Joan and Rob, We were very lucky here in Florida that with Sandy's passing missed us and we only received light rain but winds at about 60mph. I really feel sorry for anyone this has really effected. It's been a couple of years since the last storm hit here but I have been through it before and really bad thing and loss of life can happen. I wish all that was effected a speedy recovery! The show was filled to capacity with brisk sales and buyers from around the world. Our compliments to Michael Devecka for his planning and work that makes this show a grand success. We also visited the museum at the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park at 37 Christie Street, Edison NJ. During a visit to the center you can enjoy a personal guided tour of the two-room museum filled with original artifacts, Edison phonographs and an exact model replica of Edison's laboratory constructed with origin pieces of the original building. Re: [Phono-L] NPR phonograph celebrities
Bob, Thank you so much for your story. It's really cool to have mentors and people that are willing to be helpful and educate the rest of us not as advance or just in sharing information. I have several people I have thanks for through out the years I have enjoyed collecting. If it was not for them helping and providing me information I would never be where I am in collecting. The learning has not stopped for me and right now I am learning so much from Steve Medved, Thank you. And if it was not for Joan $ Robin Rolfs along with Bob Coon introducing me to collecting I would have never started and found a stable and long lasting love for Phonographs. I even have the first Columbia Q that I found in a garage sale for $15 dollars. I really didn't know what I had but had a hunch at what it might be. I took it to the antique mall in Wisconsin where Joan and Robin have a booth and that started close to 2 decades to now and takes me back to my mid 20's plus the introduction to Collecting Clubs and Societies. I have made several friends sence then. Maybe not in touch as I would like but I know I can always go to them for help and information. It's an aspect of my life that I am very proud to have and a fond affection for it. Steve, Ya, I will get you some pictures tomarrow. I did not know the mandral is press fit and could be taken off the rod. The rod is in good condition so that will not need to be replaced. So I learned something today. I am so thankful for Phono-L with all the info I get to read and new thinghs I learn. Thank you very much Steve. I really appreciate all the help. You really saved my neck in not blowing my money on something I would not need sence it is only the mandrel that I can change out. Expect pictures tomarrow. The mandrel itself is press fit on so if only the mandrel is bad that can be replaced as the home and triump mandrels are all the same and easy to find. If the rod itself is damaged that can be machined as the end gate pivot is adjustible. If the pivot is messed up again it can be machined. Ron Sitko can replace the mandrel on your shaft. The mandrel and shaft are not one piece. You can often find mint condition 2 minute mandrels for two minute machines, I have seen them sell for around $50 on eBay. TDB is a Model B Triumph upgrade mandrel, but if only the mandrel is damaged that is very easy to replace. I would suggest in the future when you have a problem describe it first so that you can get the best advice on how to fix it instead of making assumptions that may be a lot more costly. Steve I was able to find a copy of a letter Edison sent to his dealers telling about the different mandrel upgrades for the home and triumphs. The lengths of the triumph feed screws are as follows: The A is 4 27/32 and is marked T D A I and TA on the feedscrew and the mandrel. The B is 5 and is marked T D B I, TBI, or just a large TB on the mandrel and the end of the feed screw is also marked. The C is 5 1/4 and is marked T D C I on the feedscrew and the mandrel. I have never seen a C except for a pulley. The D and E (and F I assume) is marked T D only. The pulley is marked with an A B C or D. If you put a Triumph B mandrel on a Triumph A you have to move the upper bedplate to the right all the way to compensate or the belt hits where it goes through the lower bedplate. I believe the pulleys are the same, and think the shifters on the C kits have the lip like the D and higher does, but I have only seen one home C and one triumph C with the kit so I can’t say for certain. Re: [Phono-L] Looking for a screw for a BK....
John Robles along with everyone else, I don't think I said anything about it but I just returned from a 4 day visit to Washington DC, I attended the Internation AIDS Conference held every four years, where the AIDS Heath Care Foundation (AHF) paid for my travel, hotel stay, food and driver sence with my Avascular Necrosis would not beable to do all the walking that it would take if I was on foot and I am in need of a total left hip replacement. AHF is a interneation Not-For-Profit organization that covers 22 countrys, out of all 22 countries the USA is the only one that has Waiting List for people under insured, low income or without insurance at all. AHF requested me to speak at the conference so I had to prepair a 15 to 20 mintue speach and I address a croud in the conference room at the hotel I was staying in and there was roughly 1800 people that attended that gathering. I love doing things like this, as it gives me something positive to do and hope my efforts help reduce the number of newly infected people each year. The infection rage in the USA is averaged to about 1 person every 16 minutes. That for me and my view is just not acceptable and with all we know about HIV and how it is passed, the newly infected rate with in the USA is not acceptable. 30 years into the crisis and still not all people know how to protect themselves and education is a major part in prevention. I am so happy I was able and asked to do this. This is the first time the conference has been held in the USA. Before Obama lifted the ban on people with HIV/AIDS entering this country the conference has had to be held in other countries. I can honestly say I am very PROUD of what I do and it makes me happy to even know I might prevent even one person from becoming infected. My calling came after I helped one of my best long time friends die and watching this and how long and painful with all the suffering he went through I just knew I had to become involved and do something. I hope that this does not turn anyone off sence I know this is a scary and touchy subject and I have had negitive reactions from people before but I know and have seen how supporting the Phono Collecting community is and I am very thankful for that. I am also thankful that I am able to continue to collect phonographs and graphophones as this has been my 19 year passion and I just love it. Here in the small mile square town that I live in I was really happy to take some of my machines into the middle annd high school and educate and show the kids where there Cd's and other recording medium and where it all started from. I was very hard pressed to find even one kid that ever had seen, heard or every was taught the history of recorded sound. Here's wishing everyone good health and much happiness in the future, Kenneth Keeton PS: If it was not for my computer and android phone I would not have been able to keep up with the messages or post my own here on Phono-L while I was away. The BE is approx. 8 long and the BF is approx. 10 long - the adaptation would not have worked in reverse - a BF kit will not work on a BE. No one seemed to know much about Columbia 2/4 conversions when I was researching mine earlier this year, so I have learned quite a bit about them. First, if you find a kit, it has to include a feedscrew with the gearing attached and an adapter plate with a locking post for the conversion to work. Make sure all the parts are there before purchasing one, because they are a needle in a haystack to find. The pics of my machine with the BE adapter on it are on the above website. Although, Columbia made the adapter kits to be used with a number of machines, they apparently did not make many of them because the cost for the adapter was almost as much as the original machine and Columbia did not make 4 minute cylinders (other than the Indestructible brand). [Phono-L] My story...
Hello everyone, I made a statement that I was thinking about posting my story here for everyone to read from my introduction to phonographs at the age of 26 in 1993 and followed by my 19 year obsession. I had a great group of people that took me under there wing and guided me and gave me a great education and showed me the ropes on collecting and everything that I needed to know to be a successful collector and all the years I have spent as a younger man. I have had 3 people that wanted me to do this and I just wanted to make sure everyone would be interested in my story of live and collecting through hard times and good. Comments are welcome, Kenneth Keeton ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org

Ken, If you would like to see what a BE conversion looks like, go to our webpage: http://www.carolinaphonosociety.com/ After clicking on ENTER, you will be on the page with a woman and Nipper - at the top of the page, click on the link Columbia BF 2-4 minute conversion I recently did the same thing you are attempting to do with your BE, to my BF machine. However, I could not find the actual BF conversion kit and adapted a BE conversion kit to work. The main difference between the two is the length of the feedscrew. It was also at the end of the cylinder age, when most people were starting to opt for disc records. David, I went back and check with the Columbia Phonograph Companion Vol. 1, and you are very right. There was more than one attachmemt made to work. on different machines. Oops, Thank you for correcting me. I should have double checked my facts before talking out of foggy memory and scatchy mental pictues. Still I would love to find a BE 2/4 minute attachment. I wander if the other attachment for the BK might work on my Columbia Oxford, it was based on the BK but my Oxford Machinehad has the bedplate and gearing all look to be identical to the BK. The Oxford case is plain with trim around bedplate and base of machine. It is correct to be without decals of any kind other than the double pinsripe on the Japaned black lacker bedplate. Information passed on to me by Tim Fabrizio about the interesting fact that they did not decal the case at all, just plane oak. The tone arm conmected to the horn support is painted glossy black to match the backmount and bedplate, the elbow connecting to the reproducer and the slide tube are nickeled. The slide tube just turns under and connects to the elbow unlike the BKT that has a U Tube at the end of the slide. I have a really nice larger Columbia Black Petals Horn with raised accents aound each petal and there this is a double yellow rose decal on each of the petals too. I really like the way it looks with the black parts of the machine. I will attach a photo with this posting so you can see the machine. I am quite proud of it as I am sure you can tell. But not as proud as my mahogany Triumph and Home model A long case. Any ways David, I would like to say thanks for correcting me, I have learned many things from the post that have been made here. It is the same attachment that fits the BK, BF, BG, BO and the BQ. If anyone has a complete attachment for sale I would really love to know and if you have any leads to where I can find one, it would be most helpful. The wooden horn came out around August 1910 and was available as an option from then on. According to the Frow book the Model F and G triumph came with the wooden horn but since Edison is the king of variety I am certain there were exceptions. I am not certain how accurate the Phonograph section of the Frow book is but the reproducer and recorder section if full of errors and omissions, mostly omission in the recorder section. Because of the Frow book the 2 minute sapphire Model B is the most misunderstood reproducer Edison made. He got the Model N reproducer backwards and does not mention the trowel N reproducer not to be confused with the N-56. When a reproducer was made and when it was put on a phonograph and when the phonograph was stamped with a serial number were not all the same in all cases. At least one suitcase standard in the 42,000 range was stamped with a serial number after Feburary 1902 and sent to Canada to be sold with an automatic reproducer made in the middle of 1901. This suitcase model does not have the serial numer raised lug and the serial number is stamped on the nickel ID plate. An one suticase standard in the 26000 range has he later brass ID plate. You see Model B homes with decals and the 2/4 minute upgrades, you see standard D's with the pin striping and an ID plate that does not say combination, you see Model D standards with the combination ID plate, the home C is found with pinstriping and decals. You see the maroon gem with the GEM decal on the machine. You see triumphs with the raised panel not paralles to the base. You see Edison phonographs with incorrect serial numbers. Home E 994618 is an example of this the home E is found in the 400,000 range and not that many homes were made. Also at the end of production runs earlier parts show up which is why you find the earlier B weights later on. The drilled B weight is found in both stamped and unstamped versions. The Frow book says it is not clear why the B was made and there was never an adjusting arm. The B was armed up until at least 30,000 and from 40,000 to 110,000 the word reproducer is not on the B as the top that was made for the arm was used as the reproducer stamped top came out around 110,000. The armed B is seldom found after 40,000 but they were made for use on the Edison Bell Duplex and the concert phonograph. If the B was never armed it would not have been produced before 110,000. It is easy to see why Frow did not understand the B as in England it mainly appeared on the Gem, but look at the Standard E which was only available here and he got that one correct. From 1 to around 17,000 the B has the arm and no notch. There are two types of tops found. Up until the mid 6500 range the B top has thin plating with machine marks visible. From 17,000 to 30,000 the B retained its arm with the notch added. From 40,000 to 110,000 the B top does not have the word reproducer and two different tops are found with the width of the flat around the sound tube and the outside dome varies and the weight is stamped B. Around 110,000 the weight was drilled and tapped to accomodate an extra lead weight. From around 150,000 on the B was given a 2.2 ounce lead or lead alloy weight. The first B has a 1.2 ounce weight and the C weight varies from 1.2 to 1.3 ounces. It took the 2.2 ounce weight to have the volume the hanging weight does. The automatic is another reproducer that is greatly left out. The period of time from 1900 to 1902 is largely omitted as is the period after the fire. The recorder section is even worse. 2 and 4 minute recorders were made after the fire as was the CHK. The diamond B was made into 1926 at least and the last diamond C used the same casting as the Diamond D. In the summer of 1901 the early B replaced the automatic and up to serial number 30,000 at least it was used on all Edison machines. The B got its notch for the centering pin in the 17,000 range. The B C and D all had blank weights at first. The C joined in around 25,000, the D around 30,000. The arm appeared on the C sporadically through 1906 even though the new top stamped with reproducer appeared
