Feh! I just removed the clock from the panel since it's both the wrong
format and unnecessary and because the panel is hidden until needed so I've
not used it for checking the time anyway. :-)

[PLUG] 2021 Speakers Wanted

2021-01-27 Thread Michael Dexter

Hello all,

A previous speaker has reached out with two topics but they prefer
target the March meeting/call/thing.

I will be giving a talk on https://github.com/michaeldexter/occambsd the
day before the First Thursday PLUG slot and statistically, you do not
want to hear this talk. That said, who has a talk they would like to
present? A series of short UnPLUG talks is also appropriate.

For me, 2020 has been the pseudo-sabbatical I have always hoped for and
I shipped two software projects on Friday, both of which were 15+ years
in the making. I hope the same is true for you!

All the best,

I've spent this isolation in working on an art project, using perl and
imagemagick. Would that make a good talk?

[PLUG] Testing Zoom-linux

2021-01-27 Thread Rich Shepard

I'll be presenting at a Zoom meeting in a couple of months and want to
ensure that my webcam and it's microphone (or an external mic) work well. I
know that pavucontrol recognizes the camera and external mic (I assume the
webcam mic, too, but haven't looked for it on pavucontrols input tab).

Are there ways I can run tests here to ensure it all works properly?

TIA,

It'll show you your video, so that'll prove that your camera is working.
The microphone is harder. You can change it and test it, and see the bars
moving to prove that it's getting input. But I haven't found a way to play
back the sound to make sure that it's not garbled.

If you want to do a full test, log in to the same meeting twice. I have
done this via two different browser tabs.
I have never had luck being able to test audio from the zoom test call,
even when I know the mic works.

When I test the mic with pavucontrol I can see the visual 'vu' bar moving so
I know the mic's working.

When I record video tutorials (using vokoscreenNG) I use the webcam and
external mic. When I play back what I've recorded the output goes to the
external speakers.

For Jitsi I've used a headset. Would that be appropriate for a Zoom
presentation to a group or should I use the computer speakers?

Thanks,

The only way I've been able to know that audio is working is to log in
to the meeting on a second machine. There I can hear myself speaking on
the other machine, albeit with a delay. It's enough to verify the mic on
the first machine is working. It also helps confirm the video is doing
what it's supposed to be doing when sharing a screen.

Jason,

I might try that. The installed zoom-linux is a stand-alone application
(which is updated weekly for some reason), not a web app.

I'm kind of surprised as security conscious as this group is, that anyone
would use Zoom. Especially when there are so many better platforms (Free
Conference Call, Ring Central, etc.) available.

We don't all have a choice. At my work, we use zoom and teams, neither of
which I would use if it were my choice.

Michael,

When a group sets up a meeting I think it's obligitory that they use Zoom
because a) they know about it, b) _everyone_ uses Zoom, and c) they're not
especially technically sharp but they know a few platforms.

Interesting that you mention Ring Central. This same organization for whom
I'll be presenting used Ring Central for one of their big conferences. I was
not able to fully join using my Slackware desktop with either firefox or
chromium. I ended up driving to their office in Wilsonville and used one of
their Windose laptops.

I just connected to zoom test using my mpow headset and Logitech C925e webcam.
Because it's reached using a web browser I had to direct it to
/usr/bin/zoom-linux where it opened that window over the firefox page. I saw
myself on screen and heard my voice in the headphones.

So now I know that this combination works.

If you think that RingCentral is better than Zoom - you should know that
RingCental uses Zoom. It is not that difficult to figure it out.
