actually, if you just use the guidelines ...
f11@1/125th or equivalent w/ a #25 red filter
and frame brightly-lit subjects w/ minimal shadowed areas,
preferably w/ lowish angle sun from behind you
and don't overdevelop - you'll have good results

using a non-IR calibrated meter will lead you astray
as often as not

Make sure you load the film in the dark...and take it out in the
dark. Get
it processed as soon as you can. Keep it in the fridge until then.

YES!  wait until night in a darkened room, if need be

Do you know about focusing for Infrared film?
The little red dot on the lens?

you will only need to concern yorself w/ this for close-in
shots and/or wide apertures at modest distance.
tight apertures and distance basicly eliminate need for
concern.

see here for examples of this simple meterless technique:

2002-03-14 Thread Frantisek Vlcek

Hi,
there is a very good IR faq done by one LF guy, Clive Warren, it's
   at www.cocam.co.uk I think.

   Also, the W.J.Markerink's IR site:
   http://www.a1.nl/phomepag/markerink/

   HTH,
   Frantisek

BTW, Bill, it seems you like the hybrid IR results you get with
only #25 red filter? You don't use a stronger red/ir filter
like at least #29 or best #70? With these you can still focus
but I guess it's de gustibus non est desputandum :) (no
   dispute over one's taste)

Ah Ha.The mole was making a mountaing
Thanks all for the replies, and your patience.
Bill,i'll probably use the S3 for this,as it is
meterless too, and the 55 1.8 that came with it.
I also have the 105,135 and 200.Its 36 frames so
why not try em all.eh

Thanks

+3 stops so now i need to set ISO at 400 to meter through

Sorry if i'm making a mountain out of the proverbial

Dave, just don't use your meter at all.  It doesn't read IR, so it
won't
give you an accurate reading.  Shoot in bright light at 1/125 f11
with
the filter on, and just trust the Force.  ;)

Heck, I've loaded the stuff in broad daylight (and I'm talking noon in
Macau, here) and had quite acceptable results. There was a bit of obvious
light-leakage though, although it's didn't bother me. If you're a purist
carry around a spare black t-shirt and use that as a changing bag.

Yep, set your camera for f8+

I got my first lab job at age 14, and have been explaining this stuff

don't offer your typical one-hour-developprint). The simplest
explanation is almost always the best one. ;)

Part of what I love about PDML (and my lab) is that I can say 'f-stop'
without getting a blank stare.
