Taco (http://tacosw.com/) is a very nice, inexpensive ($25) HTML and
PHP editor which includes dynamic preview.

Generally speaking, while I use iWeb, Lightroom and other apps to
generate HTML some of the time, I almost always end up doing some
editing myself on the generated output. Taco and BBEdit (or the free

I've had another look with both Firefox and IE6 - I can't see any
evidence of the yellow boxes on the front page but they do show up in
certain galleries. I haven't had time to go through all of the
galleries but, as a couple of examples, I can see the yellow boxes (in
both browsers) in the New York, New York gallery when mousing over
both thumbnails and the actual images. I don't see the same problem
with the on the Road Again gallery.

When the yellow boxes appear they contain the Caption text, so they are
most distracting where you have long captions.

Another thing I noticed on those two galleries is that the images in On
the Road Again come up with a drop down Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down panel
on the top right but that doesn't appear on the images in New York, New
York.

Good job, Ann. Nice overview of your work, and logical layout.

I mentioned before that I had written a little about you and your
photography on my blog. Here is the copy:

I’ve been wanting to write a post about a photographer I know who has
such an incredible eye for absurdity, and who has produced some of the
funniest photographs I’ve ever seen. Her name is Ann Sanfedele, and I
have a personally autographed copy of this image, which makes me smile
every time I look at it. She is, in my opinion, criminally
under-celebrated, and not just when it comes to her comic images, but
for the overall body of work she has created over multiple decades.
Several of my regular readers know Ann, but many of you don’t. When you
get a chance, check out her work here. Order some of it. Be the first on

Obviously the links in there don't work here, but they are live on my site.

Yellow boxes???
What yellow boxes???
yikes!

MIke -- I was playing around with color stuff yesterday .. thought I was
making some text less white and screwed up...
that being said -- I presume you mean the details coming up when you do
a slide show... if you click on the thumbnails instead and then next'
that doesn't happen...

I'll also go and look at each gallery -- if you were looking at the
Comfort Diner stuff, the captions are stories...
and I have to have them there... but there is, hopefully, a way to get
rid of captions for the slide show.

I presume you were carefully looking at the work, not just the front
page... I haven't changed anything within

galleries at all...

Could you send me a link to the gallery you saw this in?
There were some system wide bugs a bit ago, too...

I know I don't want yellow boxes anywhere :-)

thanks for pointing that out!

I hope I can correct what you mean --- apparently when you mouse over a
thumb the whole gallery description
shows up in a text box... annoying enough, to me as well as you, but
then there was a brief time when I was trying out
colors for what I thought was only tiny text and used yellow... took it
out immediately when I saw that it made the

text under the thumbnails yellow...

there must be a way I can change this with code - at least I hope so...
Once you enter a gallery there is plenty of time

to read what I want you to read and what I need to keep in there.

Meanwhile, Im surrounded by otehr peoples medical emergencies today

Yes, photography teacher (last year), though tires was one of my best shots.

I couldn't remember if I'd ever showed the Trinidad Light one online.
Possibly I didn't. I shot several of it, and that was the least sunlit one

Which I

Monterey Bay Aquarium (probably one of the best around.) Big tanks for jelly
fish with big glass fronts. Before I went I asked Bruce (Dayton) how to
shoot them (since he'd done it already). Anyway, I just used what he
recommended
and it worked great. Hmmm, looking at the exitfs on the raws, flash off, 1/50
at f 1.8. (I had a 50mm fast lens, which he recommended I use. It goes down
to 1.8. For that matter, I still have it.) Seems I had the ISO on automatic,
and it ranged from 100-400 approximately.

I really enjoyed shooting them. It was a memorable experience.

A few days ago I started doing a few minor updates to my web site. It

most formatting off to the stylesheets).
WOndered if you'd have a look and see what you think.

Aside from the fact that I hate stylesheets it looks very good.
Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what the layout was before but
this does strike me as being a bit different. Still a clean easy to
navigate interface, with easy to read typefaces and good contrasting colors.

Hi Boris,

I took a look through all your pages. Overall the layout is good,
easy to understand, reasonable to navigate. There are still a few
broken HTML links, it' hard to catch them all in one shot!

I'm not sure I like the switch from gray surround on the main page to
black on the picture pages, I'd prefer the page background to be
consistent. I tend to prefer light gray over dark gray or black
surrounds, but whatever you prefer ought to be consistent.

You are presenting quite a number of excellent photos! It's nice to
see a body of work presented together, gives a better sense of what
you're doing than the occasional picture or two.

That's a valid point of course. What I thought I should do is make photo
pages in such a way that background color would be possible to choose,
like it is done by some of the photo site I am member of. But I need to
learn how to do it in the first place.

Boris, there are several free automatic broken link checkers out there
which might help. For example:
http://validator.w3.org/checklink
which has the benefit of not even having to install anything, and
http://linkchecker.sourceforge.net/
which is available for Windows or Unix/Linux/MacOS

But more importantly, excellent photos! I particularly liked Coffee

Everything seems to load quickly w/Firefox. Haven't had time to look at
all the photos yet but what I've seen look great.

It seems your server OS is case sensitive and the case of your page
filenames is different from the URL pointing to the page. For example,
I can link to your photos page using the URL in your post which is all
lower case and the page loads fine. From your home page, if I click on
photos and it comes up a 404 the URL has some mixed upper case letters.

As suggested to me by others, i create a folder through the ftp client i
use(fetch) and
put my photos in
that file with the index the web page made.
That way everything works together. Example, pictures taken at the horse show
this weekend
will be
in folders 2006-chancefri
2006-chancesat and 2006-chancesun.

So my link would be www dot caughtinmotion dot com / 2006-chancefri/index dot

I have found i don't need the last bit with the index, it just goes there.

Hope that helps

I have JAlbum and to start with was satisfied. But some of the slides
end up with nasty jaggies and others with noise that looks like film
grain. For example I did some shop interiors with fluorescent light
fitting hanging from the ceiling. The straight edges of the fittings
look like miniatures staircases. Shelves and racks show the same jagged
edges. I thought at first this was my fault -- some of the images had
been sharpened in Photoshop. So I tried with untouched TIFF files --
same problem. It works quite well with some subjects and I have a large
gallery of crystal pictures on my website that is perfect. But a gallery
of flower macros have some pretty awful slides -- so noisy they're
unusable. I have no idea what's going on or why. The jagged edges must
have something to do with the conversion and scaling routines -- I
suppose. But the noise?

I don't seem to have this problem with Jalbum. Have you ticked that
slides are linked to originals? And are the size limitations wider than
originals?

Re: web page building software

That sounds like a good idea. I make the galleries directly from TIFFs
from the RSE converted directory. The galleries are not an end, but
merely serve to show progress, or something I'm busy with, to other
microscopy people. I haven't noticed either of the problems with
photomicrographs.

 Hi Don,

I can't say I've noticed these problems. Most of the galleries I made with
jalbum are for quickly sharing snapshots with friends and family. I can't
say I've been overly critical of them. The ones I have online look fine to
me (at least in that regard :o)
Thinking about it, I'm not even sure I used the resizing option in Jalbum:
my photo's are scanned negatives, and I usually resize the to something
 web-friendly during post-processing...

I can run a quick test of Jalbum's resize algorithms vs photoshop and
 irfanview tonight, if you like?

I quite like this freeware called Web Album Generator:
http://www.ornj.net/webalbum/

I write my main pages by hand but use Web Album Generator for my quick
galleries like this:
http://www.robertstech.com/temp/feature
The software *will* do more elaborate galleries, too. Download it and
give it a try. What the heck, it's free.

Porta Web Album Generator - easy to use interface, works fast, freeware,
generates album in javascript

BreezeBrowser - downloadable trial version, costs about 90USD, lots of
other features, image management, batch file renaming, IPTC editing,
album templates easily modified

http://www.breezesys.com/

Not an album generator, but a web page creator/editor - open source,
tabbed interface to switch from WYSIWYG to source code

Actually, I wrote simple HTML code for my home page - but it
is kind of a mess --
(not because I'm using plain HMTL however:) )
HOWEVER, photo.net does it for you and except that the most
recent photos loaded
appear within a gallery folder first, the portfolios
themselves can be moved around.
However it is time consuming to upload those a photo at a
time.

As Ann suggested, Photo.net may be worth looking into. There are
quite a few free gallery services which are very easy to use. Flickr
seems to be popular, though not to my liking. picasaweb.google.com is
simple to use, has a fairly clean interface and loads well on a
dial-up connection.

HTH.

I can think of four off-hand that would do a great job of building a
web page photo gallery

Photoshop
Photoshop Elements
iView MediaPro *
JBuilder

* This is the one I use to generate thumbnail galleries. I then take
its HTML output and embed it into the pages I wrote in HTML.

Oops. Web Album Generator is intended for use installed on a *web

Gallery:

Gallery is really nice, though.

Gallery is also a server-side install. Might I recommend Porta instead?

No it isn't! I just installed it and ran it on my desktop. Generates
galleries similar to the way Adobe Photoshop does but with quite a lot
more versatility and customizability. And unlike Photoshop it's free.

How the heck did you get that to work? Since Gallery requires a
webserver, PHP and certain image manipulation libraries.
