Dear Pestlist:

I am the Mellon Fellow in Costume and Textiles Conservation at the
Philadelphia Museum of Art and am currently assisting with the museum's
pest monitoring and management programs. Eliza Spaulding, the Mellon
Fellow in Paper Conservation, and I are researching different
institutions' IPM policies. We hope to gather a number of policies,
which we can then share with members of the PMA's Conservation
Department as we work to create an IPM policy here. The IPM policies
posted on museumpests.net have provided a great starting place for our
research. While many pest concerns are common to all museums, we would
be especially interested to read IPM policies from museums with fine art
collections. If you are able to share your institution's policy with us,
please email me at laura.m...@philamuseum.org

Thank you for your consideration and best wishes for the new year.

Cheers,

Laura Mina

Dear Laura (and others interested in this topic),

It will be interesting to see what responses your posts elicit and I hope
you will share the results of your research with this list. I thought that
it might be of interest to give the perspective of the IPM Working Group
(the group that created museumpests.net) on this issue.

The policy and procedure documents on museumpests.net were gathered by
members of our standards and best practices sub-group. They were elicited
by posts to various listservs, direct contacts with colleagues, submissions
from participants at our meetings, etc. All the documents on the site were
reviewed and vetted by the group to ensure that we were posting documents
that contained appropriate information. There were many other documents
that were either redundant, less well written or contained inaccuracies. It
was also interesting to note that only a small number of institutions
actually had written policies (although we hope that this is changing) and
that the percentage of art museums that had policies was even smaller. You
should also take a careful look the information available on museumpests.net
that explains the difference between policy and procedure documents. We
found that many institutions didn't have this clear which is important to
ensure that the intent and audience of the documents is properly targeted.

Even when an institution had a policy it was sometimes challenging to get
them to share it publicly. We have been working hard to dispel the notion
that having a policy means that you have a pest problem! We hope that
museumpests.net's resources have helped spur other institutions to develop
policy and procedure documents.

I want to emphasize that I am writing this not to discourage you in your
quest to collect other documents, but if people aren't forthcoming hopefully
you'll understand why that might be. There was a clear need for this
information when our group started working and while we wanted to provide
good examples for everyone, we also really hope that people will read them
and then use the templates to help ensure that they are developing documents
that work for their own particular institutional need.

If anyone is willing to share their documents for possible inclusion on the
site please contact the IPM Working Group's Prevention committee chair Derya
Golpinar at dgolpi...@rmanyc.org

Best,

Rachael
