Re: Need help updating linux mint (or) ...

2024-05-16 Thread joe--- via PLUG-discuss

PLUG Friends ...

I need help and I will be glad to pay
someone to help me get my out-of-date
Linux systems updated.

I have four (4) Thinkpads with these
old versions of Linux Mint installed:

#1 T420 linux Mint version 18.1 Serena
#2 T430 linux Mint version 18.1 Serena
#3 T460 Linux Mint version 20.1 Ulyssa
#4 T530 Linux Mint version 19.1 Tessa

#1 is my primary computer and the only
one on which (almost) everything works
the way I want it to work. But the OS
is now too old so it cannot be updated.

Every week, I back up all of my data to
the other three, but each of them have
various deficiencies; including, I cannot
get 4 virtual desktops to work with unique
screen backgrounds on each desktop.

I am considering replacing my old Thinkpads
with T460's or T470's or T480's like these:

Which would you recommend, and would KDE
be better to install than Linux Mint?

"Got everything the way I like it" ... Does this extend beyond user configs?

I would imagine you could probably backup your /home/joe user folder (make
sure you get all the hidden directories like .config) ... Or are you
talking about system wide changes?

I mean, it might hurt at first, but I would back everything up that I
needed or wanted, and then just do a fresh mint install on one, get it the
way you want it, then you could image it for the others, or just do the
same steps on those too.

If you're constantly backing up to the other systems for redundancy, it
might make more sense to just keep a solid backup routine that collects so
the things you want and uploads it to the cloud (public or private).

I've never used MINT per say, but I've been deep in Linux for about
20 years now. Let me know what you think or if you have any questions.

Re: Need help updating linux mint (or) ...

2024-05-17 Thread Stephen Partington via PLUG-discuss
To follow up on Alexander said here, It might be worth it to set up an
Rsync to a single system so that all of the others will sync to that
system. or some of the other roaming profile options.

I personally went with KDE on Garuda Linux, but for your needs arch would
be a good idea over garuda (Gaming centric tweaks and tools).

I like the current state of KDE Plasma it suits me. in the case of an OS, i
would consider picking one that will let you keep updating from old to new
or a good stable rolling release. one that you can keep moving forward as
it seems that you have run into a limit on Mint in that regard.

And this is a great summary of Rolling release vs a more traditional
release and the hazards.
https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/yvmmk8/comment/iwfgohe/

https://itsfoss.com/best-rolling-release-distros/ has a good list of
rolling releases, and given how many Arch derivatives there are suggest to
me that arch seems to handle this really well (at least for my wants and
needs) and for my main system why I chose Garuda.

But as you are in a moment of change, maybe take an extended look at what
you want from these systems and how you want them to work for you.
