Re: Fresh Ubuntu Installation - Events/0 consumes most of cpu

2010-08-17 Thread Eric Cope
I looked in dmesg... I get :

[4951.040817] eth1: New link status: Connected (0001)
[4952.436157] eth1: New link status: Connected (0001)

I tried "sudo ifdown eth1" ... I get interface eth1 not configured.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Eric

Re: OT: Embedded System Driver Testing

My application is slightly different. I am the hardware engineer designing
the embedded chip. I am tasked with writing the sample driver source code
for others within my company. The platform is a microcontroller similar to
Qualcomm's Snapdragon sans the CMDA engine. That book does look appealing.

Thanks,
Eric

There are books, volumes even, written about embedded development and
drivers specifically. An appropriate response is not possible without
more details of you project.

Also, most chip makers provide sample driver source code, etc. that
can be used as a basis for your own code. Or, at least, they have
extensive command specifications, etc. I don't think you'll really
need to write drivers for _everything_.

I'm currently reading this excellent book on the subject, from a TDD
perspective:

If you want more answer than this, please describe your goals and
hardware with more detail.

Re: Changing sftp user's home directory

2010-08-17 Thread Bryan O'Neal
Ok. If all you care about is the users home dir you can ignore sshd
and set the users home dir; as in useradd -other_option -h /some/dir.
Use ACLs for file level acces conttole and set the users shell to
none. Not as good as a chariot jail but some what acceptable and easy
to inplament.
Wish I could provide detail but I am on my blackberry rite now.

Lisa,

Speaking as a native of Phoenix, it was just a warm summer day today.it
only gets hot when the airplanes can't take off and birds start falling dead
out of the sky..;-)

Thanks for the tip on the keyboard indicator. It is in the system tray after
all, and I never noticed it. Should be a flag instead of letters.

Any cool applets that show the actual keyboard layout? I would hate to think
an iMac has more bells and whistles than Debian Gnome! ;-)

Unfortunately the version of openssh included in Centos 5 doesn't have
the functionality you need (specifically ChrootDirectory and friends).
One way to solve this by installing a newer copy of openssh and
disabling the old.

What you're looking for is probably "chroot". I've done this with sftp a long
time ago, but I had to patch sshd and recompile it since there was no support
for chrooting individual users within sshd back then. There may be more
useful info if you google "chroot sftp" or "chroot sshd", since there's not
anything in the sshd man pages here. Plus, I can't remember the exact stuff I
did since it was 7 years ago

Need Help Configuring a German Keyboard

2010-08-17 Thread Mark Phillips
I need to type some German documents, so I would like to use a German
keyboard. My daughter's Mac had a nifty gadget that allows her to switch her
keyboard from English to Spanish when she types papers in Spanish. It has a
cute little Spanish flag on her menu bar and it also popped up a keyboard
map so she could see where the extra accented keys were located when she
typed in Spanish. Is there something similar for Gnome/Debian testing?

I can switch the keyboard using System->Preferences->Keyboard to a German
keyboard, but I would like a visual representation of the keyboard to know
where the keys are located (ie qwerty is actually qwertz on a German
kezboard=. There is supposed to be a gnome applet called keyboard
indicator, but I can't seem to find it on my system or find it in the
Debian repository. The references I have seen are to click on a a panel and
select "keyboard indicator" to install itbut I ain't got one of those
darn things as an option! Very frustrating!

Thanks!

Re: OT: Self Employed Health Insurance Costs and Coverage

2010-08-17 Thread keith smith

Something is very wrong.  In 1979 I went to the ER and received 3 stitches.
Cost : $35.00.  At the time I was attending college and lived in a "guest
house".  It was maybe 400sqft.  I paid about $35/mo in utilities.

A trip to the ER recently for very minor treatment was almost $4000.00 after
the doctor sent his bill.  We were in and out in about an hour.

I was able to get the $3,054 ER charge down to $760.  Sure hope my utilities do
not go up to $760.  Yikes!  The doctor billed us at $665.  I'm waiting for his
adjustment.

I'm glad the ER is there however I need it to be much more reasonable (read as
affordable).

I cannot afford to get sick!

The best insurance I can find cost close to $500/month for my wife and I

Is there any possibility your wife could take a job somewhere with
insurance?  Both times I've been self employed that's what we did.  Full
family coverage for ~ $400/month with a very low deductible.

Some part time gigs even offer (more expensive) insurance.  Still less
than self-employed rates.

without accessing the Insurance.
Any suggestions from others who are self employed?

Their currently is a job posting category on PLUG drupal.

But the sheer number of recruiters, job postings, (often Nationwide 2 month
contract assignments. for instance), coupled with the need to control write
access > thwarth spam makes the jobposts forum problematic, since many don't
know how to use the PLUG CMS.

You might access the PLUG jobposts area pages via:

OT: Self Employed Health Insurance Costs and Coverage

2010-08-17 Thread keith smith

Hi,

I am self employed and have gone without health insurance for a while.  I have
been very healthy, with the exception of bouts of high blood pressure and high
cholesterol.  I was told both could be treated with diet and exercise.  Both in
place.

Here is my dilemma.  I am older so I am more high risk.  The best insurance I
can find cost close to $500/month for my wife and I and it has a $3000
deductible for each of us.  Basically we will be paying $6000/year for
catastrophic insurance and will pay $3000 for each of us until the insurance
kicks in.  If we just have some preventative care, we could end up spending
upwards of $8000 a year without accessing the Insurance.

Any suggestions from others who are self employed?

Thanks!

this is what group permissions are for, just rember when setting them you need
to set group separately from individual/owner and public permissions.

Should create them as the user that is going to use them.  There are
times it is appropriate to create them as root, other times not so
much.  It is very much application specific, though usually you want

to create it as the user that will need to use the file or directory.

Re: Sr. Linux Administrator Contract to Hire Position in Chandler, AZ

2010-08-17 Thread keith smith

I do not know who might have the time, however job postings might be a forum?
added to PLUG?

The ultimate would be an area were recruiters could put up a profile and list
their current need.  That would make it simple for everyone.  Then there would
be no need to be registered with multiple lists.

Yes, they are getting crafty.

I have been contacted by a great many hoping to get submitted to the Jobposts.

Most promise a referral fee, however I never get any such followup, etc.

It would be nice to see a few more lists:

$1 = PLUG
$1hackfest
$1jobposts
$1politics
$1offtopic

Just so everyone can communicate without a barrage of bullmerde?

I will look into setting it up (I might actually have access [I have root on
the server]).

Re: SMEServer?

2010-08-17 Thread Lisa Kachold
Glad you got it.

You can also use the BIOS to disable that NIC. The Intel Pro GB's
(depending on version) are the selection of choice for everyone, but the
broadcom can be made to scream with newer drivers (not a viable option
prehaps when just hammering down udev and defining a device for the first
ethernet slot).
