Re: Does anyone use ventoy ?
Thanks Rusty ... Your comments are very helpful! To clarify Linux Mint got installed on one of the two "new" (used) thinkpads that I just bought (for $150/each) Both had win-10 installed. Mint was installed on the t470 and the t480 still has windows running with Ventoy downloaded, but not working. I will try hitting F1 to see if I can get to a boot prompt. First, let me try to straighten out my confusion. You say someone installed Linux Mint on your laptop, but then you say it boots windows. So I'm a bit confused. In any case, I've used T470 laptops, and you should turn it on and IMMEDIATELY start hitting F1 as fast as you can until it either beeps once or actually gets into the BIOS. From there you should be able to set the boot device. (If F1 doesn't work (after trying multiple times!), try 'enter', THEN F1 once it says something). Does anyone use ventoy ?
Does anyone on the PLUG list have experience using Ventoy? A friend used his Ventoy USB flash stick to install Linux Mint on a used thinkpad t470 that I purchased. But I then discovered that the newer Linux Mint version that he installed does not have many KDE capabilties that I have always had on my older thinkpad laptops. So I downloaded Ventoy from https://ventoy.net ... hoping to install kubuntu to get those valuable KDE capabilities that I need. When I tried to install Ventoy, the system said: "Congratulations! Ventoy has been successfully installed to the device" ... However, the USB is blank. So, I purchased a Ventoy USB from ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/364756232958 But it came with no instructions, and I cannot figure out how to get it to boot on the used thinkpad t480 that I purchased with win-10 installed. Why "no such file" error ??
Recently I purchased a used Thinkpad T460 and I did a fresh install of Linux Mint 20.1 that works ... except: I also installed a "C" program called 'readin' that I have used successfully for more than 30 years on several Linux installs; but it does not work on on this Mint 20 install. Someone suggested replacing 'readin' with "read -n1" and that works in the small "count" example ... however, it does not work in most of the other important shell script applications in which I need 'readin' to work. So the question remains, why that error message appears when the named file is actually present in /home/joe/bin? === --- PLUG-discuss mailing list: PLUG-discuss@lists.phxlinux.org To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: https://lists.phxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss

Seeking recommendations from the Plug brain trust:
Dear Plug friends ... After using older versions of Linux Mint for many years, I now need to "build' a new system. Because, what I have relied on, and what has worked perfectly for many years is now causing some problems. So, I am seeking your recommendations for system choices. I quit using hardware "boxes" years ago and switched to using Thinkpad laptops exclusively; all running different versions of Linux Mint: two T-420s, two T430s, one T530. All are kept running 24/7 (all but one in sleep mode) and none of them have ever "failed" or had a major problem, until now. Thinkpads seem to be amazingly reliable. I work mostly on one of the T-420s with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse ... and I rsync backup all of my data to each of four other Thinkpads weekly. However, I have never been able to get any of my backup Thinkpads to work as completely as that one old-reliable T420 with Linux Mint 17.2 based on Ubuntu 14:4 ... which is no longer supported. So, I am now considering purchasing a refurbished T460 ... but I am open to consider other models. And, I need to decide which version of Linux Mint (or what alternative distro) to use. Also, I am no longer inclined to try to do the installation myself because I remember almost always hitting obstacles when trying to complete a new installation, and having difficulty getting everything that I need to work correctly. So, I hope that I can "hire" one of my Plug friends to install whatever y'all recommend as the best version of Linux Mint (or some alternative) and help me get everything that I need working. In addition to what is included in a standard install, I want it to start without requiring a password required every time I restart and without that startup "wallet" nuisance. The apps that I use most are: kwrite, Libre Office, Google docs (mostly Writer), Firefox, Chrome, Apache, and Wine with which I use Paint Shop Pro 7.0. And, I want 4 desktops with different wallpaper on each one (so I know where I am). That I was only able to get to work on my one old T-420 with KDE and it is something that I have been unable to get to work on my four backup Thinkpads. I will also want all of the other applications that I currently have on my old T420 installed and working; and I need to know how to extract list of what all is installed. Please tell me your recommendations and questions; and contact me privately if you would be so kind to provide a quote to help me build a new system. PS: Whatever happened to installfests? OT How to change icon on android phone?
I created a shortcut to a website on my Note 9 Android phone but I cannot find a way to change the default icon to one that I made. I have tried a dozen of the "icon changer" apps in the play store, but none of them work. Google search results give many step-by-step how-tos, but none of them work, including: 1. Long-press and hold the app shortcut you'd like to edit. 2. Drag the icon up to Edit. (This does not work) 3. Swipe up the menu to reveal the list of sources for your icon. Source: Android Central. 4. Tap My photos. (This also does not work, because when I try to upload either a jpg or a png of my custom icon, it just vanishes.) 5. Navigate to and select your custom icon. 6. Return to the home screen to enjoy your new icon. Source: Android Central. It turned out that the 22 page document because of some bad formatting and large embedded images had to be turned into an 800+ meg file in order to be printed and then that file was having to be sent over a 100Mb connection which just plain took a few minutes to complete the transfer of the entire document to the printer, making for a very slow print. I would still like to "hire" someone to help me build a new system because I am 81 now and I just can't remember how to do everything that I need to do (with my computers mainly). I rsync back up most of my system to 3 other newer Thinkpads about weekly, but I can't get any of the newer systems to do things that my old Mint 17.2 system is able to do. I rely on multiple desktops with different screen backgrounds on each one (so I know where I am ;) but I don't know of any system other than Mint 17 that can do that. I break /var and /var/log into separate partitions always, these are typically what fill and break. Keep them separate with LVM's, much happier to recover if any one fills up. I normally keep /usr with debians separate too, but arch installs hate this. Also I keep /home separate, as I fill this commonly, which breaks anything running in userland if/when occurring. How to eliminate password prompt after lid up?
On my Linux 19 Cinnamon thinkpad, when I lift the lid, it always requires a password. How can I eliminate that? I have tried two proposed solutions that I found from searching, but the unwanted password prompt is still there. (1) Open terminal and type "sudo passwd root". It prompts for a password for the root account. I enter the admin password then to "Preferences" and "Login Windows" then followed the prompts but could not find a way to eliminate the password. Next, I went here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=71680 And found this: enable auto login so that you don't need a password to log in. Go to the Administration menu/Login screen and set up an auto login for a user. But again, following all the prompts did not give me the desired solution: System Settings > Administration > Login Window > Users > Automatic login > Username [joe] What am I doing wrong? why executable file 'readin' not found but it is there
In my /home/joe/bin directory, I have hundreds of shell scripts that I use for various utilities. Recently, thanks to advice from Matt Graham, I added these lines to .bashrc which got most of those utilities to work: export PATH=/home/joe/path:$PATH However, one of the files in /home/joe/bin is a proprietary binary file named 'readin' that functions like a "hot key" It works fine on my other Linux boxes, but since I copied my entire 'bin' directory onto another Linux machine, I can't get 'readin' to work on this machine. In fact, it cannot even be "found" even though it is certainly there in /home/joe/bin ... but when I type readin at the command line, I get this message: joe@drifter:~/bin$ /home/joe/bin/readin bash: /home/joe/bin/readin: No such file or directory Hope someone can explain why 'readin' is not found when it is actually there. --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.phxlinux.org To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: https://lists.phxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss

If you were to switch to the Void Linux distro (https://voidlinux.org/), there would be far fewer levels of abstraction on your machine. If you switch to Void, I think all your resource problems would go away or at least have obvious root causes. This isn't to say you wouldn't have other problems with Void. A few marginal programs aren't packaged in Void: You'd use a Mint VM to run those. And Void's not going to have the "we work with all hardware" kind of capability that Mint and Ubuntu have, but if your hardware is more than a year old, that shouldn't be a problem on any distro. When I tried to do sudo apt full-upgrade, I got this result: t420: sudo apt full-upgrade [sudo] password for joe: apt Usage: apt command [options] apt help command [options] Commands: autoclean - Erase old downloaded archive files autoremove - Remove automatically all unused packages build - Build binary or source packages from sources build-dep - Configure build-dependencies for source packages changelog - View a package's changelog check - Verify that there are no broken dependencies clean - Erase downloaded archive files contains- List packages containing a file content - List files contained in a package deb - Install a .deb package depends - Show raw dependency information for a package dist-upgrade- Perform an upgrade, possibly installing and removing packages download- Download the .deb file for a package dselect-upgrade - Follow dselect selections held- List all held packages help- Show help for a command hold- Hold a package install - Install/upgrade packages policy - Show policy settings purge - Remove packages and their configuration files recommends - List missing recommended packages for a particular package rdepends- Show reverse dependency information for a package reinstall - Download and (possibly) reinstall a currently installed package remove - Remove packages search - Search for a package by name and/or expression show- Display detailed information about a package source - Download source archives sources - Edit /etc/apt/sources.list with nano unhold - Unhold a package update - Download lists of new/upgradable packages upgrade - Perform a safe upgrade version - Show the installed version of a package This apt has Super Cow Powers So I tried this: sudo apt dist-upgrade And it ran for a long time and showed a lot of action, but afterword, chrome still has the same problem. -- 2009-02 at 6:23 PM, Brian Cluff wrote: apt upgrade only does a partial upgrade on your system and if that's all you do, your system can get into a place where dependencies get out of wack and the system breaks. instead do: apt full-upgrade or apt dist-upgrade They both do the exact same exact thing, except full upgrade is the new name for dist upgrade option becuase too many people only did upgrade because they were afraid that dist-upgrade would actually upgrade their distribution to the new version... it doesn't. It just tells your system to upgrade all the packages, where plain old upgrade tells the system to only upgrade packages that don't require any additional packages to installed or uninstalled which can leave security problems on your system if the update requires additional packages to be installed. If you've been doing only upgrade for a really long time; be prepared for some broken dependencies that wouldn't have happened if you had done dist-upgrades instead Hopefully apt's dependency calculator will just take care of it for you and all will be good with the world again. --- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.phxlinux.org To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change your mail settings: https://lists.phxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
Re: After Linux Mint update, numerous problems ...
Thanks Brian (and everyone) ... I did the apt dist-upgrade and got these error messages: Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.4.0-148-generic (x86_64) Error! Module version 4.3.40_Ubuntu for vboxguest.ko Error! Module version 4.3.40_Ubuntu for vboxsf.ko Error! Module version 4.3.40_Ubuntu for vboxvideo.ko Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.4.0-148-generic (x86_64) I captured and could post the entire process, but noticed these errors as the process scrolled by. And, after running all this, chrome still opens to a blank or black screen but with the title bar showing the page to which it opened. Everything was working fine before I did the first regular update/upgrade yesterday. Bummer. --- 2009-02 Brian Cluff via PLUG-discuss wrote: apt upgrade only does a partial upgrade on your system and if that's all you do, your system can get into a place where dependencies get out of wack and the system breaks. instead do: apt full-upgrade or apt dist-upgrade They both do the exact same exact thing, except full upgrade is the new name for dist upgrade option becuase too many people only did upgrade because they were afraid that dist-upgrade would actually upgrade their distribution to the new version... it doesn't. Re: After Linux Mint update, numerous problems ...
Thanks Stephen ... I did everything that you suggested and I still get a black window or blank window when I open the Chrome browser. The title bar shows a web page open, but there is nothing in the open window. Meanwhile, I installed Slimjet and it works fine. Firefox works fine. --- 2009-02 Stephen Partington via PLUG-discuss wrote: Apt purge chrome and drop the chrome repo. Download fresh and rename/purge the chrome profile?
