[SlimDevices: Plugins] [PoC] 3D Album Browser (Windows)

2008-03-22 Thread simbo

I've recently been contemplating alternative ways of visualising music
collections, in particular using 3D and other aesthetic approaches that
forego extensive functionality in favour of being slick and easy-to-use.
Also of interest to me is a ten-foot interface for SqueezeCenter;
something that could be displayed on the TV and used at parties etc.

So, here is a proof-of-concept for a 3D album browser. The
visualisation I've used is "inspired by" (read: ripped off from)
Apple's CoverFlow interface. I chose this to get people thinking of the
general approach (probably being comfortable with the metaphor) rather
than getting hung up on something more exotic.

What do I mean by proof-of-concept? Well the idea is to understand the
technical feasibility and generate discussion on the benefits (if any)
of such an approach to the SD community. I'm hoping people will have
other ideas on how music collections could be visualised (not just the
old favourite album art). This PoC has just enough functionality to get
the point across and inspire - it is by no means intended to exhaustive
(or *ahem* stable). If it generates enough interest then I may develop
it further.

So, please give it a go if you're interested. I've attached some
screenshots below. Please make sure you read the readme.txt file and
peruse the config.ini file before starting it up, and let me know if
you have any issues.

Windows Vista

I tried to just copy the files in the ZIP to a desktop folder and run
it. I did change the host to where SC is running (not the box I'm
running this from). Looks like I'm missing something - I got an error
message:

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this

For example:

rather than be handled by this dialog box.

I suspect this is caused by an out-of-date DirectX component - can you
try installing the DirectX updates? The URL is in the readme.txt file.
Let me know if this resolves it (or if not!).

VERY interested in this!

Unfortunately, even after updating DX9 via the provided URL, the
program says it cannot connect to SC, and to make sure the CLI port is
correct and open, both of which it is. :(

The screenshots look awesome, tho. Have fun developing!

Hmm... I added the CLI port comment because I found that port 9090
hadn't been automatically opened on the server by SC (even though port
9000 was). I can't remember if the CLI plugin is enabled by default -
it would fail if it wasn't. Assuming you've checked that, let's wait
and see if others have problems connecting. Thanks for letting me know.

I've got DirectX 10 installed. I'm not sure if it is "later" than 9.0c
or not, though. I've been unable to install 9.0c (both web and full)

dxupdate.cpp is not trusted error.
Any advice?
Thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [PoC] 3D Album Browser (Windows)

2008-03-22 Thread dwilliams01

FINALLY managed to get DirectX 9.0c installed... so it runs!!!

I tried about 100 things so I have no idea what combination finally did
it, though.

Now, to the point...

Looks Great!

1) The scroll wheel movement works really nice.
2) It seems to respond even when it doesn't have focus - a bit of a
problem when I started typing this note...
3) Would be nice if it had a "Now Playing" screen/mode as well. That
would be nice to for when people are over (party, etc.). SC is OK, but
I see other people with Windows Media Center showing on the Big Screen
for everyone to see.

Excellent POC!!!

Anyway back to my error. Below is the error I get. I have .net 2.0 and

Thanks for the feedback. If this gets developed further then a "Now
Playing" mode would be mandatory. My thinking is to use different
visualisations for each mode but in a way that's intuitive.

Agreed, I run MCE myself, which is why I'm aiming towards a ten-foot
interface.

Good suggestion; possibly, in the future. At the moment I just want to
get some discussion going on the idea and its benefits. OS projects
have a habit of "jumping in the deep end" without a clear understanding
of the goals. Usability-focused applications are even more sensitive to
this.

Aguida Wrote:
> Anyway back to my error. Below is the error I get. I have .net 2.0 and

Have you tried installing the DirectX updates anyway? Having DX10 does
not guarantee that DX9 applications work. From my own testing I believe
that errors in Program.Initialise() are caused by outdated DX
components.

although I did have to pull out my Vista CD and restore back to prior

Yikes! I didn't have any issues after running the DX update on my Vista

This is just way cool!  I have really liked this view in the itunes app;
having it available for Squeeze is just unbelievable. I can see all
kinds of opportunities for you to spend 28 hours a day on this! ;-)

At this level of PoC, is it supposed to be able to actually play the
music? I couldn't quite get that to happen.

Are you reading artwork from the settings in squeezecenter 7.x? By
that I mean I have set to use multiple different file names for the
artwork.

A nice approach would be to have a choice in how your albums
sort/display. for me, I like to see by artist, by year, then by album
name. Should be just a different query against the db.

As I think of more things, I'll give more feedback.

Thanks for this, I think it has many possibilities. Would be nice if
we could get it to work with the remote! ;-)

I haven't tested it on 6.5, the only v7 feature I'm using is to request
album artist when getting albums. You could always try it on 6.5 and see
what happens.

mkgolden1 Wrote:

Thanks for the feedback! I'm using the SC's URL approach
(/music/id/cover.png) to get back the artwork.

> At this level of PoC, is it supposed to be able to actually play the

Yeah it's supposed to - highlighting a track and hitting space should
do it... but you saw my stability disclaimer, right? ;-) It will only
control the first player known to your SqueezeCenter, could this be
it?

> I like to see by artist, by year, then by album name.
If there's enough interest I'll be developing further, but I'm
interested in exploring other visualisations for other views - for
example using pictures of artists for the group-by-artist view, and
using metaphors other than the iTunes one. I'd like to get some
opinions on this.

> Would be nice if we could get it to work with the remote! ;-)
My intention was to make it work with media-centre-style remotes (in
keeping with the 10ft UI approach)... I'd never even considered making
it work with the SB remote! Could be an idea, if it's possible to send
such messages back to the client from SC.

re: Group by:
your explorations sounds interesting. My sort order "I like to see by
artist, by year, then by album name." was not how I view in itunes
(only used currently to load my wife's ipod) but rather how I view in
the SC7 album interface.

as i said, I definitely think this warrants further development.
Coupled with the ability to print the library (from ACC) these have
been my two greatest "like to haves". The simplicity of the user
interface would allow anyone to use my library.

no. I noticed in your screen shots that you had a graphic there of some
sort. Not in mine. Environment is sc7.01 latest daily build, on
Win2003 server, with the files on a remote share (soon to be DFS).
Reads the db for the graphics but the music won't start.

Before you go too far with it, I also have issues with using any
browser other than one that is local, includes FF and IE. Permissions
are all granted, but the new default skin won't display readily. This
occurs from multiple computers. So, perhaps there is an issue on my
side.

You do need to have DirectX 9.0c installed - 10 won't work. I would
suggest getting the redistribution one instead of the SDK one, though.
Also expand the download into a directory that is not in "program files"
or some other "protected" area to actually install it from. I used
c:\temp. Also run the real install (dxsetup.exe) "as administrator".
This was for Windows Vista. If my experience is anything to go by I'd
also make sure that you create a restore point prior to starting - just
in case...

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [PoC] 3D Album Browser (Windows)

2008-03-25 Thread Aguida

Ok, I don't have any clue why I can't get it to work. I tried on 3
different computers and always get the same error (as I posted before,
something with a module not loaded).

PC1: Windows XP (DK), .net 2.0, Dx 9.0c
PC2: Windows Vista (US), .net 3.5, Dx 10 (note when trying to install
.net 2.0 it says that is already installed)
PC3: Windows XP MCE (DK), .net 2.0, DX 9.0c

The only thing I haven't tried is the combination Vista + DX9.0c.
However it seems strange to require this combination since Vista comes
directly with Dx 10.

All in all seems a pretty unstable platform you trying to build your
PoC on. This will probably cause you to use more time on debugging
people's configuration problems than visualization concepts.

I would consider using something like: www.microsoft.com/silverlight.
It will shield you from all those problems.

Thanks so far for trying. I still hope you will keep working on it, and

If you're willing to try, you could install the TV3D SDK (6.5 Full
Setup) 'from here' (http://www.truevision3d.com/downloads.php) and see
if the demos work. At least then we'd know if its my code or not!

I chose the TrueVision3D library because it's one of the more stable
out there, but the truth is we're in the realm of 3D accelerated
graphics, which means drivers and the like come into play. I can't
disagree with you that these debugging posts are moving the topic away
from the visualisation discussion. On hindsight, I may have been better
off posting mock-ups but I wanted a little wow-factor to get people
motivated. The best laid plans...

> I would consider using something like: www.microsoft.com/silverlight. It

I originally thought about Silverlight - in fact I started building on
it, however 3D in Silverlight is still quite immature and slow (and
doesn't use hardware acceleration) and I wanted to use 3D in the PoC to
get people thinking if the extra dimension gives the interface
another... erm... dimension. I'm not saying a 10ft UI for SC7 -has- to
be 3D, but the point of a PoC is to find the boundaries.

Thanks for your candid opinions, I'm sorry you haven't been able to get
it working yet.

Good news! :-)

I downloaded the demo it works perfectly. After that your PoC worked
too! Did I miss some instructions about installing something? I had
just unpacked your zip file in a folder and run from there.

Anyway the great news is that it works in all the configurations (also
with DX10) as long as I have run the demo first. It looks great!

It's more likely I missed something - maybe another TV3D component is
needed in the distro. I'm glad it's working for you now. Your initial
observations still stand though - I'll think about some way to get the
UI discussion going - maybe I'll start a separate thread focusing on
the approach with a link to this one for the PoC.

On Vista, you still need to install 9.0c. Looks like 10 isn't just the
latest version so you have to install it. It worked on my Vista box
after I installed 9.0c (yes, 10 was already present for me as well).

No no need to install 9.0c. My Vista installation is as it came from the
DVD with Dx10 and nothing else. After installing the sdk and running the
demo it just worked. I don't believe the sdk installs any other version
of Dx. This is also consistent with my other 2 PCs that already had
9.0c installed and still experienced the exception. Both worked after
installing the sdk and running the demo.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [PoC] 3D Album Browser (Windows)

2008-03-25 Thread dwilliams01

Certainly very intested in this - I think that the POC was a complete
success from that point of view... :)

Yes, sorting options would be needed. I prefer artist/album, myself.

I, for one, probably wouldn't take the time to find all of the artists
pictures to use. A VERY interesting idea, though. I could see that
some would like it. Genre would be another one that pictures could be
used to scroll through, but again, coming up with the artwork would be
a challenge. I wouldn't mind the ability to optionally attach a
picture to those, or playlists for that matter, though.

For now playing I was thinking that the same UI method could be used.
The album art flowing in/out with the current song's album in the
center would be nice. The song title underneath the artwork. The
current song would have to have some sort of highlight, though so you
would know when you were "back".

Another look would be the tiled approach - a big grid of album art that
you can move up/down/left/right through. Kind of boring, but maybe
quicker???

I keep wanting to grab an album with the mouse and drag it left/right
to scroll through the list. Is that possible? It seems more natural
than the scroll wheel method.

The ability to "add" to the end or next of the current playlist would
be essential in a party-type situation. Everyone wants to scroll
around a pick something, etc. For this reason I'd love the ability to
"lock out" the current "clear playlist and play this song/album"
feature. It seems that everyone hits the play button at least once
when using any of the other interfaces (web, SB3 remote, new
controller) and wiping out everyone's previous selections is both
common and unwelcome. Basically a "jukebox mode".

Any thoughts on deployment platform choices? I'd think that I would
potentially setup one of those "quiet" boxes to put on the rack by the
AVR/TV, etc. I could see it being easily combined with something like
MythTV, etc. (even though I use Tivo) so any thoughts on a non-Windows
version (I think that MythTV, etc. is linux based)? Also, for this I'd
like to have as little mgt. as possible so an install-n-forget linux
vesion might be very popular (and cheaper since it saves the cost of a
Windows license).

Are you done yet??? :)

Agree - it certainly is. I was thinking that it was more of a
"parallel" type of thing where some apps need one version and others,
another. You can have both 9 and 10 installed at the same time,
anyway, so that certainly seems to be the case.

All I did to get it to work on my Vista box was installing the 9.0c
redeployement. Of course, that took a bit of work for me for some
reason but even the second time around it didn't work, installed 9.0c,
then it did. I wouldn't wonder if the SDK installs some other pieces,
though, so that it can work in different environments with different
versions, etc. No idea and now there are 2 ways to get it to work, I
guess. Great!!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [PoC] 3D Album Browser (Windows)

2008-03-25 Thread mkgolden1

I was thinking it would be nice to use an old laptop (it would fit
nicely in my current setup) and have this app for a party. One danger
we have here is in rebuilding the whole interface. But ;-):

It would be important to have the ability to queue songs rather than
replace as already noted by dwilliams1. I too have the same problem,
press 'play' when I meant 'add'. That said, then we also need the
ability to clear the queue when someone selects sweet child o' mine
when it is a miles davis night. Perhaps a queue screen where we can
select an album/song and choose delete?

I like the option of keys or mouse for scrolling around.

some ability to switch between 'now playing' and 'select' so folks can
see what is playing and then add.

genre would be a nice option somehow, haven't thought that through.
That almost gets to creating a playlist that people can play from. So,
perhaps assigning/selecting a playlist that is where the selections come
from? That needs further thought.

more as I think about it...

So am I (very inetrested). As said my original wish was just to have
something similar to the Vista Media Center music browser but
controlling the slimserver instead of the local music.

I think that the your way of scrolling albums is better than Vista's,
so I am really looking forward to something running on media center and
controllable with the remote.

Please make sure to support MCE 2005 as well as many are still using it
since Vista's MC UI is not in everybody's taste ;-) (certainly not
mine)

Just having what you have implemented today would be a dream.
Additional views (by artist, by genre, etc) as well as searching could
be added in future versions.

Keeping this thread on top of my feeds newsreader :-)

Thanks.

Looks very interesting. Not sure how relevant my comment are as it's a Proof
od Concept, but I had a number of crashes and error messages once I got it
working. I suspect a lot of these are due to the way you request the album
info?

I set the limit to zero in the .ini file, and immediately got a huge error
box that seemed to include a truncated CLI command response. I'd suggest you
retrieve the albums (say) 10 at a time until you get them all to get around
this.

Also, while browsing through the albums, the title displayed was often
incorrect for the artwork that was currently selected.

Apart from that, a very interesting concept, and one that I'd definitely
like to see taken further. The ability to retrieve a full library is
obviously a good start, as is selecting between the players in a system.
>From then, adding in different browse options as others have said would
definitely be a plus.

I'd love to be able to run something like this 'full screen' on a laptop for
selecting music, with the ability to build up a playlist and use the mouse
to move tracks around.

I was in the process of implementing a utility (in Python) to allow for the
entire library to be printed out (after retrieving details via the CLI) so
if there's anything I can help with in that regard I'd be happy to help.

Look forward to seeing any future progress.

I agree it needs to be more scaleable if it becomes a real project, and
I think your approach is the best way to achieve that. In the meantime,
you could try increasing the SocketDelay value (try 200+) in config.ini
to see if that helps. If not, please could you PM me the error (just out
of curiosity)?

Could be related to above. I'll probably add some diagnostic stuff to
root out these issues.

Full screen would be a necessity for the 10ft UI to work. I only
disabled it in the PoC so I wouldn't have to code resizing and
positioning procedures! :-)

Thanks, I had a few issues with IP packet management via the CLI (which
probably explains your first issue and is why the SocketDelay hack
exists). If I develop this further I might come back to you to see what
you did.

I'm not sure that SocketDelay would help, and to be honest I'm not too
concerned just yet as it's obviously a quick Proof of Concept and not a
final release. Not sure I could get the error, but given my knowledge of the
CLI it looked like the remainder of a response asking for albums.

I suspect you gave it a buffer, and the response was actually longer than
that, which got your parsing code confused as it tried to process the result
of the next 'read' from the socket.

> Could be related to above. I'll probably add some diagnostic stuff to

Quite possibly. I think I dropped the album count down to something more
sensible (200 if memory serves) so that I could have a play with the rest of
the stuff without running into problems retrieving the album list.

Understood!

No problem. Basically (if memory serves) you can tell the CLI commands how
many results you want them to return, and at what 'offset' to start
returning results from. I set this to something relatively small so that I
didn't run into any issue with split responses.

First of all, I did:

info total albums ?

to retrieve the number of albums in the system, then kept doing:

albums 0 10 tags:lyjiqwa
albums 10 10 tags:lyjiqwa
albums 20 10 tags:lyjiqwa
...

until I'd retrieved them all.

Bet of luck, definitely interested to see how this progresses. Any chance of
a PDA version? :D

I've been pondering on this. How about if it was possible to share a
library of images (from Creative Commons etc), maybe just URLs to the
images?
- Artists would be straightforward (but probably the hardest to
collect).
- For Years; how about a significant event from that year ('69:
Armstrong on the moon; '89: Berlin Wall dismantling, etc).
- Genres; an instrument that epitomises that genre (could get messy
with subgenres - Jazz Rock Fusion anyone?)

Eventually including multiple selections in the filter could be a great

You're absolutely right; ease-of-use and seek-time are primary factors
in a music-browsing interface. My explorations in using 3D
visualisations are to understand what could enhance these factors (or
at the very least not compromise them). If a traditional 2D list works
best for certain views then that's fine, we could even decide that a
MCE 2005 clone (screenshots 'here'
and 'here'
for those who haven't seen it) is all that's needed, but it's nice to
explore alternatives. For what it's worth, I find the MCE album art
browser difficult to work with via the MCE remote because it requires
you to use navigation buttons on both axes. Personally I think any
browsing interface should stick to one axis. I should mention that I'm
a usability fanatic (certified, no less) and take things like
affordance and time-on-task to heart.

Here's my take of the situation, based on my own experiences and the
comments in this post so far:-
- There is a potential space in the Squeezebox setup for a simplified
UI focused on being easy to use (particularly for non-owners such as
house guests) and non-destructive (e.g. cannot accidentally wipe out
the current playlist).
- There is a perceived demand for a "10ft UI", one that can be
displayed on a TV and controlled via a remote control. Integration with
Media Center would be nice.
- A UI that has a certain "wow-factor" (i.e. impress-ya-friends) could
be beneficial, especially with the emergence of highly stylised
products such as 'Sooloos' (http://www.sooloos.com).

I would love to hear what other people's opinions are on this,
especially around the validity and demand for these requirements.

Thanks. I have looked at Silverlight 2 but it doesn't support hardware
acceleration so limited 3D use. However, if it's decided that only a 2D
interface is needed then it's very likely I'd be developing in
Silverlight 2.

I just thought this looked quite ok.

Nice idea. Please bear in mind that SqueezeCenter is a cross-platform
product, however. Do you have any plans to support non-Windows
platforms in a final version?

The cross-platform conundrum has crossed my mind. :-) A purely 2D
interface is relatively straightforward using a technology like
Silverlight or Flash. Hardware-accelerated 3D is a different story; the
only cross-platform 3D API is OpenGL and that's still problematic with
the sheer variation in OSes and hardware (not all GPU manufacturers
offer decent support for OpenGL).

I think this is something that needs to be considered if this becomes a
fully-fledged project. Is it better to target a subset of the user base
and then possibly open the code so others could port to other
platforms? To develop in OpenGL accepting the additional development
time and potential issues? To dismiss the 3D approach and stick to 2D?
I'm open to suggestions.

Sorry, no. :-( I hacked the TV version by hardcoding the positions for
HD (720) resolution; just wanted to see how it looked. I've recently
been toying with ideas for visualising the "Now Playing" playlist to
understand if there are benefits in having a 3D visualisation (like the
one below) rather than a standard list. I'll let you know what I come up

Ineresting, thanks for pointing it out. I was looking at a similar
approach for a Silverlight implementation because it doesn't really do
any heavy 3D stuff, just resizing and moving the images (no rotating,
which is one of the more processor-intensive tasks).

The issue is when you try to blow these things up to an HD resolution -
the framerate would be low and the lack of anisotropic filtering may be
distracting on a big screen. Having said that, if it's decided that
"real" (hardware accelerated) 3D is overkill for this UI then I'll
definitely be looking that this kind of approach.

Hi

This plug-in sounds extremely interesting - I'd love to have something
like this running on an old laptop for parties etc.

I tried running it on Vista and received the exception error as listed
at the start of the thread. I installed DirectX as per the readme URL
and that error went away - to be replaced by "Cannot connect to SC ...
check config & CLI port is open" etc.

I disabled the firewall temporarily with no luck. Otherwise I've no
idea what else to edit in the config.ini. (I'm running SC on the local
PC)

If you're running the album browser on the same PC as SC, I take it
you're specifying the server as "localhost"? If you are, you could try
using the PC name/IP address, or even 127.0.0.1. There are some issues
with Vista recognising localhost applications.

Yes I tried the actual servername and 127.0.0.1 with no difference even

Maybe the app could log which exact step of the connection is failing?

What is the CLI Port exactly? I ran 'netstat' and couldn't see anything

Actually I did read the whole thread - but your error concerned the
missing module exception, and as I mentioned:

"I tried running it on Vista and received the exception error as listed

The demos run fine but I still see the connection error when running 3D

I did manage to borrow an XP client and after installing DirectX, 3D
Browser seems to work fine on that (to my SC server) - and it looks
great!
(But I really need it to work on the Vista/SC box ...)

Did you switch on the Persistent Cache? If so, yes it's probably the
rescan, switching it off again should resolve it. If you didn't switch
on the Cache, the SocketDelay change may help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [PoC] 3D Album Browser (Windows)

2008-04-16 Thread Chasman666

First, of course, great idea/product - am seeing large touch screens and
all sorts of browsing excitement!

Secondly I have a couple of practical glitches which I feel are worth
mentioning:

{Winxp Home, SC7)

For me at least if I set maxalbums to 17 or over it errors out, saying
length cannot be less than zero or some such. Between 1 and 16 (incl.)
'tis fine and when set to 0 also works perfectly (displaying art for
first 100 albums as per your limit). Not sure what might be causing
this.

It takes a long time (couple of minutes) to load all albums which makes
sense on the first time but if I have caching on then I would
expect/want it to load more quickly on subsequent attempts using the
cached data.

I love the fact that you can jump to the beginning of a letter range
with the keyboard - this makes browsing far more practical (of course
other search methods would be needed in a final product), but whilst
the art skips to the right point, the title and artist do not (a left
or right nudge is needed to correct) and if you hit space to access
album then the album and artist are still wrong but the right tracks do
appear. Just thought I'd point that out.

And finally(!) it is reacting to inputs when it is not the program in
focus.

Great stuff and look forward to seeing further developments - time and
weather permitting!

Charlie

Increased SocketDelay to 200 - no difference. I think there's something
fundamentally preventing communication to SC - prolly a Vista security
feature! ;-) However I've disabled everything I can think of and run
the app as admin etc.

With the XP error I didn't enable the Persistent Cache.

It can handle albums with no cover, it's more likely to be a IP packet
handling issue (as adhawkins has pointed out, my current networking
implementation needs some work ;-). Try increasing the SocketDelay
value in config.ini to 200 or higher - that may help.

The feedback from the poll looked fairly favourable, but with a lot of
people thinking a non-3D interface could suffice. In true PoC style,
I've been looking at other ways of implementing (3D and non-3D) but I
haven't had a lot of time to work on this recently. Hope to be getting
back to it soon.

Still waiting to dazzle friends and family with this - hopefully you
have some spare time coming up. Certainly be willing to help out
testing. :)

Good chase! :-) As you've probably guessed I haven't done a lot with
this recently. With SqueezePlay just round the corner, hopefully
meeting many of the original needs (i.e. a simplified UI), this may
become redundant however it's to be seen if this is the case. I'm also
interesting in seeing how feasible it would be to integrate a 3D view
into SqueezePlay. If this isn't possible or is too slow, I might be
picking this project back up again. I'm open to thoughts or opinions on
this.
