I've started using Namecheap.com and they seem better than GoDaddy.
Domains are about $10/year, they include privacy options for free, and I
think they also provide free DNS but I didn't bother with that. Their
low end SSL certs are the cheapest I've found.

There's also Name.com, which I intend to try out when a domain is up for
renewal.

I've set up plenty of Xen virtual machines with multiple, bridged
interfaces, and everything, including dhcp worked fine.

In order to answer your question, though, you need to provide more
information. What are the subnets on each interface? Is there a DHCP
server running on that subnet? What do you mean when you say it refuses
to work? You can't ping anything on that subnet (like the gateway)? Is
iptables on your virtual machine blocking things?

Xen with multiple bridges

2011-04-30 Thread Jessie Adan Morris
Hello all,

Firstly, thanks for all the reccomendations for finding good,
cheap hardware! I ended up purchasing a Dell PowerEdge 1950.

Secondly, I have Xen installed on a Debian Squeeze server and a
VM set up and configured, and everything is looking good. The
one last thing I wish to do is set up multiple bridges.

I have one private interface on eth0 on Dom0 and one public on
eth1. I have changed the line '(network-script network-bridge)'
to '(network-script network-bridge-custom)' in my xend-
config.sxp.

The file /etc/xen/scripts/network-bridge-custom is as follows:

#!/bin/sh
dir=$(dirname "$0")
"$dir/network-bridge" "$@" vifnum=0 netdev=eth0 bridge=eth0
"$dir/network-bridge" "$@" vifnum=1 netdev=eth1 bridge=eth1

brctl show lists the following:

bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
eth08000.0019b9efaf65 no peth0

tap1.0

vif1.0

vif2.0
eth18000.0019b9efaf67 no peth1

tap1.1

vif1.1

vif2.1

The vif portion of my VM configuration file is as follows:

vif = [
'ip=192.168.1.8,mac=00:16:3E:6D:FE:14,bridge=eth0',
'mac=00:16:3E:6E:FA:15,bridge=eth1',
]

The problem I am having is that eth1 on DomU won't get an IP via
DHCP and when I set the ip manually it still refuses to work.

What did I do wrong?

I use name.com for domain registration and slicehost for DNS/web hosting. I
LOVE name.com's domain search tools. You put in your phrase as a search term
and it will come back with your phrase and about a hundred different TLDs for
you to choose from. They'll also let you use their beta search tools that index
twitter, and/or let you find names dealing with a certain geographic area.

The only thing they've tried to sell me so far was free google apps. and even
then it's passive.

Unfortunately it looks like you are stuck with 1and1 until the domains have
been registered for 60 days. That is an ICANN policy.

Sorry should have been more clear.
I only wanted the domain.
The webhosting was a freebie with the domain and i only cared about it in the
it wanted to rapidly get a file up that google wants to see to verify domain
ownership.
Not being able to edit html is ridiculous.

Top posting because my nook doesnt give me the option not to.

I have been using IXWebhosting for five or six years and have been very
happy. You can do just about anything and use any software you like. Their
"website" builder software isn't very good but you can use any third party
builder and of course you can run any CMS of your choice.

Domain registration is free with a plan. http://www.ixwebhosting.com and
they don't try hard to up-sell.

I had a bad experience with 1&1 a long time ago and have taken them off of
my christmas card list forever.

Twit says hover.Com makes it easy. And, i understand twit.hover.com can
transfer your domain for $10 and you get another year of registration.

Im still with godaddy and, though I hate their rig-a-ma-roll i've learned to
navigate it.

I don't know why you would expect DNS and Web hosting with domain
registration, they are three different things.

They HAVE to let you set the name servers though. Make sure you're setting
the name servers with the registrar, though, not as a dns record.

Also, they won't be able to transfer it away for something like 60 days (
ICANN policy, I am told).

Try to find how to set the nameservers. I will log into my 1&1 account and
see if I can write you some instructions.
What is the domain name so I can check how it is currently setup for you?

Sorry about the crappy formatting, I'm on my phone.

A word to the wise about 1 & 1

2011-04-30 Thread S. Dale Morrey
I'm venting here, so feel free to ignore my rant.
I purchased a domain a couple of nights ago from 1&1 internet.

I went there because domains are on sale for $4.99 for the first year
and frankly money is extremely tight.
After being presented with about 50 different "upgrade" offers, many
of which were so kindly defaulted to "yes", I was finally able to
complete the transaction.

Today, 48hrs later I finally got confirmation that my order had been processed.

The first thing I did was to log in to manage the domain.
I just wanted to add a simple test page, so that google could validate
that I own the domain, all I want to do is get apps for the domain
going.
I tried their website builder, what a POS.

Seriously, this is the worst piece of junk I've ever used, and to top
it off, if you want to do anything other than add a few words to their
templated site, you need to "upgrade" to their website builder plus.
You can't edit anything other than the text and maybe upload a picture
or two without the upgrade. Not the javascript, not the meta tags,
nothing!

Since that wasn't going to work, I decided to try the other suggested
route and add a TXT record to my zone file.
Not only is the zone file not immediately or intuitively available,
the only thing you are allowed to do is point the currently available
fields.
In otherwords you can't add CNAMEs, or TXT records or any other record
than a single A record and an MX record.

That just made me very angry, so I went over to ZoneEdit, which is as
far as I can tell the only remaining free nameserver service and setup
my zone file there.

Then I went back to 1&1 and tried to set my name servers.
Nope, no dice there either. It seemed to accept the change at first,
but not only is it not propagating, I appear to be locked out of the
management tool.

At this point, I'm going to chalk my $4.99 up as a loss and see if I
can get a real registrar to perform a transfer.
My advice for the future is to stay the heck away from none & none,
err excuse me, 1&1.

Any suggestions for a decent registrar?

Steve
