Re: formatted USB to ext4

2023-01-20 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss
I don’t see how any type of format can make any usb stick last any longer than
another type of format. It’s the hardware that eventually breaks down and
causes anyone problems. How good the hardware is built that will help it last,
not really the format.
I have a couple of San disk usb sticks and I’ve had them for about 6 years and
another one of a different brand for 8 years. They were formatted with fat32.
But I have also another stick which is started to have problems of reading or
writing to it. I have had to format it several times over the years.
But remember that when applying power to electronics it can cause break down
after a while.

Re: McDonald's unveils first automated location

2022-12-28 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss
The technology has been available for almost a decade and with the use of AI we
will start seeing businesses starting to spend the money on it as a lot of
businesses have openings for jobs but no one seems interested. How businesses
are being run has changed since the pandemic and people are expecting more pay
but businesses are starting to pay less based on the person’s skill for the job.

Re: Epson EcoTank printer

2022-12-28 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss
Well if you got yours running then your doing good. Epson told me themselves
they don’t make drivers now for Linux. The drivers they still have online are
very old and out of date. I took my Epson printer back because I couldn’t get
it to work with my fedora Linux.
I finally went with the newest all-in-one brother printer with wide format. And
works great and they will help anyone running Linux and the drivers are the
most up to date.

Re: Cheap Laptop

2022-10-11 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss
I have a friend that has 5 laptops for sale right now. He removes all data on
it and makes sure everything is running right and installs windows 10 on it. I
bought one and it’s great. I installed Linux on it and runs just fine. It is an
HP probook. He works for the business that gets ready to replace laptops. Mine
is only a little over 2 years old. I can get a list of them he has for sale and
the price for them if you’d like.

Most of those games were dos games and I use to play lots of those games on
freedos. But I was able to get doom and wolfenstein to run on my Linux box. But
most ran on my freedos box.

Re: OT: Linux Laptops

The raspberry pi 4 has the Bluetooth 5.0 and no one has had any complaints. I
just took my laptop to the shop for hardware problems and to replace my HDD in
it. But I like what I see on Linuxforlaptops and may look more into it.

If your worried about SSD's failing or having problems, then stick with the HDD

and very fast too.

Re: Kernel Panic

Well I have seen on the market a new board that uses DDR 5 memory and advanced
tech on the board with multiple M.2 slots and then some. I think it have a
video connector as well. I moved on from looking at it because it was to
expensive for me. It was over $600 and that is without the cpu or memory. I do
remember it can use the AMD thread ripper. It's a beast.

I have been following this thread and I once had the same problem and found out
it was a hardware issue.
If you are still using the regular HDD then the hardware that read and writes
to the HDD is failing and needs to be replaced.
I use to have some new HDD and found some to have defects on the read and write
hardware.

newer wide screen monitor

2022-04-11 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss
I am wondering if anyone has tried those new very wide screen monitors with
Linux.
I am thinking about one of those monitors if they work with Linux. With all the
new drivers and technology being put into the kernel and I thought I would ask
if anyone got one running under Linux.

That's the magic words. "in a few years"
Right now they are more concerned about normal users using 5G. Their probably
not thinking about server usage as they are still expanding 5G just to get the
users using it and servers will be finally accommodated after a few years.

Re: Raspberry Pi DHCP & Pihole

2022-03-26 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss
I read an article earlier this month on software bugs and it had mention
a bug in dhcp and that they were trying to fix it.

Not sure if it might be related to your problem. I wish I kept the
article to pass on to others but I didn't.

Sorry about that.

On 3/26/22 12:04, AZ Pete via PLUG-discuss wrote:

All,
I ran into an interesting bug that I thought I'd share here. I set up
one of my Raspberry Pi computers as a Pi-hole and also configured it
to act as my DHCP server.
After the Pi was acting as a my DHCP router I noticed hundreds of log
entries in the pihole.log file.

The Pi was being flooded with these kind of requests:

10:17:10 dnsmasq-dhcp[20546]: DHCPINFORM(eth0) 192.168.1.41
dc:a6:32:65:89:d9
10:17:10 dnsmasq-dhcp[20546]: DHCPACK(eth0) 192.168.1.41
dc:a6:32:65:89:d9 desertpi

Literally dozens of entries per second. As it turns out, I set my
other two PIs to static IP addresses using the GUI interface, which
put this into dhcpcd.conf file:

    interface eth0
    inform 192.168.1.41
    static routers=192.168.1.1
    static domain_name_servers=192.168.1.1

When I changed it to this there were no more log entries as listed
above (i.e. changed 'inform' to 'static')

    interface eth0
    static ip_address=192.168.1.41/24
    static routers=192.168.1.1
    static domain_name_servers=192.168.1.1

As it turns out there is a bug in dhcp that causes INFORM messages to
flood the router. Since my Netgear router acted as the dhcp server
previously, I never saw these entries (the netgear log must not
display them). But, I had always wondered why my PI's network LED was
always blinking so much

I could only find two article discussing this:
https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/116121/huge-syslog-filled-with-dhcpcd-lines
https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=265516

My take away: Don't use the GUI to configure things. :)

Hope this helps someone...
Thanks,
Peter

I moved to Windows about 6 years ago for business reasons.  Those

on Win or MAC.  So I am thinking of running that on a Win laptop I
have and it will be isolated for the most part.

I'm thinking it is time to move back to Linux for my laptop.

I think we need to open a discussion on this cyber war.

Thoughts?

I'm looking at using the U.S. robotics fax modem but unsure if the

Anyone out they have any suggestions or advise how I should setup

low income and don't have much money for the month. I once used

I know how bad the homelessness is getting. Lots of young people that can work
or bettering themselves won't look for work or better themselves because they
think they can bum more money from drivers at intersection that what you can
make at a job. Lots of those young people are becoming destructive towards
other people property like it's a big thrill to them and at most bus stops it's
getting dangerous just trying to go past a bus stop when in a wheelchair. I'm
in a wheelchair and have to go past those stops just to go to the store..I also
see elderly people living on the streets because their rents were jacked up to
force them out so Landlords can fix them up to have high paying tenants.
Phoenix doesn't have rent control and there is a big shortage in fire and
police officers too.

Re: external U.S.robotics fax modem

2022-03-10 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss
Well, you know how insurances are. They want to mail me the documents or forms
yet they know my email address and doesn't want to send it by email. They have
the capability to send me a type of file that would allow me to fill out and
sign my name via computer but they won't do that. Plus paperwork from my
wheelchair place about repairs. Also from doctors and appointments.
Just once someone from my insurance put a letter into my email and sent it to
me instead of sending it by mail.
With all the technology out there they will want to use fax machines because
they are more secure when sending documents they say. A PDF file is an
encrypted file and can't be seen for info while in route. But you can't tell
them nothing.
I know that there is eFax, fax to email, or email to fax.
I'm just getting a little pissed that some of the mail my insurance sends me
doesn't get to me and lately the mail at times is a little scary wondering if
it will get to me or not. So if I want to get my documents from them I will get
a fax machine until they smarten up and start using the new technology that is
available.
I honestly can't afford to pay the online fax service as I'm very low income.
All my documents and stuff I get in the mail is scanned into the storage
computer so I can pull it up when necessary when I happen to be talking to them
on the phone.
I know all the technology that's out there as I look forward to the new stuff
that comes out. But insurances and other businesses are getting a little behind
the 8 ball.

external U.S.robotics fax modem

2022-03-10 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss
I'm looking to setup my computer for faxes sending and receiving. I'm looking
at using the U.S. robotics fax modem but unsure if the two fax software made
for Linux will support it as I would be using a USB adapter for serial port
connection to the fax modem.
Anyone out they have any suggestions or advise how I should setup my Linux box
for using faxes or what to watch out for type of problems. This fax modem is
the only thing I can think of as I am low income and don't have much money for
the month. I once used such a modem with Linux a couple of decades ago when I
use to run a ham radio gateway back in Maine. But I used a script for the fax
modem to make the connection. So it will run with Linux.

But it's not accessible to the hearing impaired. I had mentioned to gnome on

proprietary and gnome feels they can not put it into gnome.
I don't understand that since it's a standard thing worldwide. So how can it be
proprietary.

Re: Zoom Conferencing

2020-06-27 Thread Harold Hartley via PLUG-discuss

I've always said I would never use zoom for security reasons.

But I read an article that a Chinese American was on zoom and wanted to
hold a candle vigil for those lost at tennamen square and ended up being
locked out of zoom.

The reason was is any user using zoom has to follow Chinese local laws
since zoom is owned by the Chinese. So any info used on zoom is
collected by the Chinese because its going through the great firewall in
China.

On 6/27/20 12:30 PM, Michael Butash via PLUG-discuss wrote:
So, until a few months ago, I've been a fan of zoom, great linux
support.  Well, good enough at least for full bi-directional sharing
and remote control.

With covid, their various faux pas in relation to security, etc, it's
gotten rocky enough I am at the point I need to switch.

Problem 1) I cannot log into my account.  I go to any web login for
them, and it gives me a username, password prompt, ok - then a
recaptcha.  But the recaptcha never shows up...  I simply cannot
login, it tells me I didn't fill out the recaptcha.  But again I don't
see a fscking recaptcha on the site despite how ever much scripting I
let in.  It simply doesn't seem to work...  Insert aggro here.

Curious if anyone else has seen this, as this is linux, windoze,
android, or ios I've tested.

Problem 2) I cannot log in to update my payment info to use it pretty
soon.  I'm like a month over due with a cc expired, and I still cannot
log in to update my payment info.  This began 2 months ago, and about
every 2 weeks I get a support update to say that due to covid19,
they're over worked with _no_other_response_ within 2 months.  Whoever
runs their support org should be fired.  I tried to call a human with
the weekend when I have some time, no weekend support, even for
revenue generating events.  Hmm.

I have other annoyances, but the fact that I can't even pay them if I
wanted to is a disastrous mess that tells me I should run in another
direction.

Problem 3) Anything better folks have found lately?  I have cash in
hand, I just need a not-crappy company.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, they'd certainly be sending whatever information they find as a

because it is normal web traffic.

There's also html5 gathering info.

When you say "close up ports", do you mean make sure there's no
executable listening at that port, firewalling that port so nothing
can

come in or out, or something else?

That really gives a lot to think about at how many other sites are doing
the same thing. But I close up ports that doesn't need to be open in

open that can leave a system open for attacks.

On 5/24/20 8:15 PM, Michael Butash via PLUG-discuss wrote:

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/ebay-port-scans-visitors-computers-for-remote-access-programs/

This was a bit disturbing to read today.  Ebay injects a few
javascript connections back to your requesting system, measures a
basic socket connection, telling them if the port is open or not,
amounting to effectively a local host port scan for specified ports,
behind a firewall, from a web page you visited.  They are doing this
looking for remote admin applications in fact, rdp, vnc, teamviewer,
many others.  Hmm.

So any public website can query any port from visiting a web page, and
possibly interact with any sort of local or other api on my system?

I wouldn't think Javascript would be allowed to chain off a host like
that, or at least have protections from certain abuse.  I suppose it's
valid if linking to another site, but JS/Browsers allowing local
random port use like this, seems ebay is probably not the only ones to
abuse this in certain ways.  I know you can do some interesting things
with websockets, seems chaining  via same methods to remote interact
would be trivial.

This is pretty devious actually, I'm both a bit scared for ebay, not
to mention all the other sites I "trust", let alone the ones I don't.
Everyone else that just allows pervasively javascript is just hozed.
Which is standard for everyone since javascript existed.

I use noscript pervasively, and whitelist only valid sites.  Ebay is a
valid site, didn't think I had to protect myself, but how would you
protect against this?  Curious also the take from web dev's on this,
other than thanks for the tip.  :)

Re: video conferencing last night

I will not use zoom with all the privacy and security problems it's having.

On 4/8/20 4:52 PM, der.hans via PLUG-discuss wrote:

moin moin,

it did not go well

We were chatting in jitsi prior to starting, but once I started the
meeting I could no longer hear others.

We moved to bluejeans and a couple of us were not able to connect.

Afterwards I tested zoom with Mac. Had some issues there as well. Sound
kept getting reset. Perhaps that's what was happening with jitsi. As I
wasn't presenting in zoom, we took time to get my client reset.

I haven't had that type of problem with either jitsi or zoom in the past.
Perhaps it was something I was doing last night.

In testing zoom, I discovered that attendees have to present a name and
email address. Neither have to be accurate and the domain doesn't need to
exist.

We were able to test making me a host, giving attendees the mic and
taking
it away. We're up for more testing tonight if anyone wants to get
familiar

with the host tools. Not too complicated, but it some unexpected places.

zoom requires an app or browser plugin. You can't just use a browser
as we

can with jitsi and BigBlueButton.

We can configure zoom to not allowing anyone into the conference until
the

host shows up to avoid a Slap Shot style pre-game. (diable Join by host)

We can also put attendees in their own waiting rooms until a host places
them in the conference. (enable Waiting room)

Mac also pointed out that zoom can live stream to YouTube. We can also do
that with jitsi. We could then setup the video conferencing for only
speakers and moderators and everyone else views via YouTube. We then take
questions via IRC or other mechanism. I believe we can do a hidden
YouTube

broadcast that goes away after the meeting. We could use Brian's account
for that or setup a new account.

Let me know if you'd like to help with testing tonight.

ciao,

der.hans
