Things have definitely taken a turn for the worse since Dutroux in Belgium and the accident of an estranged British housewife in Paris. Today, we're the perverts trying to snatch pics of their kids. I've taken photos of the blast furnace plant in Seraing with a few buildings behind me when a crowd emerged from those houses and almost lynched me because they "knew what's going on with the houses and the children and all that...". Another time, some guy with a bad case of testosterone poisoning followed me in his car all across Liège and insisted on seeing my ID because I had taken photos in his neighborhood and my car had foreign numberplates. I won't mention the guy who stormed out of his house wanting to know why I had taken pictures of it (I hadn't) or the woman who kicked my Zoom audio recorder off a sea wall in Ostend because she thought I had photographed her with it. I've all but given up taking photos when there are people and, worse still, children around. It's just not worth it anymore. It has become a tradition and a kind of second home. We love the area because it has a number of advantages. It's on the sea, we can be on the Belgian coast in 30 minutes and in England in a little over 2 hours. We can spend a day shopping and sightseeing in Kent and be back 'home' in France in the late evening. We love the North Sea, especially when it's rough and stormy. Did I mention the enormous steel mill and the sea port full of great things to photograph? If I could create the ideal place for me it would be just like that. We might even have moved there, years ago, but with two elderly mothers, things weren't as easy and now we're ourselves a little old for that. In the meantime, things have changed. Our friend who used to take care of our cats while we were gone hasn't survived her heart surgery, our landlord in Dunkirk has fallen from the roof and most of all there are the migrants, or rather the French police who think two guys in a car with German numberplates hanging around at the beach or in the harbour have got to be people smugglers. As some of you might know, I've ditched Adobe's ransomware in favour of ON1 Photo RAW and its denoising never ceases to amaze me. Best of all, it doesn't only work on RAW files from digital cameras but also on TIFF files with analog film data and the results with scans of 25 year old 400 ISO stock are incredible. Whatever I throw at it, noisy stuff from my *istDS or grainy colour film, I've got a bunch of shots that I'd never have published otherwise. Re: Slide scanners
Am 15.05.23 um 16:21 schrieb Rick Womer: I’d like to start digitizing some of my 35mm slides. There are about a dozen slide-and-film scanners on Amazon, with prices ranging from about $140 to $350. Any recommendations or warnings? The really good film scanners are no longer available new. I've used various Nikon sanners over the last 20+ years. They all have the diadvantage of their rather 'harsh' light source that tends to emphasize film grain. Somewhat like the difference between enlargers with condensers and diffuse light sources. Their second drawback is that the film plane and the light source/mirror are disposed horizontally: more room to collect dust. So they needed regular cleaning by the local Nikon service. I've been using a Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400 for many years now and I'm very happy with the results. The scan quality is excellent and it comes with carriers for digitizing 4 framed slides or strips of 6 negs in one go. The innards are positioned vertically and I've never needed to have it cleaned. The optical quality of this Minolta scanner is so good that many are now cannibalised by people using teir lens for macro photography since some *beeep* blabbed about it in his photo blog. Software is no problem as this scanner is supported by Ed Hamrick's Vuescan (www.hamrick.com) even under the latest versions of Windoze and Mac OS. Ralf -- Ralf R.
