RE: [pinhole-discussion] no more multiformat mime messages
You also need to make sure that your reply is always plain text, even if the original message is HTML. Often whole threads of HTML get going because everyone uses their default reply setup.

If you doing things like setting your background to gray, then you are sending your mail as HTML, not plain text. And if your text comes through the mail colored or formatted, you are sending your mail as html, not plain text. It seems that some newer internet users with newer browser/mail packages are sending mail in html without knowing it. Since I was brought up on the internet on the idea that mail should always go as plain text, I don't understand why mail programs would set mail to html as a default, but apparently that's the case with some. So it would be good for all of us to check and make sure that we're sending plain text. Happy New Year all, Katharine Thayer

Thanks for your post, Larry. Not to prolong this discussion, but if anyone is uncertain how to tell if they are sending their messages as plain text, I'll be glad to try to help you figure it out. Just contact me directly at gregg.kemp@p at ???. With some mail programs, it isn't obvious. And no one wants to discourage posting to the list. It is a real pain to scroll through this stuff especially on the digest version. To extend this a bit, not everyone reads email with software that understands HTML, and while it's possible to dig out the text of a message out of the HTML, it's not fun. HTML may look like normal text in some mail readers, but the real message that gets transmitted has all the HTML formatting commands as well as the message. Software that can send HTML usually have some preferences that can be set so that they send plain text only. Please do that. Thanks.

I was about to post a similar request as Ed's. For those of you who are new to the list, please read and follow the list rules. One of these rules is to post plain text only to the list. HTML is for web pages and text is for email. If you doing things like setting your background to gray, then you are sending your mail as HTML, not plain text. If you reply to someone else's posting, and it has a colored background, be sure to send it as plain text rather than just perpetuate the HTML message. You will make a lot of list members happy if you do this. Subject: [pinhole-discussion] no more multiformat mime messages Hi everyone and belated Happy New Year, Sorry to complain but I keep getting a lot of list messages that are in formats other than plain text. The plain text comes first, then is followed by html looking stuff of the same message. It is a real pain to scroll through this stuff especially on the digest version. Can everyone try to send plain text only? And while I am at it can we be a little more prudent in clipping long messages when replying? Some of the same stuff goes round for weeks and must be taking up unnecessary disk space in the archives, etc. A short reference to what you are replying to would slim things down. Anyone for New Years resolution on the above matters?
