Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on OSX users - need help to prove/disprove problem

2008-02-23 Thread WhaleOil

If you have changed nothing else apart from the mplayer and it was
working before, then I think the problems are more likely at the BBC's
end rather than with your system. It may just be that the BBC's
servers are very busy at the weekend.

Rather than spending too long pulling your system apart and putting it
back together, I would be tempted to wait and see if it is any better
later.

Thanks, I did find it in the end but didn't make any difference. The SB3

I've tried deleting the Alien BBC plug in, re-installing it and

For the timeout in SC7

Settings/Advanced/Network/Radio Station Timeout.

Timeout problem happen most with live stations due to buffer filling in
mplayer - Try a "listen Again" as these will usually connect within 2-3
secs.

Trust me to be the kid in the class who can't do it right.

I downloaded from that new mplayer link and it seemed to find its way
automatically into local/usr/bin (joining my lame file).

Checking other radio streams and it all works and in stereo. ALIEN BBC
though now won't connect. Watching the right hand pane in SC7 the timer
goes to about 8 seconds and then back to 0 without connecting.

I've looked for a option to lengthen the time that it tries to connect
- I remember one in 6.5 - but can't find one.

BBC works through Staff Picks and Adam and Joe on BBC6 is in glorious
stereo.

Any ideas why Alien is not now happy? Thanks for finding the new
mplayer.

IIRC The mplayer.sh mod was only for AlienBBC 2.0. Standard installtion

mplayer.sh was modified not too long ago so that it could see mplayer
inside the build of MPlayer that was available from the .hu site.

I don't think anything easier than drilling down to find mplayer and
copying it into /usr/local/bin can be done by a user at present, but it
may be that mplayer.sh should have a further modification to allow for
the version you have.

Many thanks - the latest build of mplayer at the site you linked to
works perfectly with my G5 PowerPC. I can now join the happy bunnies
with stereo Alien BBC (and going back to the start of this thread, can
hear John Lennon just fine in the 'Kite sample').

By the look of it, this build seems to be a universal build that should
work with both PPC and Intel - but I cannot check this. If this is the
case, it would seem sensible to use this one for all mac users to avoid
confusion.

If it is of any help to others, I have installed mplayer manually in
usr/local/bin rather than installing the package that comes with the
download. This involves drilling down through the package to find the
mplayer file and copying it to the usr/local/bin directory.

I would be interested to know what the recommended approach is now and
whether a more simple installation of the package should work just as
well. I would be happy to test this out if it would be of any help.

Many thanks

For other users who want this new build of Intel mplayer, I think there

It doesn't seem obvious; indeed the link on the instructions section is

Also, should mplayerhq themselves be informed that their version is

2008-02-20 Thread bpa

I can't give specifics on OSX but it is strange that mplayer works on
other systems and not yours. Can you think of anything that could make
your system special/ different ?

In the meantime - I still think it is worth confirming that the new
mplayer actually got installed.

1. Delete the mplayer file (not the mplayer.sh file)
2. Try running mplayer from a Terminal as before - and make sure you
get an error such as "mplayer: command not found". If you still the
get the missing library error then something is not right.
3. Install Triode's new mplayer binary, make executable
4. Repeat step 2 exactly - same directory etc.

I think Triode is involved with 7.0 and Jive and it is a critical stage
getting ready for release so he has limited time at the moment.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on OSX users - need help to prove/disprove problem

2008-02-18 Thread sdhubbard

Curious. The instructions in my previous posting will test a freshly
downloaded mplayer with the Mr Kite sample. This test is independent of
any AlienBBC or Slimserver installation.

I've started Slimserver on my Mac and followed the instructions for
installing AlienBBC on
http://www.x2systems.com/AlienBBC/installation.html#mac

I moved the mplayer binary I tested yesterday from /Downloads to the
required /usr/local/bin location for AlienBBC. Everything all works
very well for me.

You can see the list of files that mplayer is using by starting
Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities and then starting mplayer.
While mplayer is active, select it in the Activity monitor window, then
clicking the Inspect button. In the window that opens, select the Open
Files and Ports tab.

Here's the list of open files I get from my mplayer while listening to
Radio 4:

/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server
/usr/local/bin/mplayer
/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework/Versions/A/OpenAL
/usr/X11/lib/libfreetype.6.3.16.dylib
/usr/X11/lib/libfontconfig.1.1.0.dylib
/usr/lib/libexpat.1.5.0.dylib
/System/Library/Extensions/IOHIDFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOHIDLib.plugin/Contents/MacOS/IOHIDLib
/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-023501.csstore
/usr/lib/dyld
/private/var/db/dyld/dyld_shared_cache_i386
/dev/null
/Users/steve/Library/Logs/slimserver.log
/Users/steve/Library/Logs/slimserver.log

In your error message, the problem seems to be caused by a missing X11
library.

The name of the file is different to the one that I see. However, when
I open a Finder window on the /usr/X11/lib directory, I see a file
called /usr/X11/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib, which is an alias, pointing to
/usr/X11/lib/libfreetype.6.3.16.dylib. There is also an alias to the X11
folder, called X11R6, in the /usr folder. So on my system a reference to
/usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib will actually open the file
/usr/X11/lib/libfreetype.6.3.16.dylib.

Could you open a Finder window of the /usr directory to see what is in
there? To do this, go to the Finder, then use shift-command-G to go to
a particular folder and type /usr. If the 6.3.16 file is present you
could attempt to create an alias to it called libfreetype.6.dylib. To
create an alias, select the item you wish to create an alias to and
type command-L. Creating any necessary aliases should at least fix the
'missing library' error.

Steve

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on OSX users - need help to prove/disprove problem

2008-02-17 Thread sdhubbard

To see the version number and the other information about mplayer, you
need to run the program from the Terminal.

First, double click on the mplayer_intel_osx.zip file to expand it.
This gives you a file, simply called mplayer, in the same directory as
the .zip file. Assuming you're using Leopard, the .zip will be by
default in the ~/Downloads/ directory (the ~ is shorthand for your home
directory, or /Users/shortname_of_your_account/).

Now, open the Terminal application and another window containing the
mplayer file. Drag mplayer to the Terminal window - this brings up the
exact location where the file is stored on your system. Without typing
anything in the Terminal, find and drag the kitesample.ra file you
downloaded previously to the same Terminal window (it is probably in
the same directory as mplayer). Then click once in the Terminal window
to activate it, and press return. The music will then play, and you'll
see all the version and other information that mplayer produces when it
runs from the Terminal.

That should be the new one - does it give the same version number as in

Triode

Thank you for this. I tried this version of mplayer and (perhaps
unsurprisingly) it didn't work with my G5 PPC - I got an error message
saying I had a 'Bad CPU type'. This seemed a bit harsh - it's old but
not that bad :)

Anyway, is there any hope of a fix for a version that works for us with
older macs (apart from buying a new mac)?

Many thanks for all of your help

Another point, that maybe someone like bpa might be able to pick up on:

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on OSX users - need help to prove/disprove problem

2008-02-10 Thread danco

As far as I am aware, the only difference between the two versions of
mplayer.sh is that the newer one will find mplayer if MPlayer OS X is
installed in the Applications folder while the old one will not.

So there's no reason to revert to the older mplayer.sh, so long as you
either move (my suggestion) or rename (Triode's suggestion) MPlayer OS
X.

I agree with Triode's advice, but I am not entirely sure (and he does
not say) what the permissions and ownership should be.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on OSX users - need help to prove/disprove problem

2008-02-10 Thread Triode

Easiest solution would be:

1. Delete /usr/local/bin/mplayer
2. Install Triode's mplayer into /usr/local/bin - setting permissions
and ownership as necessary (it will need unzipping)
3. Move the MPlayer installed in /Applications to another name so the
mplayer.sh included in Alien 2.0 does not find it - it should then find
the mplayer in /usr/local/bin. Do this by renaming
/Applications/MPlayer OSX.app to something else.
4. Restart the server

Whitmans,

As I said before, you are a special case. You have mplayer installed in
the /usr/local/bin for the original AlienBBC 1.6 installation and also
MPlayer installed in the standard installation which is used in
AlienBBC 2.0.

This is not typical.

I think you should do the following but a real Mac user should comment
first.
1. Revert back to the original (1.6) mplayer.sh - make sure ownership
and permissions are correct.
2. Delete /usr/local/bin/mplayer
3. Install Triode's mplayer into /usr/local/bin - setting permissions
and ownership as necessary.

What do you actually have in Applications? mplayer (a Unix file) or
MPlayer OS X (a Mac program with mplayer hidden deep inside it)? If the
latter, the simplest way to make mplayer.sh ignore it would be to move
it out of the top level of the Applications folder. It could go into
your home folder, into a subfolder of Applications, or wherever you
wanted.

If you download the version Triode has supplied, it is best put into
/usr/local/bin.

Once again I remind you and others that, although this folder is
normally invisible, it can be seen by using the Go to Folder item of
the Go menu of the Finder. Just type /usr ito the dialog box and press
Return and you get a window showing /usr from which you can go to any
subfolder in the normal way.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on OSX users - need help to prove/disprove problem

2008-02-09 Thread sdhubbard

For me, the clip played fine in Real Player.

No vocals at all using mplayer though. The version was

MPlayer dev-SVN-r21482-4.0.1 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team
CPU: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz (Family: 6, Model:

CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 SSE SSE2

Running under OS X 10.5.1 (Core Duo iMac)

The binary used was the Intel binary in the Mplayer OS X package,
version 1.0rc1.

About the '.ram' extension on the sample: mine acquired that too when I
downloaded it to the desktop. I simply deleted the '.ram' part.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on OSX users - need help to prove/disprove problem

2008-02-09 Thread bpa

Whaleoil,
Correct - the bug is one channel out of both speakers. Not mono which
is a mixture of two channels - the same coming out of both speakers.

The sample is unusual in that singing is only on one channel.

Danco,
The file on the server has no "ram" extension. I don't know where it
is being added.

Triode,
Audio drivers shouldn't matter as the problem first showed up when
playing through a SB3 - the audio output shouldn't any OS drivers since
it is a WAV output.

Is it possible to host your build of 1.0rc2 as mplayerhq still has the
old 1.0rc1 (aka SVN-r21482-4.0.1 ) build.

I've just built mplayer from the latest svn tree on my macbook and this
works - so suggests there is a bug in the version which is hosted on

There is one point that may make a difference as regards those who get
no sound at all. It should not be relevant for those who (unlike me)
only get sound on one channel.

The instructions say that one should enter

... kitesample.ra

in the Terminal window.

But the file I got by downloading is NOT named kitesample.ra.

Its name is kitesample.ra.ram

Whale Oil, to find version number, open Terminal and just type

mplayer (followed by Return, of course).

You get a bunch of lines that begin with the version information.

I was surprised that I have the same version of mplayer as those who

Thanks Danco,

Very strange - you have same version of mplayer and as user with
problem. Processors are slightly different- so perhaps there is an
difference in processor instructions sets.

I have on a few occasion using AlienBBC noticed that only one channel
seemed to be playing, but I put that down to a glitch in the

[SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on OSX users - need help to prove/disprove problem

2008-02-07 Thread bpa

Need help from OSX/AlienBBC users to test if mplayer for OSX has a bug
where it only plays one stereo channel out of both channels.
The test involves running a test file (30sec clip of Beatles "Benefit
of Mr. Kite") with mplayer in a Terminal window. The vocals in this
clip are only on channel.

THE TEST.
1. Download and save in a known directory the file kitesample.ra from
here: http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/kitesample.ra
If you have Realplayer installed - test that you can play the file OK.
2. Open Terminal window and run mplayer as follows. This command assume
kitesample.ra is in the current directory.
MPLAYER KITESAMPLE.RA
3. If you do not hear John Lennon singing - report failure with
processor type, OSX version and mplayer version.
4. If you hear John Lennon singing try the following commands

MPLAYER -AF CHANNELS=2:2:0:0:0:1 KITESAMPLE.RA
MPLAYER -AF CHANNELS=2:2:1:1:1:0 KITESAMPLE.RA

Report with which command did you hear the John Lennon vocal as well as
processor OSX version and mplayer version

Thanks.

BACKGROUND
In this thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43016 -
Whitman noticed the problem and after running through the
possibilities, mplayer on his system only plays one channel. Mplayer
is standard build from mplayerhq. Whitman's system is an Intel OSX
10.4.11, user Braidy added that he has the same problem on a PPC OSX
10.4.11 system.
