[pinhole-discussion] New Year 2004 postcard swap - curious...

2004-01-08 Thread Marcy Merrill
I,too, have completely enjoyed this latest pinhole swap. I'm curious about
two of the images I received (coincidentally both are from Germany). Bernd
Heinzel's photo "Beast on the beach" looks like something I might have
taken... only better. Bernd, what did you use to take the photo?
Also, Klaus Ahlemeyer's New Zealand landscape ... love the intensity of the
color! Again, what did you use?

Hey! Maybe next time we ought to do a camera swap? The logistics might be a
bit overwhelming though.

Ah oh. I'm "in question." Here's how I printed my swap photos ( and thanks
for asking) :
I exposed 4x5 b&w film ( Ilford HP5) using a large Pintoid (Altoids
container converter to pinhole camera). I printed the image as an 8x10 on
b&w paper (the old fashioned way). I then tinted the print with color dyes,
scanned it and slapped the file onto a cd. I dropped it off at the lab where
they made 100 4x6 color prints. Simple as pie.
I'm truly enjoying the pinhole photos I've received thus far and I look
forward to even more! Thanks, MM

I dropped those prints off at the post office LAST NIGHT! The PO is never

[pinhole-discussion] cutting circles in film + Acupuncture Dog

2003-06-26 Thread Marcy Merrill
Remember, oh way back when, when I was asking questions about cutting
circles from sheet film? Remember? Well, I think I've got it figured out. I
really appreciate all of the input I received from this list. What I ended

worked well. I've got some results posted at

everybody!

George: It depends on the hole and the light available. Those acupuncture
holes take a bit more exposure than one made with a needle. If it's a needle
hole and it's sunny out, maybe four seconds? If it's an acupuncture needle
and it's sunny ... could take a couple of minutes. Indoors can take ten
minutes to a few hours. I usually guess and I'm usually close enough. This
is on HP-5. I came into some Tri-X sheets that are 2 1/4"x 3 1/4"and they
fit perfectly into the average size Altoids container without having to tape
them in. Those sheets of Tri-X are what I used for the Barbie multiples.
I'll post more Pintoid camera info to the today or tomorrow. Thanks for
checking it out! -MM

Costco sells Altoids by the case. I served them at home and brought them to
every party I attended. You'd be surprised how many people appreciate
Altoids. Aside from the tins I'd collected myself, folks sent them to me

collected dragonflies in them. My friends still save them for me, though I

Yup. I loaded them in a changing bag. I wrapped black electrical tape around
them. I taped the film inside with skinny Gaffer's tape. At first I was
using Gaffer's tape to seal the outside of the containers. That got
expensive. I've found electrical tape on sale ... three rolls for a buck. I
made over one hundred Pintoids. I knew that if I had to re-load to make a
shot, I probably wouldn't do it. I'm lazy. I probably used about thirty-some
per day, on an average day. The rear main seal on my Jeep's engine blew out
during the trip. So I had to stop every 45 miles or so to add another quart
of oil ... I photographed what was there (at each stop), photogenic or not.
Until Bismarck, where I dealt with the problem. Bismarck is actually a
really cool town! I never would have stopped there, if I hadn't been in need
of the services of Corwinn some-body-or-other's Jeep dealership. The
Missouri River runs through Bismarck. Still gotta print those shots.
The Pintoid page mentions the next trip, which is to the Alamo. The trip was
planned before these latest events involving terrorism in our country.
Still, I think now that I'll go. Guy, thank-you for your interest.-MM

John; I've been having this problem also. I tried gluing a tripod nut to the
Altoid tins, but it simply broke off the first time I attempted to use it.
I've been using broccoli rubber bands. This is kind of a hassle. I've also
got to figure out a better shutter than black tape, which tends to cause the
Pintoid to move during the process of peeling. Someone suggested those
flexible magnet strips. Tried them. They want to stick to everything but the
camera and, if I attach them to the camera with tape, I end up with the same
problem as if I'd simply used tape. Anyway, I'll figure out some sort of
sliding shutter, or something. Meanwhile, I'm having a great time with the

Hey Jeff: Thanks for the comments. The photos were taken on the Washington

women who were leaving in disgust. They said that they'd just witnessed a
nude photo session on the beach. (Hey! I thought I was the only one with
that idea!) Anyway, they shook their heads as they described the
photographer ... "he said it was for FINE ART...but you should have seen the
equipment he used!" (I immediately swallowed my question, "What were they
using?" because it would have seemed weird under the circumstances.)
"Definitely pornography." they said. Later, we both wondered what the women
would have thought of all of my Altoid containers? It's yucky out today. A
perfect day for Pintoid renovation work.
By the way, I couldn't get your images to load from the hiddenworld.net

many secluded beaches near here. My friend is about 8 months pregnant. The
