[SlimDevices: Plugins] POLL for AlienBBC listeners with Ubuntu Dapper

2007-02-18 Thread gian

this is a poll for those who stream AlienBBC on a Ubuntu Dapper box.

Given that Mplayer pre7 hangs after 4'15 and it's the only package
available for Dapper:

1. you are still in the mud
2. found somewhere a pre8 or rc1 package for Dapper (please provide
link)
3. compiled from source because you're a geek
4. moved to Ubuntu 6.10 or 7.04

Needless to say, I'm on number one.
cheers,
-Gian

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC No Programmes Found

2007-02-18 Thread John E Boy

Thanks for the questions bpa.

In answer:
1) Yes - I've followed the modification as details by the Readme.txt
file for SSODS

2) No - if I select Radio4 listen again I don't get any programme
listings - I get no programmes found rather than the 150 odd
programmes I would expect.

3)Yes - I installed the mplayer that came with AlienBBC and it and the
custom-convert.conf file have write permissions.

4) Yes - I installed the correct version of 6.5.x

5) The log file gives the following entries when I try to connect to
radio1

0006: 2007-02-18 09:14:37.8927 Going to parse:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/radio1/audiolist.shtml

0008: 2007-02-18 09:14:38.0323 Found handler for

Slim::Player::Protocols::HTTP
0009: 2007-02-18 09:14:58.1478 Couldn't resolve IP address for:
www.bbc.co.uk

Now I've done a bit of reading up and from the wiki and the forums it
suggests my DNS is wrong. However I get the impression if this were
the case I wouldn't be able to use the BBC stand alone web player on
the PC. This works without a hitch.

Is there some way I can force an entry of IP address and DNS server
address on the Squeezebox without turning off DHCP on the network?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC No Programmes Found

2007-02-18 Thread bpa

The top level entries in AlienBBC are made by the plugin - the next
level are retrieved from BBC so problem is getting data from internet.

There was some sort of DNS issues in slimserver at system startup where
slimserver starts up before the internet connections is made and DNS
setup. Slimserver seemed to cache that DNS wasn't setup. There has
been some fix in 6.5.2

When DS-106 is up and running - can you then stop slimserver and
restart it to see if it works - if it does then it may be the DNS
issue.

I do have a few suggestions: Would it be possible for the currently

It should be doing that already.. Actually, looking at it, if something's
selected, then it turns off the 'auto scroll' code as the user's probably
doing something elsewhere.. Is this what you're seeing ? Maybe it
should auto-deselect after a time delay or something ?

Would it be possible to collapse or dock the playlist somehow...
leaving only the album cover, track details, and controls? I realise
that I can do this manually by playing with the window size

Yeah, I'm going to be adding some more features like docking the
library over the playlist shortly.. It'll need an un-dock button, so
adding minimise and maximise buttons makes sense too.. The
minimise would shrink the playlist down..

when the playlist is totally collapsed, the play controls dissapear
 (rendering bug?).

If you resize the window to the smallest it can be, the play controls
vanish - this is kind of intentional, although probably not much use
anymore.

Would it be possible to add more contextual commands to the right click
when on a track. Currently Refresh/Remove/Manage are displayed. How
about track info (basically the same info provided by the SS web UI
when a title is clicked) and play-hold plugin commands (for instance
to seed MusicIP Mixer). Does this make sense.

Yup.. I'll see what I can squeeze out of the CLI - MusicIP could be a
problem.. I guess the popcorn button could be scripted to do this ?

Sorry... one more. How about being able to view and =edit= ratings via
 the toast pop up?

Yup, makes sense..

I best get typing ! :-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Custom Browse plugin

2007-02-18 Thread erland

rmariger;181384 Wrote:
 (1) Question: I have successfully set up a menu using
customscan/custombrowse that narrows from Artistlist to
 Artist/Albumlist to Artist/Album/Conductorlist to
 Artist/Album/Conductor/Songlist. That is a four-step narrowing of
 songs.

After narrowing songs in this manner, I’d like to be able to click on a
song from step 4 and get a CDlist (I have a tag called “CD” and in my
case only one CD would match a particular Artist/Album/Conductor/Song),
and then click on a CD (the only CD in my case) to get a songlist. That
is, the final two steps would be Artist/Album/Conductor/Song/CDlist and
 Artist/Album/Conductor/Song/CD/songlist.

Is this possible? I think it would be very useful for classical
collections. Most people advocate organizing classical by works rather
than CDs. For example, I have a CD that includes Beethoven’s 4th and
5th symphonies with conductor Ferencsik. I have divided the CD into
two albums, one for the 4th and one for the 5th. However, I’m thinking
there will be instances when I want to play the CD in its entirety. I
might narrow down to the songs in Beethoven’s 5th conducted by
Ferenscik and at that point wonder what CD it is from. I could then
click on any of the 4 songs (movements) of the 5th and have the CD
revealed. And if I want to play the CD, I could then click on the CD
to get all the songs on the CD.
It is not possible with the predefined menu types, but if you choose to
customize the menu XML you can do it already today. The configuration
XML is a bit cryptical so it might not be easy to do.

The real solution here would be to make it possible to add custom tag
in the track details part of the menu. This way it would also be
possible to right click in the Now Playing menu to get the CD of the
currently playing track and right click again to the all tracks on the
CD. I have this on the todo list and my intention is to try to
implement it, I just have to find some time to do the work.
rmariger;181384 Wrote:

 2. Suggestion: With regard to 4-step narrowing of songs referred to
above, the conductorlist does not include “none.” Would it be possible
to include a “none category for each customtag? This would be helpful
for identifying missing tags.I think it can be done already today by
customizing the menu XML, but I
think this might actually be useful to have in the default Custom
Multiple Tags Songs template so I'll add it to the wish list.

rmariger;181384 Wrote:
 3. Suggestion: It might be helpful to point out that the 4-step
narrowing scheme I alluded to above requires that artist, album, and
conductor be included in the list of custom tags to be scanned by
customscan. I initially assumed that because the standard slimserver
software scans artist and album, it wasn’t necessary to specify them as
custom tags.It is possible to use the standard slimserver information, but the
current menu template for Custom Multiple Tags Songs doesn't do it. I
think it might be a good idea to have a menu template like:
Artists/Albums/customtag/Songs
I'll add this to the wish list.

Thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it.

My answer is #4, but I got the stopping at 4'15 effect after my upgrade
from dapper as the repository for edgy still seemed to have only mplayer
1.07. My solution was to do 'apt-get update', and 'apt-get install
mplayer' in a terminal which got me a copy of 1.08. After that the
problem went away.

Not sure if this would work with the standard dapper repositories but
might be worth a shot.

I'm not a geek and I managed to go to RC1.

I did the job with little problems. You must mess with the operating
system for maximum joy.

./configure --enable-gui --enable-largefiles --enable-menu
--prefix=/usr--confdir=/etc/mplayer

make
make install

Is the basis for things, but you must make sure all the required files
are in place and i had some problems with permissions of folders.
The latest file for mplayer is on the mplayer website.

the site has a readme and extra instructions.
I have moved to edgy.

I agree this is the perfect solution. (I assume, however, that you
could right-click on the track in the left-hand-side browse window, not
just the playing now list.) I think this feature would be widely and
greatly appreciated by classical buffs. I am just getting started
tagging my classical collection but I am aware that there is a lot of
frustration among classical buffs at the difficulty of managing
classical music in slimserver. It seems to me that most of the
difficulty arises from tension between organizing by CD and organizing
by Work. The example I gave with Beethoven's 4th and 5th did not do
justice to the dilemma. Many CD's feature a Performer, the Works
performed are not always complete, and every track is by a different
composer. In that case, organizing by Work makes a lot less sense than
organizing by CD (or Performer). But you want to be consistent because
there are lots of cases where it is a toss-up as to whether it is
better to organize by CD or Work. With the solution you propose—being
able quickly find all the songs sharing the same CD or performer or ? as
a particular song—would allow one to have a consistent tagging scheme
without compromising the ease of making a sensible playlist.

The upshot---I cast a very enthusiastic vote in favor of this feature.

Thanks,
Randy

2. Using Wordpad (not notepad) edit the custom-convert.conf file in the

The last two comments describe similar behavior. No idea why this would
happen. Basically, the slimfx skin is just an html file that loads up a
SWF (Flash file). (Actually, it uses another frame to load the SWF). I
would expect it to work if any other skins work. I suppose it could be
a caching issue, or an issue in handling redirects from the directory

This looks very promising. I installed and it just worked. Not tried
outside of my LAN yet. My comments...:

Plugin support - It would be nice to support plugins, particularly
Trackstat (in my case, everyone has their own favourites). I guess some
form of generic support, i.e. taking the contributions the plugin adds
to the web UI, would be best but I don't know how easy this is.

Remote player - this might be out of scope, but I don't just want a
controller, I want a player. When I am out of my LAN I want to be able
to play music across the Internet and I hate having to maintain two
applications for this. Furthermore, within my LAN I also have custom
players other than a Squeezebox, e.g. set top boxes.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Custom Browse plugin

2007-02-18 Thread rmariger

As I said, I am just getting started tagging my classical music, so I am
keen to do it carefully so I don’t have to redo it. (I did about 20
CDs, changed course several times, and decided to sit back a while and
be careful about it.) Of course, how one tags depends importantly on
the ability to parse the tag information in slimserver, which explains
yesterdays post and this post.

I am now trying to decide on how to do genre. For example, do I choose
“Classical;Concerto;Piano” or “Classical;Piano Concerto”? I would
choose the former if it was easy to limit searches to the intersection
of “Concerto” and “Piano.” Your Genres/Sub Genres template allows me
to this narrowing of songs:

1. Genre1_list
2. Genre1/Genre2_list
3. Genre1/Genre2/artistlist
4. Genre1/Genre2/artist/albumlist
5. Genre1/Genre2/artist/album/songlist.

But as explained my posting yesterday, I’d like this sequence:

Steps 1-4 above
5’. Genre1/Genre2/artist/album/conductorlist
6. Genre1/Genre2/artist/album/conductor/songlist.

This could be done with your multiplecustomtagstracks template if it
allowed for five levels rather than just four. I perhaps naively was
thinking I could mindlessly alter the xml files to add a fifth level to
the filtering. But I had much difficulty even identifying the files
that would need to be altered.

I have no experience with XML, HTML, and SQL. So I understand that you
don’t won’t to waste time with any back and forth on how I can customize
your templates. But I have purchased some books and would like to gain
some understanding. To this end, could you provide a schematic of the
basic architecture? That is, what files do what. I promise not to
pester you with any follow-up questions.

I infer that slimserver/plugins/customscan/menu
templates/multiplecustomtagstracks.cb.values.xml is the form which
solicits the inputs I enter when I create the custom menu, and those
inputs are then stored in XX/custombrowse/YY.xml, where XX is the
directory I select in the slimserver settings and YY is the file name I
select when I create the menu. (What do the *.template files do in
slimserver/plugins/custombrowse/menu templates?) So all I can identify
are xml files that solicit user inputs and the file into which those
inputs are stored.

Can I create a 5-level multiplecustomtagstracks menu by simply altering
an input file? Don’t I need to alter the program that processes the
inputs? If so, where is that program?

I note that earlier cutombrowse releases included notes in the readme
file on how to create custom menus but your latest build does not. I
suppose you are trying to avoid novice questions like mine. With
regard to the notes in an earlier version, you allude to files of the
form *.cb.xml. I can find no such files---only files of the form
*.cb.values.xml. (Those notes refer to xml files that appear to be
real programs—not just holders of inputs.)

I will entirely understand if you choose to punt these questions.

Thanks.

Randy

I am now trying to decide on how to do genre. For example, do I choose
 “Classical;Concerto;Piano” or “Classical;Piano Concerto”? I would
choose the former if it was easy to limit searches to the intersection
of “Concerto” and “Piano.”If your main concern with tagging is to be able to
 browse the music and
you have no problem using Custom Browse instead of standard slimserver
browsing, I would definitely choose the Classical;Concerto;Piano
route. The Genres/Sub Genres menu type may not work for you today,
but I will add to the wish list to make a version which also takes a
custom tag level at the end. So when you are finished with the tagging
a suitable menu is probably available. New menus like this doesn't
require any code changes in Custom Browse so they are quite easy for me
to do. I'll add all menu types to the distribution that I feel can be
useful for more than a single person, this is definitely the case with
Genres/Sub Genres incl Custom Tag.

At the moment I'm in the middle of some major restructuring of the
Custom Browse code, so I don't have a working Custom Browse on my
developing machine which makes it a bit harder to do new/changed menus
in the next days/weeks.

Your Genres/Sub Genres template allows me to this narrowing of songs:

 1. Genre1_list
 2. Genre1/Genre2_list
 3. Genre1/Genre2/artistlist
 4. Genre1/Genre2/artist/albumlist
 5. Genre1/Genre2/artist/album/songlist.

But as explained my posting yesterday, I’d like this sequence:

 Steps 1-4 above
 5’. Genre1/Genre2/artist/album/conductorlist
 6. Genre1/Genre2/artist/album/conductor/songlist.

This could be done with your multiplecustomtagstracks template if it
allowed for five levels rather than just four. The multiplecustomtagstracks
template will not work exactly the same as
Genres/Sub Genres does, the difference is that Genres/Sub Genres
will list both artists and sub genres making it possible to choose
tracks which just have a single genre, with the
multiplecustomtagstracks the menu would only show track which have at
least two genres. I'm also not completely sure if the
multiplecustomtagstracks menu will work correctly if two levels are
using the same tag, in this situationm level1=GENRE and level 2=GENRE.
So I think it would probably be better to extend the
subgenres(Genres/Sub Genres) menu type to also include a custom tag
level.

 like this:
1. Plugins/CustomBrowse/Templates/*.template (The builtin menu type
templates, the corresponding files for custom tags exist in
Plugins/CustomScan/Templates/*.template)
2. Plugins/CustomBrowse/Templates/*.xml (The builtin menu type
in-parameter specification, the corresponding files for custom tags
exist in Plugins/CustomScan/Templates/*.template)
3. The template directory from Custom Browse settings\*.template
(Downloaded menu type templates and templates added by the user)
4. The template directory from Custom Browse settings\*.xml
(Downloaded menu type in-parameter specifications and in-parameter
specifications added by the user)
5. The browse configuration directory from Custom Browse
settings\*.cb.xml (Complete menus where the user has choosen the
Customize configuration option in the web interface when editing the
menu)
6. The browse configuration directory from Custom Browse
settings\*.cb.values.xml (In-parameter values for complete menus where
the user has NOT choosen the Customize configuration option in the web
interface when editing the menu. Templates are expanded to a real menu
using these in-parameter values)

If you know a specific menu which you want the easiest way is to just
choose to Customize configuration when editing the menu in the web
interface. This will store the menu as a *.cb.xml file as described in
point 5 above. This menu won't have options, so after you have choosen
the Customize configuration option it will be harder to select
exactly which custom tags that shall be part of the menu. But as long
as you have already choosen the correct custom tags before choosing to
Customize configuration this shouldn't be a problem.

If you want many different menus that works the same but with different
custom tags for each menu you should instead create a template by
copying and renaming a suitable *.template and *.xml file from the
directory as specified in point 3 and 4. I would suggest that you copy
and rename instead of changing the files directly if you choose this
path. I would also suggest that you remove the
downloadsection*/downloadsection and
downloadidentifier*/downloadidentifier parts from the file you
edit, the reason is that if you don't do this there is a risk your
changed menu will be overwritten if you ever hit the download links in
the
