RE: [PHP] This is getting ridiculous
But if we find a way to filter the list, say, for patterns just like virus checking programs do. That would probably solve a lot of problems. But again, nobody is really in control of the list so that is difficult...besides, hundreds of people use this list. I don't want to go through and block each individual user. That also defeats the purpose of this list. I'm subscribed so that I can keep up on issues people are having. If I have a question, or a comment, I'll throw my $.02 in. If people just go and block everyone else you end up with tons of redundant posts. Blocking the users is not solving the issue... -Original Message- From: Dan Anderson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 20, 2003 1:18 PM To: Curt Zirzow Cc: PHP List Subject: Re: [PHP] This is getting rediculus This is fine an dandy but this problem needs to be resolved. not ignored!!! sarcasm What a brilliant idea! I'll tell you what, you start in the Eastern United States and tell everyone to use something besides Windows and I'll start in the Western United states. We'll meet up somewhere in the Great Plains and shake hands when we've eradicated viruses from America! Next stop: the world! Blocking the users is not solving the issue... Don't just block random users. Create a rule something like: if (sender contains POSTMASTER or MAILER or DAEMON) AND (cc, to, or bcc contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]) DELETE Doing things like this, adding in filters like if subject contains VIRUS and other such things make it very unlikely you will filter good e-mails. If you want to get creative throw in some things to look for headers in the mail body. The point is to block things that 99.9% of these bad bounces would be, but that 0.0001% of users would be. And frankly, anybody who subscribes to the list from [EMAIL PROTECTED] deserves to be blocked for being dumb. :-) Variations on this theme can be used to stop all bounce notifications for e-mails you didn't send. It took me all of 5 minutes to set up similar rules last night and I'm happy to say the only emails I get are people yelling at the people who bounced. :-) -Dan -- PHP General Mailing List (http://www.php.net/) To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php

Second, it would be better if the list owners would do something about it. Sure, I absolutely agree with you. But there are a lot of lists /not/ doing anything about it. So whatever. Don't spend a half hour bitching about the spam -- spend 5 minutes blocking it and be done with it. -Dan -- PHP General Mailing List (http://www.php.net/) To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php

Create a rule something like: who said anything about random users. if (sender contains POSTMASTER or MAILER or DAEMON) AND (cc, to, or bcc contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]) DELETE This is plain outright the wrong way to go about this (besides bcc is never filled out.) Not to mention I will never setup my filters to do ridiculous things like that. Doing things like this, adding in filters like if subject contains VIRUS and other such things make it very unlikely you will filter good e-mails. this is not a virus issue. Eventually there will be 10 returned emails for each posts and that will mean that that there will be around 2000 needless emails being sent around, a day. This is complete nonsense and must be fixed. So because other lists aren't doing it, this one shouldn't also? I wonder, would you jump off a bridge if everyone else was doing it too? 3. I'm not talking about spam sir. I'm talking about the addresses that are subscribed to this mailing list that when sent an email immediately send back some sort of stupid response like our friend [EMAIL PROTECTED] did. Either he's been removed from the list or he's cleaned his inbox so that emails are being accepted again. 4. Also it wastes bandwidth for the list owners and the people subscribed. It just adds bloat and confusion. Here's analogy: When I was little kid I used to go camping with my grandparents about once a year. One of my favorite things to do was gather as many dry leaves as I could carry and dump them on the fire. If I could carry enough leaves, the fire would be completely covered and look like it had been put out. But after waiting a few seconds the fire would consume all the leaves and end up burning a little bigger than before. Instead of throwing as many leaves on the fire as we can we should instead put the fire out with water or sand. The comparison is that your solution does not stop or even lessen the problem, it just masks it. That's not how problems get solved. 1. I can see that you have issues with anger. Have you thought about seeing a therapist? If you see me as angry you're reading wyyy too much into these e-mails. I'm trying to educate... 2. So because other lists aren't doing it, this one shouldn't also? I wonder, would you jump off a bridge if everyone else was doing it too? No. That's a completely unrelated scenario. I have direct control over my actions. I do not, however, have direct control over actions of others -- including the people who create nasty worms to spam people with. My point is sometimes people do things that can't be controlled -- so you should just accept it and get on with life. 3. I'm not talking about spam sir. Well you should be because that was what the original thread was about. Perhaps before jumping into an argument you should read the entire thread. Somebody complained that there are a number of bounced e-mails and e-mails to this list about there being a virus in the attachment. There is a worm going around which hijacks address books of windows users and spams them with the worm and other stuff. It also uses the addresses in teh address book to spam -Dan -- PHP General Mailing List (http://www.php.net/) To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php

I'm getting lots of random 'errors' from the server besides all the other garbage it was talked about. Since there is no way to fix all these maybe the solution is to start a new list (sqlite list runs fine on yahoo) have some volunteer admins and move all traffic there. Unless the majority is willing to put up with what we have now and what might come in the future. Yes, but many ppl (hmm.. That means me I guess) are also VERY annoyed by those mails the thread is about.. I wanna add that I'm completely with Curt on this subject... Someone started this list, and that someone must be admin, right? Let's unsubscribe the ppl who are causing it... If we don't know who is behind it, then let's check when we started recieving those mails and check who joined the list at that time... -- // DvDmanDT MSN: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ray Hunter [EMAIL PROTECTED] skrev i meddelandet news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Can we move this off list...many of us dont have time to mill through this...we are here to help.
