto
the iPad, I Airdrop to the iPad or first put them into iCloud and load from
there into Photos.

An alternate would be to put LR Mobile onto the iPad, synch from PS or LR to
the Adobe cloud. And they’ll appear on LR Mobile. Once in LR mobile on the
iPad, they can be exported to Photos if you need to for some reason.

But generally I do not try to use SD cards as a transfer media. With the new
iPadOS coming “real soon”, that sort of transfer should be much more feasible,
but I think the new OS won’t be working on the Air, Air 2 is the oldest as I
recall.

Re: OT - using Apple “Lightning to SD card camera reader”

2019-08-15 Thread John

I have a similar question, but going the other way.

I have an iPhone that I connect to the internet using a "Lightning to Camera
Adapter" (USB) [powered by the wall wart] connected to a USB to Ethernet adapter
and a cable to the Router.

Does the iPhone have a command similar to "Net Use" so I can offload photos from
the phone to my NAS box?

I don't want to have to put them up in the iCloud and then download them again
to get them on my local system.

I'm at whatever version of iOS that released last night.

formatted correctly or the DCIM file structure on it isn't correct.

Thanks Godfrey.

I just tried loading jpgs straight from the camera and it did work.
I haven’t figured out how to download jpegs that have been perfected through
photoshop. I downloaded jpegs from my pc to an SD card but they are not
recognized by the iPad on import.

lighting - the clouds have an influence as they are reflecting some of

tweaking to 'correct' for perceived imbalance is accepted in my book. I

If you want some fun reading, Google "color temperature of lightning".

I generally find that any *fixed* WB will work because in Camera Raw I'm
going to use the eye dropper tool to select some spot in the clouds that
I think should be more or less 18% gray and then sync the rest of them
to the first one.

Snide comment aside, I like the pic, especially the lighting of the
clouds. Was it really that purple color?

Re: PESO - Lightning Strike, Polzeath, Cornwall 2014

2014-07-18 Thread Bob W-PDML
Very nice, especially the way the cloud is lit.

I went to the Dennis Hopper exhibition after work today, and cycled home at
about 9pm, all the time watching the lightning flashing in the dense black
clouds in the east. Felt the occasional fat drop of rain, but no downpour. The
whole thing was a magnificent sight, and when I was cycling along the river in
Greenwich the walkway was lined with people taking photos of the lightning over
the Dome, and each time there was a flash a great cheer went up from the
passengers on the pleasure cruisers.

PESO - Lightning Strike, Polzeath, Cornwall 2014

2014-07-18 Thread Steve Cottrell
Spent a few days in Cornwall and we have some hot air coming up the
latitudes from Spain. Treated to a good show last night and managed to
capture something half decent with the Fuji X-E1 and Pentax A*85/1.4
balanced on a bread tin atop an ironing board on the holiday apartment
balcony!

Settled on 800 ISO with about f/5.6 and kept doing 10 second exposures
one after the other, finger on the shutter holding it down in Bulb mode.

Back at home now and we have a couple of days of more rough weather -
it's bakin hot here!

I was driving home from Texas and pulled over to take a nap. When I woke up

The photo "straight out of the camera" was pretty cool:

Having Lightroom automatically adjust the exposure made a definite improvement:

I’m still not entirely satisfied with it, but I think that I’ve made some

The above post was motivated because a friend talked me into joining her photo

PESO and a story, Texas Lightning

2014-05-04 Thread Larry Colen
Last night I pulled the birthday present cop out of letting a friend choose a
photo (or two) out of my portfolio. One of the prints was one I did several
years, and generations of lightroom ago. To replace the print, I reprocessed
the photo. After I got the print back from costco, I went back and massaged it
a bit more.

I was driving home from Texas and pulled over to take a nap. When I woke up
(probably about 2:30 rather than the 12:30 the exif shows because of my not
resetting time zones) there was lightning off in the distance. I set up my
camera on a tripod with my 77/1.8 and started taking 20 second exposures. For
one of the exposures, I got several lightning strikes.

The photo "straight out of the camera" was pretty cool:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/13915457390/in/set-72157644505096665
Having Lightroom automatically adjust the exposure made a definite improvement:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/14078952556/in/set-72157644505096665
My first reprocessing attempt gave it a lot more pop:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/13915393947/in/set-72157644505096665
But, I wasn't entirely satisfied with it. After a bit more work, I've got:

K20D, FA77 f/1.8 20 seconds

I’m still not entirely satisfied with it, but I think that I’ve made some
improvments. Further suggestions are most welcome.

The above post was motivated because a friend talked me into joining her photo

Heads-up : Rokinon 24 mm /1.4 for K-mount on Amazon lightning deals (Sunday)

2013-11-30 Thread Igor Roshchin

Just in case: it looks like tomorrow (Sunday), on Amazon, one of the
"lightning deals" at 1:50pm CST, will be Rokinon 24mm/1.4 for Pentax.

I don't know how much it will go for, but I thought I'd let you guys
know, just in case somebody would be tempted.

It is a manual focus lens. And, as far as I understand, all Rokinon
lenses for Pentax are "A", i.e. have automatic aperture.

Wouldn't surprise me as they're plainly not made for lighting as such.
Probably powered by a small transformer at 12VAC or thereabouts.

Curiously I saw more similar bulbs at another venue on the weekend
where I was attending a birthday bash. A few of the invitees were
architects and when I mentioned the lights they indicated that it's
now all the rage and they are being used in many new architectural
designs about the city. We have effectively banned filament lighting
for energy conservation reasons so I assume that they get special
allowances as they are effectively a decorative element.

old filament lamps running at low voltage like this too, I didn't
manage to shoot any however. Maybe I should next time, thanks for the

That sounds like perfect timing. I had heard that the key for lightening
shots was a very long exposure - have to try this in the future, though
I think I'd need the cable thingie to ge the K5 to go longer than 30

On my last night out, the storm clouds started building up and flashing
inside... we never really saw any storm activity (disappointing) but it
was sure fun watching the clouds on the horizon blink and flash for a
couple of hours before going to bed!

I set up as long an exposure (almost) as it would let me do without "Dark Frame
Subtraction" and then I just fiddled with ISO and f-stop to get something in
the ballpark. I think a K-X would have been ideal here for higher sensitivity,
but oh well!

I really like that photo further down because it shows such a thin line of

What is most striking to me (pun intended) is that what is interesting
about it is simply the oddness of the event ... "the fact that" - as a
photo, it's _not_ so interesting. The one farther down on the page,

information - that is the unusualness of two bolts simultaneously
striking those two buildings.

coincidental, lightning happens faster than human reaction) but the

Re: PESO: Thunderbolt and lightning

2009-06-13 Thread Jack Davis

Years ago, when I lived in the mid-west, I tried catching a bolt of lightening
on film. No chance! By the time I realized there had been a flash, it was too
late.
You just have to open the shutter, wait and hope. The darker the scene the
better.
At least with digital you can delete and try again at no cost except battery
drain.

He could have been talking about a camera with an electronic view finder -
I've used a Niknon 5700 with EVF, which was very impractrical to use to
capture actions images - push the release, count 1, 2 - picture captured.

Recently saw a TV moment featuring a person known for his lightening/sever
storm photos. When asked if he used film or digital, (his equipment showed
an SLR) he explained that he shoots film, "because there is a shutter lag
with digital which would cause him to miss the lightening bolt." What a
double container!
