After excising all the superfluous crap that comes with it (and, previous to that, working out _how_ to excise the superfluous crap) I find that Vista is apparently better than XP, which croaked on me after I installed the (downloaded by myself from Microsoft) Service Pack III. It's only been two weeks, though. From: P. J. Re: Pentax software updates
There are so many ways that Vista can go wrong, and so much superfluous crap that you can't get rid of, because it's built into the basic OS that I won't have it on any hardware I own. Hell I don't run XP on anything I'm using, I's still using Win2K, which seems to be extraordinarily stable, and fast compared to XP or Vista. mike wilson wrote: After excising all the superfluous crap that comes with it (and, previous to that, working out _how_ to excise the superfluous crap) I find that Vista is apparently better than XP, which croaked on me after I installed the (downloaded by myself from Microsoft) Service Pack III. Pentax software needs to be run in Administrator mode on Vista in order to function correctly. Right click on the icon and select Run as Adminstrator if you haven't tried that yet. Excellent. Thanks Eugene. Oddly, I'm using a logon that has admin privileges, but the software seems to need to be told especially. Re: Pentax software updates
You're welcome. By the way, for any Linux fans in PDML land, there is an equivalent to the Pentax remote assistant software for the Linux OS. It's on sourceforge.net with the name PK-remote and needs to be downloaded and compiled locally to work (no binary packages yet). It's kind of rough around the edges with only one developer working on it but the basic functionality is there. Derby Chang wrote: Excellent. Thanks Eugene. I skipped the last version owing to the fact that it would have caused me great hassles due to the widely reported third party lens issues. What I didn't remember was that you had to have the original disc on hand. Since I'd simply down-loaded the original files (and pdf manual) they were all still packed away unopened (at the bottom of a big box of course). Do they think someone would be idiot enough to steal? Re: More pentax software updates?
The actual failure occurs when your lens gives it's name as 'blank' - as in nothing. I have several 3rd party lenses and two of them give this type of name. One of them reports as an FA lens and the another reports -- --. I'm pretty sure it is in the parser of the exif data that is blowing up on unexpected (lack of) data. -- Best regards, Bruce Tuesday, March 9, 2004, 2:12:36 PM, you wrote: C Yeah, I heard about it from the list and was worried that I would have a C problem with my non-pentax lenses, but never did. If it didn't work for non-Pentax C lenses, you would think that it would not have worked for SMC-A lenses as C well. My Sigma 300/4 still shows up as Pentax FA 300/4.5 IF... pentax software updates
http://www.pentaxusa.com/digitalupdate/ Check out the latest firmware and software updates from PENTAX to enhance the performance of your digital camera. *istD * *istD Firmware Update Version 1.10 http://www.pentaxusa.com/products/cameras/istd/istd_fw_110.htm * *istD Photo Browser/Laboratory Update V.1.10 http://www.pentaxusa.com/products/cameras/istd/istd_swupdate.htm * RAW Plugin Module for Photoshop http://www.pentaxusa.com/digitalupdate/includes/ps_plug.zip * *istD Photo Browser/Laboratory Update V.1.10 http://www.pentaxusa.com/digitalupdate/includes/istd_swupdate.zip What do the Software (not firmware) updates add? Is it simply support for the newer EXIF format, or have they made some needed improvements to the actual functioning of the programs? I still use Nikon View (or gqview under linux) to browse *istD pictures because the Nikon program is much more mature. Hopefully whatever DSLR from pentax comes out next will include improved software bundled with it. I'm contemplating writing my own linux picture desk software since nothing I've used does exactly what I want, but it is a hell of a project. DJE

i don't see anything of importance other than EXIF 2.21 support. even that is of neglible importance. i really don't see the point of requiring the CD in the computer. anyone who doesn't have the camera won't want it anyway.
