I think I was user #2 for this plugin. Actually use it at work to stream
information to customers. Just welcoming them to the store and inviting
them to ask questions. It is really great to have someone like Michael
who enjoys these little projects. It adds so much life to an already
extraordinary product.

Thanks again for the plugin Michael,

Mike

I believe that should work fine. As I wrote earlier, my -x/-t/-T logic
might not be appropriate in Windows, but piping the output of a Cygwin
exe should work fine,

Ok thanks.. would be a great addition for the future though, since it
makes it much more flexible.

@PeterW:
Too bad I abandoned Linux a while ago for my home system, since I need
windows for several reasons.. now the question would be.. is there a
windows port of fortune? or something similar? (for this usage without
a GUI would be fine, just some sort of script).

Yes, it would, but at the cost of much more complexity. It's really just a
quickly hacked together plugin I did a while ago.

That's where the trouble would start for that kind of plugin: how to check
whether a file should be displayed or executed on different platforms? The
plugin says it all: it's a file viewer :-).

It looks like the Cygwin distribution has a port of fortune, you could
give that a try: http://www.cygwin.com/

[SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] FileViewer screensaver

2007-03-25 Thread Michael Herger
This is a simple screensaver which will display a text file of your choice
as a screensaver. This has been around in the forums for a while. But this
is the first version featuring a configuration page to set the text file.
No need any more to edit the plugin file directly :-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] FileViewer screensaver

Just wondering, since I saw you programmed many great plugins for
slimserver.

Couldn't you extend the concept a little?

I remember a few years ago on my first linux box I discovered a program
called fortune. Which displayed a funny line everytime it was called.
There's some similar programs for windows out there, but none with the
awesome database of lines/sayings of the original fortune.
So a screensaver displaying random lines from this fortune (cookie)
database would be great.

Try this patch. You can put a command (fully qualified paths only!!!) as
the filename. You can add arguments if you want, too. So you can set the
filename to
/usr/games/fortune -s
to get short fortunes.

Michael -- this also fixes a couple missing string bugs.

Two things:

1) I goofed and used the -t (TTY!?!) test instead of -T (text file)
2) If I'd gotten the -T test right, my patch would not work well with
simple shell scripts, as it would only execute the file if it's
executable and Perl thinks it's not a text file.

I think point #2 is fine in Linux/Mac/Unix -- you'd just need to use a
setting like

/bin/bash /home/myuser/myscript.sh argument1 argument2

although perhaps the -x and -T requirement should have some alternative
logic in Windows where file extensions are more important.
