[Phono-L] Opera like Phonograph?

2009-03-02 Thread Steven Medved

Hi Al,

Steve the reproducer nut here.

This is the last type of the M, it was made into a trowel like the model O to
reduce wear on the wax four minute records.

There are at least four types of the M I know of.

The first M has a flattened K type weight, I know of one that used to belong to
Aaron Cramer.

The second has the short turn over rod that is unique to the M with the M
stamped on top of the round weight.

The next type has the M stamped underneath with the short stem.

The next has the long stem that is the same as the model O.

The final version of the M has the trowel like the final version of the O.

I will send you a photo of the early L and the info I have on the early L and M
if you are interested. All I have are photos.

Steve

[Phono-L] Opera like Phonograph?

2009-03-02 Thread Steven Medved

Hi Al,

The only M I have ever seen with the copper oxidized weight was the early one
with the flattened K type weight. The highest serial number I have seen is
5595. Unfortunately I am just beginning my research on these, but if you know
of any with the copper oxidized weight I am most interested in photos.

The L had the oxidized weight, but I have never seen an M like that.

The Edison Amberola IA motor/chassis will not fit into a standard Edison
Opera cabinet, since the mainspring barrels are too large and will hit the
bottom of the case. So this cabinet must be a later re-make and the unusual
side
handles bear that out.

I did, but that unit is too different from my Grafanola for me to
really use it.
My point was a little broader, that for all the brainpower here we seem
to have little in the way of how-to documentation.

[Phono-L] Opera like Phonograph?

2009-03-02 Thread Greg Bogantz
Yes, it appears that the 1A motor will fit into the Opera or 1B or III
cabinet. The 1A motor deck is about 1/2 inch longer and about 1/8 inch
deeper, but the three mounting points seems to be in the proper location for
either to mount in the same cabinets. I don't know about the Opera cabinet,
but the console cabinets have spaces large enough around the motor deck to
allow either motor to fit. And the crank locations also seem to be about
the same. To exchange a 1A for an Opera, you would also have to exchange
the horn connector stanchion to change from an inside to outside horn
configuration.

The late production of M and O reproducers were made with the trowel
shaped weights. I think the factory actually re-worked some of the round
weights into the trowel shape. I am working on an M now that clearly has
had the weight cut down - the nickel plating is missing from the cut edges.

[Phono-L] Opera like Phonograph?

2009-03-02 Thread Rich
look at the case on this thing. Now compare it to a real opera case.
See the difference? The handles have already been mentioned. This
looks remarkably like the one that was sold or did not meet the reserve
several years ago. The seller was luvmyedisons and that spelling may
not be spot on either. the guy bought everything that hit the block
and then turned around and tried to sell them at a profit.

[Phono-L] Opera like Phonograph? ( Luv My Edison )

2009-03-03 Thread Herman Wedemire
The person that is being called a Looney Tune:?

?His name was Steve Bovat and although?some may have had issues with him, I
found my dealings with him were quite good. He always spent the time to drop me
an email just to say hello and to wish me well.??I bought several items from
him which are valuable to my collection. He always helped out when I needed a
part that I had difficulty finding elsewhere. Apparently he had health issues
which may contribute to the perception that some people had of him. I have
never met Steve but I did not pass judgement. I know he was aware that negative
comments were made on the forums about him and he expressed that he was very
hurt from the comments as in his mind he was doing good for the phonograph
community. My opinion that he did make some contribution to the hobby and meant
well.
I do not believe Steve is still with us anymore as I have not heard from him
for a few years.

Happy collecting.

The person that is being called a Looney Tune:?

?His name was Steve Bovat and although?some may have had issues with him, I
found my dealings with him were quite good. He always spent the time to drop
me an email just to say hello and to wish me well.??I bought several items
from him which are valuable to my collection. He always helped out when I
needed a part that I had difficulty finding elsewhere. Apparently he had
health issues which may contribute to the perception that some people had of
him. I have never met Steve but I did not pass judgement. I know he was
aware that negative comments were made on the forums about him and he
expressed that he was very hurt from the comments as in his mind he was
doing good for the phonograph community. My opinion that he did make some
contribution to the hobby and meant well.
I do not believe Steve is still with us anymore as I have not heard from him
for a few years.

Happy collecting.

The Looney Tune known as luvmyedisons was on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, so I
don't believe this was the same one.
