Re: [PLUG] a question on "mv" command

Use to be a good 'test' for a Comp Sci class.

Before the class

touch a b c

mkdir d

In the class

mv *

So I emailed FG, a few days later received a reply that basically said
"you have to be kidding, why the heck should we waste our time, btw we

Ebay even with shipping.

Oh .. I was in the 'hood so I dropped in, let's see a as-is Mac cube
thing, said AS-IS $25, a crappy Dell desktop, the ones the sell on CL
for $10 or Goodwill (with their > $750K CEO) for $20-30, price $100
with 1GB memory. How about a USB (not C) cable for $5. PC keyboard
with a missing key for $5. 17" LCD for $80, same model as the one I
got at Goodwill for $20. Old DC-600 tape cartridges marked down to $18
from $25, AS-IS no return.

Sure glad I didn't go out of my way.

Re: [PLUG] Linux job hunting...

2016-11-14 Thread Pete Lancashire
Here's a few of my thoughts

First an experience for a PSU CS graduate. He could not and still can not
write in a language of his choice a program that outputs the string "Hello
World"

I hope this does not reflect the typical graduate and also hope the a
potential hiring company knows.

What are your skills out writhing software that

 - fits in a small code space ?
 - you know how to make code wiggle a voltage on an electrical wire ? As in
make bit 5 of word 123 go low ?
 - and many more like that

Go but a couple of the little < $20 single board computers that run Linux
or Android. Learn to get time to do things that are real world, as in make
an LED light up, or send a TCP/IP based wireless message that some one
caused a PIR sensor to change state (Learn with PIR means).

Oh yea .. we are taking C maybe C++ here.

Why, there is going to be a lot and there is quite a bit now of need for
remote wireless I/O, Not only the scary IOT stuff, but even without that
there is a growing need for sensors and actuators to become smarter and
wireless. Read up on what the manufacturing industry is up to, go find out
how many sensors are in a chemical plant.

Not interested in the real world ? Well that's not me so learn this weeks
latest bloatware programming environment and join the crowd as in get in
line.

[PLUG] Suggestions for a tablet

2016-07-23 Thread Pete Lancashire
Hopefully this is not off topic

I'm looking for a table that

- runs any o/s other then Microsoft, doesn'te even have to be open.

- 9 to 12 inches, don't know what resolution

- reasonable battery life, say 4 hours but not a show stopper.

- can be charged while being used.

- connect to wireless for example the nice PTP signal at my local LuckyLab

- can 'surf' the web with a browser

- can watch most Videos, Youtube for example

- a POP/IMAP client, doesn't really matter which

Optional

- a HTML editor and a means to ftp files up and down.

- a simple line drawing program.

- supports the use of a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

Thats about it.

Re: [PLUG] Survey: what make/model router do you use at home?

2015-12-23 Thread Pete Lancashire
1) what is the make/model of the wifi device that you use in your
house? none is an acceptable answer.

What ever is on the telco provided, it is disabled

 2) about how old is it (rough guess is fine)?

About 3 years old. My old Cisco Speedrunner finally died

 2) is it running firmware from the vendor or have you installed a 3rd
party firmware like DDwrt, OpenWrt or similar?

The telco on no, after the telco 'box', I have a four network port
router running OpenWrt. Cant remember who made the SBC, name
started with S. One of those group buy things.

 3) Do you now or have you ever exhibited any interest in model trains?
(this is to weight your answer heavier for the target demographic)

In the past yes, neighbor had a setup that run from the basement up and
down an incline into the family room upstairs and back. Computer was a
General Automation 16 bit mini.

Re: [PLUG] Print list of folders

2015-12-12 Thread Pete Lancashire
I forgot (still having my morning caffine) I forgot to have find strip off
the starting directory

so onto the printf options, another one with a zillon options

the entity you only want is the 'filename' (I didn't write the man page),
what they really mean
is 'what entity find finds'.

In this case you want to print out '%f' and and newline

so the corrected command is

find /usr -maxdepth 1 -mindepth 1 -type d -printf '%f\n'

oh

> Yet, 'ls -d */' is simpler still for listing all directories in the current
directory.

The problem with this is it adds a trailing slash to the name of the
directory, if one wants to
do something with the output you'll need to get rid of the slash

Re: [PLUG] Print list of folders

2015-12-12 Thread Pete Lancashire
Want: I wish to print a list of directories (but not the files or
subdirectories
contained in the directories)

The short answer

find -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1
-type d

the find program is your friend, but one you will love and hate at the same
time, even I have to still do
a man or info find.

find [] []

Your first requirement 'only directories' is handled by the option -type
, in your case object
type is d for directory

Let use /usr as the starting point

find /usr -type d

This will output all directories under /usr and /usr it self since it is a
directory

Next you only want the directories under your starting point, find calls
this depth, but it is not the
depth option you want (see find can be hard to get to like at times)

the option you want is maxdepth, in your case you want a maximum depth of 1.

find /usr -maxdepth 1 -type d

Note the maxdepth is before the type, I'll leave it up you to find out why

You said only the directories under the one your interested in, so you will
need to use mindepth as well.

so ...

find /usr -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -type d

Hope this is what you are looking for

[PLUG] Time to build a new PC

2015-12-05 Thread Pete Lancashire
It is time for me to build a new PC. I like having to build one, gives me
one of those warm and fuzzy feeling and lets me say to myself I can still
use a screwdriver.

Looking for a main board, Don't do games but maybe in 2016 I will upgrade
to one of the nice high resolution monitors and will want to keep a 2nd
monitor.

I have a smaller scanner that has Firewire (and USB 2 but can not keep up
with the data rate). So at least one PCI-E slot, the old MB I have uses a
PCI card but I dont mind getting a adpater board if I have to.

BTW my two big scanners are SCSI-2 (with SCSI-3 capable interfaces) but I
have a older server PC for them. One maxes out SCSI-2. Someday like to have
a PC for the scanners since the server PC puts out about the same sound
level then when your at PDX getting on board a puddle jumper.

Here is a crappy part, I may want to dual boot. I have some industrial and
control software that only run under Windoz.

Price is an object but not top on the list, a good solid running board is.
I like buying from Newegg but don't have to.

Suggestions ? Success or failure stories ?

They do, and I don't get 'root', its basically use an app they provide, or
if everything fits in PHP then you can upload to your document-root.

I don't mind going with something that starting off with would be overkill.
I hate getting trapped in a corner later on.

[PLUG] What CMS to use ?

2015-07-10 Thread Pete Lancashire
It is time for me to start posting 'stuff' on one of my domains.

Looking for comments good and bad on a CMS to use.

My hosting company provides Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla

Other then must be close to 7 years ago I played around with
Drupal and Joomla. That is about the limit of my experience

Re: [PLUG] gawk: modify field contents

2015-07-08 Thread Pete Lancashire
A couple questions

Floating point numbers without a leading '<' (e.g., ',0.01,,') are written
to the output file and, if there is a blank field immediately following,
insert a zero (0) in that following field.

What are the FP fields ?

If a FP field and the following field is empty for example 123.4,
change this to 123.4,0

Sample 10321000__1981-09-17

The field NH4 is 0.13 and NO2 is empty. This should be translated to 0.13,0

Issue: Not knowing which are the FP fields, one would not know which
following fields need to be changed

Floating point numbers with a leading less-than symbol and space, '< ',
have that stripped off leaving the number in the field. The following blank
field has a one (1) inserted.

same sample

The field Co is < space 3 and ceneq1 is empty the translation should be 3,1

See above, need to know which are the FP fields

To make the program generic, floating point numbers with less-than symbols

but no following space, and those with a leading minus sign (-) also have
those symbols stripped off and a 1 inserted in the following field.

ditto

All fields with 'M' and a variable amount of white space have the noise
removed so it's a blank field written to the output file.

If contains a M change the fields to empty

The hardest part it knowing which are the FP fields. If you restrict
yourself to using
regex's it could be done but you would end up with something like

   {3}; {6}, {22}

If I was doing this and had a list of the fields I'd do the RTL process
either in Perl (I've not used python)
where one would have an array of which fields are FP something like
(0,0,0,1,0,0,1,1,0,) where 1 is FP
and then read a line split into an array, loop through each fields if the
index of the 'if fp' array ='s 1 then
with a switch/case (makes it easy to add more logic) do what you want.

Re: [PLUG] Mate vs Gnome Classic with fixes

2015-07-08 Thread Pete Lancashire
Keith

I 200% feel the pain. It seems that Gnome, KDE et.al. have been infected by
the same virus that engulfs all of Redmond Washington.

But I can't really say its origin is from within the halls of Microsoft.

But I can say and believe it is predominantly a disease of American origin.
Some where out of the raised factories of what we call Detroit only in that
is was the epicenter of the American automobile industry

Everyone was brainwashed to believe you had to have something new every
year, be it an new car only because the amount of chrome went from 2 sq
feet to 3 sq feet, or the holes in the side went from 3 to 4 etc etc. Ditto
for appliances,
radios, and TVs

I Europe the consumer would ask very foreign questions like does the change
make it easier to use or does it make it safer (Volvo) or does it last
longer (Mercedes-Benz), or does it clean my clothes better .

Why upgrade to Window 10 from Window 7 .. its new is the only reason, Why
is Gnome 3 better, it has to be its is newer.

-pete sigh .. wonder if one can get CDE for Linux ?

Re: [PLUG] gawk: modify field contents [UPDATE]

2015-07-08 Thread Pete Lancashire
Something to keep in mind, initially don't be afraid to make use of the "|"

cat data | sed | awk | sed | awk | cut | sed | awk

once you get the results you want you can decide if you want to a reduction
into fewer pipes.

another thing many look over is instead of doing ... | sed ''
| sed ' | ...

is ... | sed ';; ...' |

for me if it ends up being more the around 3 or 4 levels deep I use sed -f

I'll toss another in is to watch out for is regex limitations known as BRE
or Basic Regular Expressions in grep and sed, and older or non gnu
variations of awk.

if you really feel adventurous is to replace your use of grep, sed and awk
with perl 'one-liners' but if your havn't ventured into the perl it is
quite a big step.

Re: [PLUG] SD cards that enable wifi

2014-03-10 Thread Pete Lancashire
I have one for my digital camera Wifi PRO X2 from these guys
http://www.eye.fi/

Have not used in a year or so, it is currently in the lost category.

When I got it there was quite a bit of Linux hacking with it, not sure
where things are at now days.

And when I got it there other ones were not available.

As far as the Wi-Fi part, getting the signal out of my camera was 'ok'. By
OK I could get a lock when the camera was about
5 feet away. I think the only thing that
saved the day was the door that covers the SD CARD and Battery was plastic.
vs. metal or nickel
sprayed.

Re: [PLUG] Finding RHCSA jobs

2014-03-05 Thread Pete Lancashire
This should be moved to plug-jobs so this is all I'll say here

www.indeed.com is what I use for broad general searches

if your just getting into the admin world add plug-jobs

There's others places but these will get you started

As far as Temp Agencies and just about any other job outfit (I call the
Pimps) they take a big slice out of what you get paid. Do everything you
can to avoid them

If you see a position from one of them do everything you can to find out
who the job is far ... and .. well this belongs in plug-jobs ...

[PLUG] Mother board with 'lots of PCI'

2013-03-23 Thread Pete Lancashire
Any suggestions for a MB that (still) has more the 4 or 5 PCI connectors ?

Has to be dual bootable, XPSP3+Linux

SATA for at lest 2 disks

Optionally a built in 1 Gbs NIC and Firewire

And a preference for AMD

Other then that does not have to be a screamer, 1 Ghz would be just fine

Use is for one or two PC's for gathering data, NI GPIB, and up to 3 NI
Data acquisition/output cards.

Re: [PLUG] Simple/cheap linux-based 2000ft wireless internet bridge?

2013-02-04 Thread Pete Lancashire
If you can see line of site I'd go with a couple 2400 MHz Loco's I've
done 3 installs
and have no complaints. The only thing I have done is put a
polyethylene cover over
the units.

The only issue I can think of is when a boat goes by. If you put them
10-15 feet up
that should take care of the little pleasure craft. But would only do
that if there is
something else to attract lightning.

[PLUG] why not Ubuntu 12 ?

2012-06-22 Thread Pete Lancashire
I'm setting up a PC for someone who is pretty computer illiterate,
almost all Windoz. The PC will be the focal point for selling online.
Initially EBay and eventually a hosted 'shopping cart'

Input will be a couple camera's, scanner, etc.

Output will be a old LJ5M and over time a thermal label printer.

My Linux background has been 99% Fedora. For me it does what I want,
and over 50% of the time I live in a basic xterm world.

I'm considering Ubuntu 12.04 for this PC and looking for comments
issues etc. I'm not interested in religious or pie-in-the-sky, or
similar thoughs. Instead things like issues with printing UPS shipping
labels.

BTW I've been looking at Zen-Cart .. anyone had a bad experience with it ?

$item2save{'cpu01'}  = IO::File->new("> cpu01.out");
$item2save{'cpu02'}  = IO::File->new("> cpu02.out");
$item2save{'cpu03'}  = IO::File->new("> cpu03.out");
...

print { $item2save{ $itemfound } }

where $itemfound can have the values that match the keys in the
%item2save hash ...

sorry to bug the list

[PLUG] perl question

2012-03-05 Thread Pete Lancashire
my brain this morning is blocked on this one

I have a data file

cpu01 value value value
cpu02 value value value
cpu03 value value value
...
cpu01 value value value
cpu02 value value value
cpu03 value value value
...
cpu01 value value value
cpu02 value value value
cpu03 value value value
...

column 1 can be cpu\d+ and cpu_all

I want to open files for writing, one for each unique value in the first column.
so that if the value f the data in the first column is "cpu01" then
write to the file
with the FH of $cpu01

This has to be simple ...

the test file is a zero length file in /var, the squirt file is HP
code to print four rectangles
high enough to ensure all nozzles are being used. I used something like gimp to
create them. Made the height just enough to where it took two passes

Their width was like 1/10 inch or something like that

Re: [PLUG] Alternative to using split / cat for FTPing large file to remote location?

2011-04-27 Thread Pete Lancashire
Give rsync a try. If you don't want the overhead of SSL I believe you
can still have rsync use the
r commands for the transfer. Can't remember been a long time.

Rsync options can also take care of the file's deletion when
successfully transfered. As a success
check may want to look at the option for rsync to use a checksum vs
just the filesize.

A question tho' does each file have a unique name ? If not after 30
seconds a reattempt could
delete the previous file.

without getting into details F6 will give you the command the smit
will run when you hit aka 'doit'
unfortunatly sometimes it is a ksh script. More details can be found
after you run the smitty command
in /smit.log and /smit.transaction (may be transactions.

90% of the systems config is kept in what is called the ODM database.
do a man page on odmget

[PLUG] Linux and VXI

2011-03-16 Thread Pete Lancashire
Before asking world wide

I may soon have a VXI based instrument to play with. Anyone locally
have experience with
running Linux on a VXI CPU, and or know what choices are there for
using Linux vs the dreaded Windoz ?

CPUs that are affordable are x86, 68000, and Sparc based.

The VXI interface/API would be the show stopper.

My interest would be replace having to use GPIB via a GPIB/VXI bridge
with Ethernet.

For those asking what the heck VIX is

PS anyone have a VXI C chassis or CPU they want to sell/trade/dispose ?

Russell,

They may have changed it since you last been there.

What use to be Rue's deli on the East end Lucky has put a door, or put
the door back.
There's a sign over the door saying the room can be reserved, can't
remember the details.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=5520+N+Concord+Ave,+Portland,+OR+97217&sll=43.65477,-79.385061&sspn=0.038874,0.06566&g=46+Howland+Ave,+Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=5520+N+Concord+Ave,+Portland,+Multnomah,+Oregon+97217&ll=45.562674,-122.68483&spn=0.002351,0.004104&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=45.562677,-122.684968&panoid=XMWKTXbLvItASoPVxYmXcw&cbp=12,201.18,,0,5

Still show's it being the Rue restaurant , but the room is the East
1/3 of the building. The place when built
was originally three businesses.

As to being noisy, I do agree there.

I'll raise that to 4/5ths. I am soon going to convert one of friends
M$ boxs to Linux.
I am considering both Fedora and or Ubuntu. Fedora because I have been using
RH since their 5.1. I dont want to get into any religious wars please.
Ubuntu since
my friend is new to Linux and it is the current 'hot new thing'.

Where I work we use RHEL for various reasons, so I use CentOS for testing and
Q/A.

Anyway .. welcome to the family .. at least you have a choice !
