Thousands of cache files clutter ...

How crucial are the thousands of cache

Is there any risk in deleting all this clutter?

What is the command syntax to selectively delete
files between certain dates and/or all those

Re: Does anyone use ventoy ?

2024-06-21 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Thanks Rusty ... Your comments are very helpful!

To clarify Linux Mint got installed on
one of the two "new" (used) thinkpads
that I just bought (for $150/each)
Both had win-10 installed.

Mint was installed on the t470 and
the t480 still has windows running
with Ventoy downloaded, but not working.

I will try hitting F1 to see if I can
get to a boot prompt.

In the past I was a just a little
bit more competent, but at age 84
I have lost more cognitive acuity

First, let me try to straighten out my confusion.
You say someone installed Linux Mint on your laptop,

So I'm a bit confused.

In any case, I've used T470 laptops, and you
should turn it on and IMMEDIATELY start hitting
F1 as fast as you can until it either beeps once
or actually gets into the BIOS.  From there you
should be able to set the boot device. (If F1
doesn't work (after trying multiple times!),
try 'enter', THEN F1 once it says something).

I found this verified by searching using DuckDuckGo 'lenovo t470 enter

Does anyone use ventoy ?

2024-06-21 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Does anyone on the PLUG list
have experience using Ventoy?

A friend used his Ventoy USB flash
stick to install Linux Mint on a
used thinkpad t470 that I purchased.

But I then discovered that the newer
Linux Mint version that he installed
does not have many KDE capabilties
that I have always had on my older
thinkpad laptops.

So I downloaded Ventoy from
https://ventoy.net ... hoping to
install kubuntu to get those valuable
KDE capabilities that I need.

When I tried to install Ventoy, the
 system said: "Congratulations! Ventoy
has been successfully installed to the
device" ... However, the USB is blank.

So, I purchased a Ventoy USB from ebay:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/364756232958

But it came with no instructions, and
I cannot figure out how to get it to
boot on the used thinkpad t480 that I
purchased with win-10 installed.

I use Linux exclusively and have zero
experience with windblows.

PLUG Friends ...

I need help and I will be glad to pay

I have four (4) Thinkpads with these
old versions of Linux Mint installed:

#1 T420 linux Mint version 18.1 Serena
#2 T430 linux Mint version 18.1 Serena
#3 T460 Linux Mint version 20.1 Ulyssa
#4 T530 Linux Mint version 19.1 Tessa

#1 is my primary computer and the only
one on which (almost) everything works
the way I want it to work. But the OS
is now too old so it cannot be updated.

Every week, I back up all of my data to
the other three, but each of them have
various deficiencies; including, I cannot
get 4 virtual desktops to work with unique
screen backgrounds on each desktop.

I am considering replacing my old Thinkpads
with T460's or T470's or T480's like these:

Which would you recommend, and would KDE
be better to install than Linux Mint?

PLUG Friends ... Need help updating:

#2 T430 linux Mint version is 18.1 Serena
#3 T460 Linux Mint version is 20.1 Ulyssa

has several problems because the OS cannot
be updated.

Every week, I back up all of my data to
the other three (3) and each of them have
various deficiencies and need to be updated.

For more than a year, I tried to get #3 to
work in all respects as well as #1, but I
was unable to get four (4) virtual desktops
to work with unique screen backgrounds on
each one.

Now, #3 has developed problems because so many
things that had been working fine, no longer
work after I was coerced to do the latest update.

Among the problems, I got an error message that
said there was some defective program somewhere
on the system, and it said I should use some
program to find which program was defective,
but I cannot find how to do that.

I would be willing to pay someone (hopefully
someone in the East Valley) to help me get this
mess cleaned up and get all of my old Thinkpads
working the way they once did before blank blank
updates screwed up everything.

that might not be your problem. (Also, I'm running Debian, not Kubuntu.)

Re: Windoze licenses, "Bring us your Poor" edition

Michael wrote:
*"Second, I tend to think these are more than likely just sold dirt cheap
via 3rd world countries where Microsoft will take what it can get, even
pennies ..."*

Exactly.

Going from distant memory here, so don't quote me, but, to determine the
optimal price that they should charge for a product, one of the variables
that companies need to consider is the "elasticity of demand" for that
product. That is a function of many things, including how essential the
item is, the wealth of the target market, the availability of substitute
products, etc. Everything else being equal, to optimize revenue, companies
can charge more for a product with a low elasticity of demand.

The elasticity of demand varies around the globe. In a rich country, the
elasticity of a given product is low (people are less price-sensitive), so
the optimal price is higher. This is consistent with our intuition.

In a poor country, the elasticity is higher, so the optimal price is
lower. So, to maximize revenue that they can raise from poorer countries,
it sounds like M$ charges less for 'Doze. Again, perfectly consistent with
our intuition.

And it's a win-win, because everyone benefits: M$ makes more more money
(unfortunately IMHO, but who can blame them?), and the consumers in the
poorer countries can afford to buy the product due to its lower price.

But that strategy breaks down if consumers exploit this difference in
price, by consumers in poor countries buying low, and then selling high to
other consumers in rich countries. If it happens on a large scale, this
prevents the company from being able to exploit that difference in
elasticity.

Incidentally, this is perfectly analogous to the pharmaceutical market.
For example, drugs are sold much more cheaply in Mexico, so many Americans
drive down there to get their prescription drugs much, much more cheaply.

Clearly, big pharma hates that, and so they sponsor legislation to ban the
import of the very drugs they exported. Of course, they don't say that
they are doing that so that they can maximize revenue. They claim that the
quality of the imported drugs cannot be guaranteed.

On a personal note, I have no problem with companies maximizing their
revenue, even companies that I detest such as M$. They produce a product
that, unfortunately, many people want. And I have no problem with
consumers re-selling a product that they own and have legitimately
purchased, to take advantage of the price difference (arbitrage). What I
DO have a problem with is the state interfering with the freedom of people
to buy or sell their own property. Doing so actually represents a state
subsidy to these corporations, paid for by taxpayers.

my latest install, but once I found it at

went smoothly.

Now, I need to create a launcher icon on the
panel. How can I do that?

Second issue, when I search Synaptic for a
program like wine to install, and it lists
many dozens of options; how can one capture
and download the list of optins that displays?
CTRL A does not work for that.

Third question: Where can one find a list of
all programs installed from Synaptic (or apt get)
and the dates of last installation for each?

Thanks again for your help!!

Thank you Brian ... plus a question ...

2022-11-01 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Thank you Brian for solving the issue of missing
PLUG email messages. All is well now.

Linux Mint on Thinkpad laptop used to run fine
24/7 with the lid closed as I use an external
monitor, keyboard, and mouse. But recently
something changed (and I don't know what) but
now, I have to have the lid up for it to work.

What settings can I change to get it to work
again with the lid closed?

Also, I have another Thinkpad running Linux Mint
onto which I rsync backup all of my files; and
I'd like to be able to do that to that second
device without having to lift the lid and sign
in in order to do my backups.

Thanks PLUG friends. ~Joe

Why "no such file" error ??

2022-10-12 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Recently I purchased a used Thinkpad T460 and I did
a fresh install of Linux Mint 20.1 that works ... except:

I also installed a "C" program called 'readin' that I have
used successfully for more than 30 years on several Linux
installs; but it does not work on on this Mint 20 install.

Instead, this error appears:
"/home/joe/bin/readin: No such file or directory"

That is weird because 'readin' is actually present
in my directory: /home/joe/bin

I have uploaded copies of the applicable files here:
*** https://vsiq.com/data/count/ *** In one of the
files named: why-no-such.pdf I have tried to explain
and demo the problem.

Someone suggested replacing 'readin' with "read -n1"
and that works in the small "count" example ...
however, it does not work in most of the other important
shell script applications in which I need 'readin' to work.

So the question remains, why that error message appears
when the named file is actually present in /home/joe/bin?

"No such file or directory" error message ???

2022-09-26 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Just did a fresh install of Mint 20.1 on one of my
thinkpads and this is the 2nd of some issues to resolve:

On my other computer, I have a small c program
called "readin" that works like a "hot-key" to select
options in an html menu called ZIP with a keystroke.

This program has been working successfully on
several of my computers for many years; however
when copied on to the new Mint 20.1 install, and
invoked, it does not work.

Instead, when executed, I see an endless stream of
the following four (4) lines repeating, and I have
kill the window to stop the endless repeating:

ZIP temp >>> /home/joe/bin/j: line 29: /home/joe/bin/readin:
No such file or directory
Basic ZIP options are:
ead ail rite rint uit for more options

The utility "readin" actually is in: /home/joe/bin/readin
So why does the computer keep saying "No such file or directory"

I wonder if the problem has something to do with .bashrc

Re: Proprietary Subscription Software: was Photoshop

2022-08-30 Thread Joe Neglia via PLUG-discuss
Good to see another Grandview user here! I originally used PC-Outline that
was included with WordStar all those years ago, but later found Grandview
was an upgraded version. I run it now under DosBox. (WordStar, too, when
I really need to write seriously.) I'm really surprised that there is
still no open source outlining program similar to Grandview.

*Thank goodness* Linux can run those old proprietary programs.

I would rather have a bag of mosquitoes tied around my head than subscribe
to online proprietary software. No way I'm going to be chained to a

Seeking recommendations from the Plug brain trust:

2022-04-08 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Dear Plug friends ...

After using older versions of Linux Mint for many years,
I now need to "build' a new system. Because, what I have
relied on, and what has worked perfectly for many years is
now causing some problems.

So, I am seeking your recommendations for system choices.

I quit using hardware "boxes" years ago and switched to
using Thinkpad laptops exclusively; all running different
versions of Linux Mint: two T-420s, two T430s, one T530.
All are kept running 24/7 (all but one in sleep mode) and
none of them have ever "failed" or had a major problem,
until now.

Thinkpads seem to be amazingly reliable.

I work mostly on one of the T-420s with an external monitor,
keyboard, and mouse ... and I rsync backup all of my data
to each of four other Thinkpads weekly.

However, I have never been able to get any of my backup Thinkpads
to work as completely as that one old-reliable T420 with Linux
Mint 17.2 based on Ubuntu 14:4 ... which is no longer supported.

So, I am now considering purchasing a refurbished T460 ...
but I am open to consider other models. And, I need to decide
which version of Linux Mint (or what alternative distro) to use.

Also, I am no longer inclined to try to do the installation
myself because I remember almost always hitting obstacles
when trying to complete a new installation, and having
difficulty getting everything that I need to work correctly.

So, I hope that I can "hire" one of my Plug friends to install
whatever y'all recommend as the best version of Linux Mint (or
some alternative) and help me get everything that I need working.

In addition to what is included in a standard install, I want it
to start without requiring a password required every time I restart
and without that startup "wallet" nuisance.

The apps that I use most are: kwrite, Libre Office, Google docs
(mostly Writer), Firefox, Chrome, Apache, and Wine with which
I use Paint Shop Pro 7.0. And, I want 4 desktops with different
wallpaper on each one (so I know where I am). That I was only able
to get to work on my one old T-420 with KDE and it is something that
I have been unable to get to work on my four backup Thinkpads.

I will also want all of the other applications that I currently have
on my old T420 installed and working; and I need to know how to extract
list of what all is installed.

Please tell me your recommendations and questions; and contact
me privately if you would be so kind to provide a quote to help
me build a new system. PS: Whatever happened to installfests?
(covid seems to be mostly a non-issue now.)

repo, and it is great! My "keyboard centric" workflow up to now has simply
been to launch programs with Alt-F2. This is waay better. Ever closer to
getting rid of the darn mouse ...

Glad to see some love for LXDE. Been using it for many years now. It is
simple and small. Would be interested in hearing more about your "keyboard
centric workflow" for LXDE. I'm using xmodmap to emulate the beloved and
venerable WordStar keyboard diamond to minimize mouse usage, but am curious
what you are using.

Re: Reliable ISP?

2021-11-18 Thread Joe Neglia via PLUG-discuss
I got a block of 16 static public IP's (I think it's called a CIMD /28 or
some such lingo). The uppermost and lowest addresses in the block have a
special purpose, but that leaves 14 usable static IP's. With the one that
I am using, there are 13 remaining ones, seemingly going to waste.

I thought it would be convenient and simple to have a separate Raspberry Pi
server for each site that I am hosting, each with a different static public
IP. But couldn't figure out how to do that. My online research led
nowhere -- knowledge in this area appears to be scarce. Any advice would
be greatly appreciated!

(Incidentally I discovered that Apache has a feature called Virtual Hosts
that let's you host multiple websites behind one static public IP. Works
great, except that only ONE of the sites hosted that way can have SSL
enabled, due to the way Virtual Hosts works. This is how I'm currently set
up.)

Re: Reliable ISP?

2021-11-14 Thread Joe Neglia via PLUG-discuss
Wow, _thank you_ for that, Michael!
You are correct, it's cable. Cox. Modem is Arris SB6183.
I wrote a BASH script to log the outages by pinging 8.8.8.8 once per
minute. That shows all the outages, but other than that doesn't seem to be
of any help with troubleshooting. Your suggestion to look at the modem's
internal pages yielded tons of info, plus it turns out the modem logs all
the outages, too. Here's what I found regarding signal strength for the
first few channels, upstream and downstream, when the network is up. (I'll
grab these again the next time it goes down -- that would provide more
useful information, I presume):

*Downstream Bonded Channels*
*Channel* *Lock Status* *Modulation* *Channel ID* *Frequency* *Power* *SNR*
*Corrected* *Uncorrectables*
1 Locked QAM256 45 42900 Hz -0.4 dBmV 38.1 dB 38 0
2 Locked QAM256 33 35700 Hz 0.5 dBmV 38.5 dB 2 0
3 Locked QAM256 34 36300 Hz 0.3 dBmV 38.7 dB 0 0
4 Locked QAM256 35 36900 Hz 0.3 dBmV 38.7 dB 1 0
... there are 12 more of these Downstream channels, with similar Power and
SNR numbers.
*Upstream Bonded Channels*
*Channel* *Lock Status* *US Channel Type* *Channel ID* *Symbol Rate*
*Frequency* *Power*
1 Locked ATDMA 1 5120 Ksym/sec 1770 Hz 39.7 dBmV
2 Locked ATDMA 2 5120 Ksym/sec 2410 Hz 39.7 dBmV
3 Locked ATDMA 3 5120 Ksym/sec 3050 Hz 39.7 dBmV
4 Locked ATDMA 4 5120 Ksym/sec 3690 Hz 39.7 dBmV

Seems like an SNR of 38 or 39 dB would be reasonable, but not sure what the
standard is for these systems. Will definitely look into your mtr
suggestion next! Always learning ... Joe

Reliable ISP?

2021-11-14 Thread Joe Neglia via PLUG-discuss
Any recommendations for a reliable ISP?

(Couldn't find any recent discussion in the PLUG archives, so am asking
here.)

I currently have a business account (I'm running a small server on a static
public IP address for my business), but am having a *terrible* time with my
current ISP. Worked *great* for about a year, but have been having daily
outages for about a month now.

Don't even want to say the name for fear of being sued for libel. They were
honest enough to admit it is an "internal issue", and have no ETA on a
fix. "[Their] technicians continue to work to resolve the problem in [my]
neighborhood. Currently, there is no estimated time for when service will
be restored."

I get the feeling they don't have a grasp on the problem, as when I call
their status line they report an outage even when the system is up. When
my connection goes down, a modem reboot sometimes (but not always) gets me
connected again.

Speed is not an issue. But reliability is! Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

OT How to change icon on android phone?

2021-06-15 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

I created a shortcut to a website on my Note 9
Android phone but I cannot find a way to change
the default icon to one that I made.

I have tried a dozen of the "icon changer" apps
in the play store, but none of them work.

Google search results give many step-by-step
how-tos, but none of them work, including:

1. Long-press and hold the app shortcut you'd like to edit.
2. Drag the icon up to Edit.
(This does not work)

3. Swipe up the menu to reveal the list of sources for your icon.

4. Tap My photos.
(This also does not work, because when I try to
upload either a jpg or a png of my custom icon,
it just vanishes.)

5. Navigate to and select your custom icon.

6. Return to the home screen to enjoy your new icon. Source: Android

larger print jobs with images are failing.

I once had someone complaining that her 22 page document was taking a
very long time to print to a network attached printer.   It turned out
that the 22 page document because of some bad formatting and large
embedded images had to be turned into an 800+ meg file in order to be
printed and then that file was having to be sent over a 100Mb
connection which just plain took a few minutes to complete the
transfer of the entire document to the printer, making for a very slow
print.  Since it was a document that would be printed a lot, the fix
was to recreate the document in a way that minimized the actual print
file size.

any of the newer systems to do things that my old

I rely on multiple desktops with different screen

If you fill your physical partition, it really doesn't like it, and
all hell breaks loose, as you see. Boot from a boot cd, clear some

Start with "sudo du -h --max-depth=1", figure out what is filling your
disk, and delete some. Reboot. Usually logs, updates, packages, etc
cruft - kill it all.

When it's sane, move to a more agreeable FS structure, use LVM, I can
fill a disk and stay up, much less impact if/when this occurs.

I break /var and /var/log into separate partitions always, these are
typically what fill and break. Keep them separate with LVM's, much
happier to recover if any one fills up. I normally keep /usr with
debians separate too, but arch installs hate this. Also I keep /home
separate, as I fill this commonly, which breaks anything running in
userland if/when occurring.

Funny, I do this because this is how we installed solaris this way
with slices like +20-some years ago to not blow up, but
over-simplification these days ignores fun facts like these.

Fwd: Why I hate updates ... partially fixed ...

2021-03-13 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Yesterday, I did another update on my Linux Mint 17 system
and today numerous things that previously worked fine
no longer work, including Libre Office.

Before reboot:

After reboot, some things that had quit working,
now work again. Libre office works somewhat.
I tried to reinstall Libre office writer from synaptic
and now I can print a text document, but a document
with an image inserted in it will not print.

Why? A text only document sent to the printer AFTER
this one printed fine, but -2760 is still stuck.

What can I do to get it to print a document stuck?

Yesterday, I did another update on my Linux Mint 17 system

And, I now see that all the space on sda1 is filled
so I have zero space available.

Also, I tried to download a pdf file which should have
gone to sda6 and I got a message "No space available."

What can I do to remedy this nightmare?

I am willing to pay for help if one of my PLUG

2021-03-10 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Thanks Michael and Stephen ...

Got it working again (mostly) although it seems that the last
update I did changed some things and took away some features
and functions. I still have 4 desktops, but each one has the
same background, whereas before I was able to have a different
background on each screen (to keep straight where I was ;)
Really miss that feature.

Other features and functions are also gone.

I hate system updates.

Try to 'cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log' to see if your card died, or updated

occasionally break my whole update and os, ubuntu or arch really.
Last time I upgraded my arch it broke nvidia binary support with too
new a kernel, luckily I never use the nvidia gpu as prime is a
basketcase anyways, so it uses intel normally anyways. Above old

as the gpu fried. Yours might have if video is just dead, but
otherwise seems alive.

If only intel, your software may have just gotten hozed - try a
different user profile if you can get any video out of it.

How to eliminate password prompt after lid up?

2020-10-05 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

On my Linux 19 Cinnamon thinkpad, when I lift the lid, it always
requires a password. How can I eliminate that?

I have tried two proposed solutions that I found from searching,
but the unwanted password prompt is still there.

(1) Open terminal and type "sudo passwd root". It prompts for
a password for the root account. I enter the admin password
then to "Preferences" and "Login Windows" then followed the
prompts but could not find a way to eliminate the password.

Next, I went here:
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=71680

And found this: enable auto login so that you don't need a password
to log in. Go to the Administration menu/Login screen and set up
an auto login for a user. But again, following all the prompts
did not give me the desired solution:

System Settings > Administration > Login Window > Users > Automatic
login >

Username [joe]

What am I doing wrong? How can I eliminate this annoying requirement
to enter a password again every time I shut the lid and open it again?

why executable file 'readin' not found but it is there

2020-10-05 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

In my /home/joe/bin directory, I have hundreds of
shell scripts that I use for various utilities.

Recently, thanks to advice from Matt Graham, I added these
lines to .bashrc which got most of those utilities to work:

export PATH=/home/joe/path:$PATH

However, one of the files in /home/joe/bin is a proprietary
binary file named 'readin' that functions like a "hot key"

It works fine on my other Linux boxes, but since I copied my
entire 'bin' directory onto another Linux machine, I can't
get 'readin' to work on this machine.

In fact, it cannot even be "found" even though it is certainly
there in /home/joe/bin ... but when I type readin at the command
line, I get this message:

joe@drifter:~/bin$ /home/joe/bin/readin
bash: /home/joe/bin/readin: No such file or directory

Hope someone can explain why 'readin' is not found
when it is actually there.

How to set up PATH ??

2020-10-04 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

My backup computer system has this version:
Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa

How can I edit .profile so it will find all
of my shell script utilities in /home/joe/path ??

I tried adding the 4 "set PATH" lines shown below, but it does not work:

# ~/.profile: executed by the command interpreter for login shells.
# This file is not read by bash(1), if ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bash_login
# exists.
# see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files for examples.
# the files are located in the bash-doc package.

# the default umask is set in /etc/profile; for setting the umask
# for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package.
#umask 022

# if running bash
if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then
# include .bashrc if it exists
if [ -f "$HOME/.bashrc" ]; then
. "$HOME/.bashrc"
fi
fi

# set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists
if [ -d "$HOME/bin" ] ; then
PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
fi

=== Also, I cannot find where to add desktops (workspaces)
in this version of linux.

"Re: Contents of PLUG-discuss digest..." Tar and other stuff

2020-09-25 Thread Joe Taylor via PLUG-discuss
I understand needing help and I am not running you down in any way.

When I was a newbie, a long time ago, I learned to read the man page on
commands. I learned a lot of interesting things from reading the page. As
for me I remember much more if I do the work first. Some man pages are
kind of cryptic in nature. Then I would google for what I needed, like:
How to tar a file in unix.

I keep an archive of how2xxx. They are just command lines that I used with
a few notes.
As an example I have a file named how2awk it has examples of how I did it.

Here is an example: of how2foreach

in csh___
#!/bin/csh
set infile = "./main_servers"
foreach abc ( `cat $infile` )
   echo "-"
   echo "$abc"
   rsh $abc 'ls /opt/SUNWexplo'
end

_in bash___
#!/bin/bash
## path to input file
input="lists.txt"

## Let us read a file line-by-line using while loop ##
while IFS= read -r line
do
 printf 'Working on %s file...\n' "$line"
done < "$input"

I worked in csh most of the time so a lot of my examples are for csh, this
one has both csh and bash examples. They work in SUN os 4.4 through
Solaris 10 I have not tried to run the commands in Ubuntu yet but I am sure
it would.

This is just a few things to think about. I have to ask my sone a lot of
questions about how to do things in Linux. Linux is much easier to learn
than Solaris was. You can do a lot of stuff with GUIs but if you want job
security learn to do admin by the command line.

Joe
P.S.
If you keep good notes of what you did and how to do it, you will never
have to rewrite code, just modify what you already have.

Re: After Linux Mint update, numerous problems ...

2020-09-03 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

Thanks Steve. Really appreciate all of the things you
(and others) have suggested and I may just follow your
tip to "wait a couple months" because sometimes things
fix themselves ;) And, I may also try some of the things
that Brian suggested. I did add the browser "slimjet" and
it seems to work well.

Best,

Joe

2009-03 Steve Litt wrote:

If I were in your situation, I'd first try Chromium instead of Chrome,

Chrome/Chromium fixes itself. This stuff happens all the time with
browsers: Several are always broken. What I'd avoid right now is these
extreme package manager maneuvers that might bork a lot of stuff.

Here are some alternatives to Chromium and Firefox:

luakit

netsurf

One other observation. Earlier in the thread you expressed concerns
about speed, number of processes running, and resources in general. You
seem quite proficient at Linux. Maybe it's time you move away from
coddling type distros like Mint, Ubuntu, and to a lesser extent
Debian. If you were to switch to the Void Linux distro
(https://voidlinux.org/), there would be far fewer levels of
abstraction on your machine. If you switch to Void, I think all your
resource problems would go away or at least have obvious root causes.

This isn't to say you wouldn't have other problems with Void. A few
marginal programs aren't packaged in Void: You'd use a Mint VM to run
those. And Void's not going to have the "we work with all hardware"
kind of capability that Mint and Ubuntu have, but if your hardware is
more than a year old, that shouldn't be a problem on any distro.

I've been using Void Linux since early 2015 (switched from Debian in
2014 and Ubuntu 2008-2013) and I still love using Void. You might want
to consider it.

197 additional updates are available with UA Infrastructure ESM.
To see these additional updates run: apt list --upgradable
See https://ubuntu.com/advantage or run: sudo ua status

Then I ran sudo apt list --upgradable
and got the long list of options that one sees when
running sudo apt full-upgrade

But I don't know which of those options I should try to use
or how to use them (in what sequence).

They both do the exact same exact thing, except full upgrade is the
new name for dist upgrade option becuase too many people only did
upgrade because they were afraid that dist-upgrade would actually
upgrade their distribution to the new version... it doesn't.  It just
tells your system to upgrade all the packages, where plain old upgrade
tells the system to only upgrade packages that don't require any
additional packages to installed or uninstalled which can leave
security problems on your system if the update requires additional
packages to be installed.

If you've been doing only upgrade for a really long time; be prepared
for some broken dependencies that wouldn't have happened if you had
done dist-upgrades instead Hopefully apt's dependency calculator
will just take care of it for you and all will be good with the world

done dist-upgrades instead Hopefully apt's dependency calculator
will just take care of it for you and all will be good with the world
again.

cat /etc/lsb-release

Should I uninstall and reinstall it?

Also, ps -ef shows 203 processes running,
even when I do not have anything running.
The list looks really abnormal.

Old Hardware

2020-07-21 Thread Joe Gibbs via PLUG-discuss
Greetings from Peoria,

I am cleaning out the closet (literally) and have some old hardware that
could use proper disposal. Currently I am dropping stuff off at Batteries
Plus into their electronics recycle box. However the current lot still
runs, despite running MS Vista, XP or Windows 10.

Does anyone know of an alternate legit site / location for either
reselling (on the cheap) or donation other than https://azstrut.org/?

Thanks

Re: Password Management Services

2020-05-25 Thread Joe Gibbs via PLUG-discuss
Good evening,

A well timed thread. I recently moved to an iPhone and iPad from a LG G6
Android phone and Samsung tablet. My old password manager (Password Safe @
https://pwsafe.org/) wasn't going to work on the new Mac OS. It appears
that BitWarden might be a good replacement for it.

I am on a little home vacation this week and will give it a try to see how
it works for me. I use a Macbook Pro for work but Window 10 for home
computing. Guess I have all the OS bases covered at this point, except a
pure linux host.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Mint Application Launcher Menu question ...

2020-05-24 Thread Joe Lowder via PLUG-discuss
As you can see in this image link:

https://upquick.com/temp/gdoclink.jpg

On my Linux Mint Application Launcher Menu
there is a link for: "temp - Google Docs"

I don't know how that link got there, but I would like
to know how to add an additional link to open a second
or different google document to this launcher menu.

Also, how can I change what occurs when I click on that
link? For example, when I click on that "temp" link now,
if I have a chrome browser open, that "temp" document opens
as a new tab in that currently open chrome browser. But if
there is no chrome browser open, the "temp" link does not
open at all.

Also, how can I set that link to open in a new chrome window
or perhaps open into a firefox browser tab?

How could I achieve that?

Synaptic question re Firefox

2020-05-24 Thread Joe Lowder via PLUG-discuss
On my Linux Mint system (which is up to date), synaptic
shows Firefox 66.0.3 as the latest version, as shown in
this link image: https://upquick.com/temp/ffversion.jpg

But as you can also see in that link image, when I open
a google document with Firefox, I see the message that says
"This version of Firefox is no longer supported."

So what can I or should I do about that?

Which audio/video formats are best and why?

2020-05-12 Thread Joe Lowder via PLUG-discuss
Please help ...

After searching the 'net for information about
which audio and video formats are best, and why,
I am more confused than ever.

On my system, I came across some old audio files with
the file-name suffix .mid but I could not get those
files to play with vlc, smplayer, amarok, or audacity.

So, I went to several online file conversion sites
trying to find one that would work best to do some
file conversions, and that confused the subject further.

So, I'm hoping that the PLUG brain trust can provide
better information about this.

The only file conversion site that I found that could
deal with the .mid files was: www.zamzar.com

When I converted one of my files, music.mid to mp3,
the file played fine, but it increased the file size
from 6329 to 3163566, which seemed weird? Why so?

--6329 Apr 12 2003 music.mid
---3163566 May 11 19:41 music.mp3
---3362836 May 12 00:28 music.ogg
--37962478 May 12 00:29 music.wav

I also gried to convert the same file to .ogg and to .wav
with the size results seen above. This makes no sense.

Why would such a small source file be blown up to such
huge sizes and all sound the same?

Similar question about video files:
46235648 Jul 18 2018 workshop2.VOB
16811516 Jul 18 2018 workshop2.mkv
51575152 May 12 00:14 workshop2.mp4

Which of these three is a preferable format?
The all seem to look identical (to me) when played.
Why would the conversion from the original VOB to
mkv become so much smaller a file size and why
would the conversion from VOB to mp4 increase the size?

Hope so someone can help me make sense of this.

OT: How to make this simple html menu work?

How can I get the simple html menu
(example code shown below) work to view mp4 videos
from a menu link on my local computer in the same
way that I can view jpg images (and when all the
same files are uploaded as at this link:

Below is the simple code example:

todo list
together
toilet paper
TP wedding dress
Turkey Bacon

But none of the examples below work on my computer. Why?
Splash 1
Splash 2
On the command line this works: vlc
splash.mp4

What would be the simplest code to be able to
just click on a menu link to view an mp4 video?

files. most are 1 to 3 megabyte each.

The most recent are 30 files from April 6, 2020 over
a span of about 10 minutes, but none since then even
though I have been using the one and only program that
I use under .wine and older version of Paint Shop Pro 7
(which works great, by the way)

I tried to view some of the files with several different
image viewers to see what was in them, but no success.

Any suggestions how I might find out what is in any of
those files? and/or if it would be risky to delete all
of those otherwise apparently space-wasting files?

Question re .wine Temp files ...

2020-04-12 Thread Joe Lowder via PLUG-discuss
I just discovered a thousand or so huge .tmp files

Re: Need a Linux expert - partially solved ...

2020-03-12 Thread Joe Lowder
Matt responded (in part):

Thanks Matt! ... You have always been a tremendous help!

Turns out I was able to get 'readin' to work okay
by checking/fixing some permissions and by changing
one reference point a script that relied on 'readin'.

With regard to the other part of my post regarding
the need to hire a Linux expert and c-programmer ...
I've had one response (so far) from my quest to find
someone to help (for hire) with some of my projects.

I've used fiverr with some success for a few small
jobs, but not to get answers to Linux questions.

PLUG has always been a *tremendous* help ...
but I have several unanswered questions from recent
(and past) posts, so I still hope to find someone I can
call (for paid assistance) to get timely answers when
I do have some of those unanswered questions.

Thanks again!

Need to contract hire a Linux expert and c-programmer ...

2020-03-11 Thread Joe Lowder
We all appreciate all of the great help that we get from
all of the very helpful and knowledgable guys on the PLUG
list. Yet, I would also like to hire someone who is a Linux
expert _and_ c-programmer to help me solve some things ...
including creating a custom Linux live flash drive.

One c-programming objective pertains to a small utility
that I have used every day for the past 30+ years. It has
worked flawlessly on a number of different flavor Linux
installs on many dozens of computers.

The utility is called: 'readin' and it works similiarly
to the standard linux or 'c' command 'read' except it acts
instantly instead of requiring the user to press

Today, I found that it did not work when I copied it on
to a new installation of Linux Mint 18.3 on a Lenovo
model 500 laptop, giving me a segmentation core fault.

So, I wonder if the source code perhaps needs to be
re-compiled for this kernel? Or, is there something else
I could try? The current compiled version and the source
code can be downloaded from these links:

http://www.upquick.com/temp/readin
http://www.upquick.com/temp/readin.c

Hope somebody can help or refer me to someone who can
fix this.

How to get Linux Mint to auto start?

2020-03-04 Thread Joe Lowder
On one of my Linux Mint computers, it has auto-start
so no login is required, and it has different wallpaper
backgrounds on different virtual desktops.

But I cannot get either of those features to work on
my Linux Mint 18.3 KDE laptop. Why? And how can I
get these two important features to work?

At the following link, I have combined three screen-shots
to show the current settings in which the login theme
states: "You will be asked to authenticate ... " etc.

http://www.upquick.com/temp/settings.jpg

I am unable to find any way to disable this login so
the computer can automatically open without requiring
entering a password.

And, the only suggestion I can find online at the
link link below does not work because /usr/bin/sddm/
default-display-manager does not have
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf so I cannot

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/381785/how-do-i-enable-auto-login-in-mint-18

What do I need to do to enable an autologin so the system
does not require entering a password every time I open
the laptop?

And what do I need to do to get different wallpapers
on each different virtual desktop to work like it does
on my other Linux Mint computer?

Why does this not work?

2019-12-29 Thread Joe Lowder
For years, I have used bluemail form input for a simple
way to invite comments from visitors to my websites;
but recently discovered that this quit working:

http://www.upquick.com/message/

So, I asked bluehost support for a remedy and they
sent the code sample shown below, which I uploaded
to a test site: upquick.com/message/forminput4.htm
to try to use, but it does not work.

What do I need to change to get this to work?:

How to rsync to a chromebook with linux?

2019-11-28 Thread Joe Lowder
Just purchased the ASUS c423 Chromebook (it is fantastic)
and I was delighted to discover that I could just click on
an icon on the "shelf" (panel) and Linux was quickly
installed automatically (within only a couple minutes).

So, I am really enjoying the discovery process to see
what all I can do now with Linux on this Chromebook
running *simultaneously* with the chrome os.

However, I have not yet been able to find the magic syntax
to rsync files from my current Linux system to this new
Chromebook. When I tap on the Linux icon on the shelf
the Chromebook opens to a black screen with this prompt:

# upquick@penguin: and I found the IP address is 192.168.0.22
so I created a subdirectory titled 'bin' in: home/upquick/
and tried the following in order to try to copy all of my
hundreds of 'bin' shell script utilities to the chromebook:

rsync -avH --progress /home/joe/bin/ upquick@192.168.0.22:/home/upquick/bin/

Regrettably, this did not work, so what do I need to do to
get it to work?
