If it is AlienBBC then you may not have deleted all the old AlienBBC files as there should be no iPlayer menu item. All AlienBBC menu are now "iPlayer" menus and so the old iPlayer menu item will not work. Stop SC. Delete the file alienbbc.opml in SC playlist directory (or if you do not have a playlist directory defined - the cache directory). Make sure the old manually installed AlienBBC directory has been deleted. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC addon to read iPlayer menus
Since you are based in the UK - the BBC iPlayer plugin ( http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53229&highlight=iPlayer ) would probably be better for you than AlienBBC. It has the following advantages 1. MP3 streams means native decoding in SB and less load on server (no transcoding) 2. MP3 "Listen Again" streams - better quality than RealAudio 3. XML menus so far ess likely to have problem when BBC updates web site. The additional features in AlienBBC 1. Categories, Schedule and Search menus for main stations "Listen Again". 2. Support for local radio and some regional radio which are still in RealAudio 3. easy access to BBC Podcasts. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49830 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

I hate to jump in to a long-running thread, but perhaps you can help me, bpa. I've installed the latest SlimServer 7.1 for Mac OSX (I have 10.5.4), installed the latest AlienBBC 2.01 for this SlimServer, and installed the iPlayer add-on v5. I have updated the firmware on the SqueezeBox. I can successfully see all the programmes, and can click them on the Mac and they look like they're playing - only no audio comes out of the SqueezeBox itself. The display says "now playing [programme]", but the clock is stuck on 00:00., although on the web interface on the Mac it's merrily ticking along as though it's playing. What am I doing wrong? I was having a problem with mplayer a while ago - is this likely to be the problem? Audio from my iTunes library plays without a problem, so the squeezebox is capable of playing stuff. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC addon to read iPlayer menus
Bpa, thanks for explanation of perl pages etc. Understood (I think). I've now had a good look just at the iPlayer menu of the latest Addon for 1.0.6/6.5, and here's some feedback as requested. The first two menu items, Radio 1 Listen Again and Radio 1 Xtra Listen Again, I don't use. Radio 2 Listen Again goes to All BBC Radio 2 Page 2, which leads to shows L-S only, then All BBC Radio 2 Page 3, which leads to the same set, and then shows A-K only. So shows S-Z missing from this set of menus. Radio 3 Listen Again goes to All BBC Radio 3 Page 2, which leads to shows N-W only, and then shows A-L, so this set of menus seems to include everything. Radio 4 Listen Again goes to All BBC Radio 4 Pages 2-6, which all lead to the same set of shows, B-F. Then shows A-B. So shows G-Z missing from this set of menus. Radio 5 Listen Again next, but I don't use it. Radio 6 Music Listen Again goes to All BBC Radio 6 Music Page 2, which leads to shows M-T, and then shows A-M. So shows T-Z missing from this set of menus. BBC7 Listen Again goes to All BBC7 Pages 2-4, which all lead to the same set of shows, C-J. Then shows A-C. So shows K-Z missing from this set of menus. Then a few more stations I don't use, then genre headings, which I also don't use, then A programmes, B programmes etc through Z and numerals - which seems the best way with this version to get to a show not on the lists above (assuming you know the title). So, it's patchy, but you can sort of get around it - and I guess it's all still down to how the BBC 'organise' (ha ha) this info at present. -- whitman whitman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9053 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49830 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

Sorry I forgot you were running 6.5 - The menu is called "iPlayer" I think. This is the only BBC menu that can be trusted to be up to date. In 6.5 The iPlayer menu content reflects the basic station content as provided by BBC iPlayer/Radio - Paginated, No categories, schedule or search. All menus still derive the info from BBC website but BBC is not reliably updating those web site menus which are not iPlayer. Thanks again for your 'blind' Addon for 1.06/6.5.x. I think this is going to be my reason, long awaited, to upgrade to 7.x. Anyway, not quite yet - and you asked for feedback. New Addon unzipped and installed fine. Alien BBC now works again, taking me to second level with iPlayer/Radio 2/Radio 2 A-Z/Radio 3/Radio 4/Radio 4 A-Z/Radio 4 Listen Again/Local Radio Stations/6 Music/BBC7/BBC 7 Weekly Archive/World Service/BBC Listen Again/BBC Podcasts/and then others that don't matter much to me. iPlayer on the second level is the least productive link, in that most links that it takes you to, Radio 2, Radio 3 etc, have only a small number of programmes before the list just stops. Radio 4 only covers programmes A-B, for example. The named-station 2nd level links are the most useful, although 'Radio 2' and 'Radio 2 A-Z' only list 6 or so programmes. The various Radio 4 ones are a bit hit and miss, too. The best ones here are 'Radio 4 A-Z' which looks like it has most programmes, and 'Radio 4 Listen Again' which looks like a duplicate of that. 'BBC Podcasts' gave me a 'no programmes found' message, but that doesn't matter to me personally as I don't use them. So, in summary, you have to really look around and find the best and fullest menus. Not ideal, but a useful stopgap. And so it looks like 7.0 or 7.1 for me soon! Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC addon to read iPlayer menus
Missing URLs are because BBC hasn't put RealAudio URLs up or has taken them down. It is not an AlienBBC problem. There seems to be three reasons 1. Programs not recorded - it will be shown as not available on BBC site. These programs should not even appear on AlienBBC menu. 2. Only Flash (secureMP3) audio on site - for UK listeners the BBC site will show audio as available (and hence on the AlienBBC menu for UK listeners) but will not work through AlienBBC which needs RealAudio. Non UK listeners will not see these items on their menu. 3. iPlayer programs are only available for 7 days. The BBC seems to take some programs down early (possible 12-18 hours early) so Loose ends and possibly the Archer omnibus may be missing for this reason. However they shouldn't appear on the menu in this case so they may be problem 2 type. The BBC sees these problem as bugs in their system and are working to solve them. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49830 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

Hi bpa, Thank you very much for writing iPlayer AddOn The lastest version is almost there, a few links don't work: Archers Omnibus >From the log: Plugins::Alien::Parsers::PlayableAodParser::parse (89) no url found for Archers Omnibus[08-08-16 12:52:38.4463] Loose Ends Plugins::Alien::Parsers::PlayableAodParser::parse (89) no url found for Loose Ends Baggage Plugins::Alien::Parsers::PlayableAodParser::parse (89) no url found for Baggage I guess these missing URLs might be caused by the BBC because they are rearranging the site. AlienBBC cannot detect the missing audio stream until the user goes to try to play the episodes and it is impractical to fetch every episode details to check audio availability before putting up the list of programs. It is a BBC problem. The users on the Reciva forum are complaining of the same issue and the Reciva users are using the XML interface not the web interface. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC addon to read iPlayer menus
Thanks to bpa and Matt's posts, I've figured out why I cannot play some recent listen again (have SC7.0/AlienBBC and AddOn v3). Looks like the particular ReadAudio streams I'm after are non-existent (i.e. the iplayer dial-up modem version's .ram is present but is zero bytes). So no chance of just pulling the stream by flashget either :-( AFAIK this is due to the beeb having some 'technical difficulties'. So I have some questions (vaguely related to the thread I guess)... - Anyone know how long this position will last (or any BBC resource/page/blog I can keep an eye on)? - Are they intending to retain support for .ra streams? - I assume I am in the same boat as everyone else, i.e. as long as keep up-to-date with bpa's addons, then I'm just then at the whim of the bbc. There was mention of V4 to fix some syntax errors in iplayer.opml - couldn't find it myself (having assumed uses xml/sgml syntax...) - hopefully these are causing the parser errors and not more bbc shenanigans. Like many others, I'm much indebted to bpa's work as we've a couple of sb3 used primarily for listen again. About a year ago NPR changed over from RealAudio to Flash and I went through the same hoops and looked at the RTMP/RTMPT/RTMPS protocols. Looking at the BBC protocol exchanges I got the feeling it wasn't quite the same. Anyway nothing can be done at the moment - I can hook in an existing player but I won't be writing one. Regarding AAC+ - again why waste more energy speculating. If it is plain AAC+ there is already a SC solution. If is "secure" in some way - there is no ready solution. No - that error usually signifies either a missing file, a typo in an opml file or an syntax error in one of the Addon files. The main possibility is an Addon file has been deleted/ corrupted. If the problem is local to a submenu or a single menu optopn You have used a bit of untested code in which case please hive detail of the submenu/menu/program option chosen Another possibility is a network timeout - try increasing Settings/Advanced/Radio Station Timeout to 30 or 45. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49830 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

Higher bandwidth means higher costs. The BBC is funded by UK public through the TV licence. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC addon to read iPlayer menus
1. The BBC have a bug in their system which is resulting in occasional programs not being recorded. I think this is one instance and not an indication that BBC is treating RealAudio as 2nd Class service. See 1st Aug blog http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2008/08/bbc_iplayer_radio_radio_3_prog.html 2. The BBC are moving away from RealAudio to better quality secure MP3 and eventually AAC+. The MP3 streams are UK onlyand they are MP3 audio encoding but a Flash proprietary transport and possibly encrpytion. AFAICT the only player is available from Adobe - there has been no incentive to reverse engineer. To play theMP3 stream through squeezecenter requires the following: 1. If user is not UK based - a UK proxy to handle a subset of bbc.co.uk addresses. This probably violates terms of use with BBC. 2. A copy of mozilla plugin for Flashplayer for your platform 3. A mozilla Plugin wrapper which can be used to set up stream decode and direct to a false audio output which can be captured. Currently the only wrapper (NSPLUGINWRAPPER) that could work is only available on Linux using ALSA. This will violate Adobe terms of use. Given the restrictions and the breaches in terms of use, I feel a solution cannot be provided publicly and so it is not worthwhile persuing this approach. As BBC says RealAudio will still be provided - AlienBBC will have to stay with this format. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49830 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC addon to read iPlayer menus
I've finally today updated to squeezecenter 7.1 (22170), and alienBBC 2.01, with Addon V3 for iPlayer. I appreciate that the bbc are regularly changing things at the moment, but I had a problem tonight, and dig a bit of digging which I thought might be useful. If I go to "Home > Alien BBC > BBC iPlayer Radio > All BBC Radio 4" and select Archive Hour - Sat, 02 Aug 2008 I get the following message on the squeezebox "error: No items found in playlist" http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/playlists/s7/qs/c0/0b/1900_bbc_radio_fourfm.ram and indeed if I wget that file on my server, or download via my browser it's zero sized. If I go to my browser on my laptop and go to the iPlayer site, and select the same article all works fine. however I don't have real player installed on my laptop. If I look in my squid proxy logs I can see this http request: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/4/mtis/stream/b00csq7s and if I look at that URL I see this: > > > > > identifier="mp3:secure/radio4/RBN2_2000_sat_b00csq7s_2008_08_02_20_12_50" > authString="daEbgbwc6aWb6bbbvcocYdfblbJdodHaFbv-biM228-cCp-HonFInEoNCoFoyG"/> > > > > http://www.bbc.co.uk"; > identifier="/radio/aod/playlists/s7/qs/c0/0b/1900_bbc_radio_fourfm" > href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/playlists/s7/qs/c0/0b/1900_bbc_radio_fourfm.ram"/> > > > > so it looks like there's a choice of mp3 or real, but that the real stream is broken? a netstat on my laptop (whilst the iPlayer is in action) shows a connection to 84.53.177.156:https (cp48186.edgefcs.net resolves to a couple of IP addresses of which that is one) but I'm not sure quite how the full URL is built up, or how the authString is used. is anyone looking into using these https/mp3 streams via the iPlayer addon for AlienBBC? & is there any more information I can give that would be of help? thanks Matt -- MattC MattC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4127 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49830 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

For me, it's an irreplaceable part. Very often, it IS Squeezebox for me. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC addon to read iPlayer menus
I've missed all this as I've been struggling setting up my 'server' properly over the past few weeks. Just put in the iPlayer Addon and it seems to work fine. That's great, thanks a lot! Reading this thread, I realise now why I suddenly couldn't find my favourite fix (Radio 3's 'Late Junction'). The iPlayer holds great promise, but also is a triple whammy for me this year: a) I use Linux ('nuff said elsewhere already!) b) I have Freesat, for which iPlayer is promised sometime this year c) and now this. Great work anyway, thanks again. Reading this very last makes me wonder about SlimNAS. My 'server' is a fanless brick with a VIA Epia M motherboard, just great for SC as it only uses a few watts. My struggles were because Ubuntu-server 8.04 didn't want to know it (kernel problem) and because of my crappy usb-cdrom. Eventually, I have settled for Debian Etch, which seems fine. I know 'if it's broke...' etc, but I'm intrigued. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC addon to read iPlayer menus
"low powered NAS" such as Linksys NLSU2, Linkstation, QNAP, Synology DS-101 etc. - memory and limited CPU processing power means 7,0 doesn;t run well on them and they best stay on 6.5. The current AlienBBC works by "screen scraping" which means taking a web page and taking elements from the page. The problem is if the web site design changes - the code has to be rewritten. The API provides the essential information (e.g. program name, description, URL) etc. in a formal defined way which means less maintenacne and usually quicker. The BBC have signalled they will be changing audio formats in the near future and so there will be more web changes whereas the API will remain constant. So maintenance will be less using API than "screen scraping". Because of changes in SC - the Alienbbc routine for 6.5 are different than for 7.x and so to keep Alienbbc 6.5 up to date will require updating old code ( which takes time to remember how the SS interfaces work) and also having old SS 6.5 systems ready on hand to test. So to keep both an 7.x and a 6.5 version current will mean doing code twice, testing twice and maintaining a working SC 7.x latest beta version, SC 7.x release version and SS 6.5 system as well as answering any questions/problems that follow a new release. A lot of extra effort and time used when there is limited time to do things. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49830 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

SC is very good at caching URLs and the result screen after parsing an URL. So if you replaced v2 by v3 and restarted SC within 300 secs (I thinks) of selecting the "Arthur Strong" programme - you will get the cached v2 response even though the v3 code is installed ! I didn't update the first page note as there are two small bugs in v3 that need to be fixed and I had hoped to have updated it by now.
