Not viable for my specific use, but may be useful for others using
Audible on Windows -

Audible for Windows
TuneBlade for Windows
Shairtunes 2 plugin

A sort of poor man's Airplay to any squeezebox player

Probably way off beam Is there any way the now playing controls
(stop, rewind, etc) can be modified when the file is an Audiobook?

For example the skip back and forward controls on Audiobook players are
the broken arrow circles.

Maybe the genre tag (Audiobook) for the file could be used?

Just a thought.

Thanks for the hint. This is so because there is no "spoken word" flag
in the metadata of mp3 tags and the genre values are of course language
dependant. Otherwise the plugin would do nothing after the install
before you define the genres in the settings.
Which perhaps would have been a better default behaviour. I will change
this.

For now i updated the description text of the plugin. Perhaps this also
helps to avoid confusion if somebody installs the plugin and does not
look in the settings.

A few more notes:

I am aware that my plugin could be useful for people with disabilities
and also to build a device for children, who then just need to press a
button (see below).

@All: Please let me know if there are things which i can approve or if
you find bugs (i am not an experienced developer for the squeezeserver.
I wrote the plugin simply because there wasn't an existing one and i
needed it because i listen to a lot of radio plays).

I put some work in the plugin to make it also usable for streaming
services, because these days you can find a lot of audio books on
Spotify, Qobuz etc., but none of the native apps of the streaming
services (with the exception of Audible which is unusable on a
squeezebox anyway) have a bookmark feature.

With a Squeezebox Radio you can assign playlists to the six buttons left
and right from the display. When using remote files you need to manually
once when you first start the playlist (with the context menu). I never
found a way to do this automatically in the plugin, because there is no
genre information for remote tracks. And i presume nobody wants
automatic bookmarks for music albums :-)
I _love_ this device more than any other electronic item in my
household.

If you have some scripting knowledge or you like to build things
yourself there are two other usecases for the plugin:

1) If you use a Squeebox Radio or Boom you can also use the KidsPlay
plugin to get a "Sleeping aid" setup, where you just need to press a
single button by adding macros for the Preset-Buttons (On the Radio
these are the buttons left and right from the screen).

I described this here:
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?102859-New-plugin-for-audio-bookmarks=865785=1#post865785

You can start a bookmarked playlist without even looking at the radio:
* Create a playlist from local files and/or albums from streaming
services (There are a lot of audio books on Spotify, Qobuz etc.)
* Create macros for 2 buttons as described in the thread mentioned
above

The first button starts the playback and sets a sleep timer. The second
button "freezes" the bookmark at the current position.
So you start the playback with the button, fast forward to the position
where you fall asleep in the last night and then you press the second
button to update the bookmark and freeze it again.

When you are just listening you can also press the second button when
you notice that the sleep timer kicks in (The volume fades out). This
will reset the timer and update the bookmark.

2) And if you built a squeezebox yourself with Philippes remarkable
ESP32 implementation of Squeezelite or an raspberry pi with
PiCorePlayer, you can add buttons for your device as well with Pippins
SqueezeButtonPi tool (which also allows to execute CLI commands by
button presses).

I tried it with a Pi Zero and the headphone amp from Pimoroni (which has
a tiny display and 4 buttons) and it works. But i never got around to
build an actual device - it is one thing to cobble together some
hardware + software and scripts and it is another thing to build an
actual good looking device with a case :->

Okay user test.

Click on Bookmarks menu item
Artwork covers for books appear
Click on book cover. (not the three dot menu)
Display stays on bookmark page but audio is actually playing

Would it be possible to switch to Now Playing page when cover is
clicked?

This would reduce the number of clicks to get to the Playing page.

I can see a situation where automatic bookmarking isn’t enough. It
requires that you press Stop. What if you fall asleep?
Having the ability to manually create a bookmark gives you a fallback.

But the bookmarking is automatic. Even starting from a bookmark is My
Apps -> Bookmarks -> Select book. Not sure how it could get easier? You
originally mentioned that there was no 'add bookmark' button in
material, but with this plugin its not required. Automatic bookmarking
would seem easier, and more logical, than an add bookmark button anyway.
And even if a button was added, you'd still need a way to start from
the bookmark - which this plugin also makes easy.

So, I'm not sure what else you are expecting? Unless you are stating
that using LMS is hard because of these conditions - of which I have no

Not sure how - unless you mean giving the books a specific genre. The
bookmarks plugin automatically saves a bookmark for albums of a genre.
So, set MP3's genre to Audiobooks, configure plugin to bookmark for
'Audiobooks', play MP3, stop playback, navigate Apps->Bookmarks, book
should be listed and clicking will resume where left off. Seems simple
enough to me.

Which "podcast bookmark" plugin?

The bookmarks plugin I found seems to automatically bookmark - and you
can set which genre to bookmark. So, if a book was downloaded as an MP3
set its genre to (e.g.) 'Audiobook' and configure this plugin for that
genre, then it will automatically bookmark. Then when you replay it
should start from there. This sounds like it meets the requirements?

I think there may be crossed wires. Earlier castalla was saying that
he’d downloaded audible file to Mp3 (decrypted) but bookmarking them
wouldn’t work - unsurprising as they aren’t podcasts per se just regular
files.
The podcast bookmark plugin expects an RSS feed of the stuff to be
played doesn’t it which I guess is what you’ve tested.

I've installed the plugin, but unsure how to really use it. It -seems-
to automatically remember the last track+pos of an album. When I start

all automatic - so not sure what Material is expected to do?

Adding an 'add bookmark' button to the now-playing would be easy enough.
I've never used this plugin before, so not sure how it works. Will
install and investigate.

I -guess- if there is a simple way to know if a track (I assume this is
what audio books appear as) has a bookmark then to add a 'play from last
pos' menu entry, or a 'skip to bookmark' on now-playing should be
doable.

Thanks for chipping in!

It's essentially that there's no bookmark symbol on the now playing
screen (material) and setting a bookmark involves several steps. Then
she has to remember to 'get' the bookmark from the extras menu (if I
recall correctly) to get back to where she stopped listening.

I guess I'm just expecting too much from what is a great system. 6

Another approach:

I created a Kindle paperwhite stream to my picoreplayer via Bluetooth.
This gives an audio stream favourite to any squeezebox player.

Works, although there's the expected noticeable delay when pausing and
starting.

One plus is that there seems little impact on the kindle's battery
compared to smartphones.

...

Another possibility which works. Use Audible player on Windows and
redirect to 'airplay' squeezeboxes via Tuneblade. Latency is almost
non-existent here. Reasonably priced Windows tablets are thin on the
ground so not so practical.

Alexa-related stuff. Amazon thinks I should use Amazon.DE for that,
believe it or not. Audible is therefore not even shown in my Alexa app
as something that can be added. Amazon likes to pigeonhole people. Very
annoying

Google “aptoide” it is supposed to be able to make an Android tablet
work in Android Auto mode but the Huawei is a little esoteric and I see
won’t upgrade beyond Android 8. Good luck

It has to be a Huawei M5 lite. Phones are just too fiddly for her to

I think you can make virtually any recent Android tablet work in car
mode. If you can then you could just use it conjunction with any BT
speaker.

What gear do you have at your disposal?

Just tried this... Looks promising interface-wise but so far nothing
actually plays. Need to investigate further...

Material with large fonts gets close to the above car mode.

The big problem with using lms and mp3 files is there isn't an
intuitive/easy way to bookmark. She tried with the bookmark plugin but
it quickly descended into chaos and frustration.

I'd like to thank you all for your suggestions.

(One thing I've learned from all is just how poorly served the disabled
are by existing IT structures and software designs).

Thanks for the suggestion.

Essentially, because my wife is experiencing significant sensory/vocal
problems, I'm looking for the most basic control interface.

Here's what car mode looks like in android audible

This would be perfect if only Amazon/Audible got their act together to
play to Echos

Possibly worth a look... But audible files have to be 'processed' to get
an mp3 version. Adds another complication into what should be easy.

A further pricey option would be to get an apple ipad and just airplay
to Philippe's shairport players.

As far as I can tell Sonos is the only streaming system which has
Audible

Have I got this right?
Is it correct that Audible allows mp3 download?
The LMS Podcast feature allows bookmarked start/stop but needs an RSS
feed?

Why not create your own RSS feed. You would need some web space locally
to store the mp3's and then a simple XML file that references them
Then you would "subscribe" the LMS Podcast feature to that feed.

Google "create rss feed"

An update on my quest to find a user accessible way to play audiobooks:

The suggestion to use voice commands to control Echo playback certainly
works for the able-voiced. It's much less successful for someone
suffering from voice defects. So my search continued...

On certain versions of the android Audible app (not all?) the now
playing screen pops up a 'Connect to a device' option (somewhat
deceptively similar to the Spotify feature to play on other devices).

There's one huge BUT with this promising-looking feature It only
allows a switch to Sonos devices.!!

After several chats with Audible agents they finally agreed that only
Sonos devices worked.

How crazy can it get? Amazon's Audible app can play to Sonos but not
to Amazon's Echos...

I think I'm fighting a losing battle here

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] An appeal - and a short story about Audible

2021-10-16 Thread castalla

Audible seem stuck in the past with device compatability - there are no
plugins for anything. Sonos seems the only outfit with a native
app/service.

There are a couple of specialist devices for visually impaired - cost
about 500 squids.

My wife finds smartphone/tablets difficult to use, so the Sonos is a
good solution.

A squeezebox plugin would be the ideal solution for her, and I'm sure
there'd be many others who would welcome it.

I suggested to Audible to support squeezebox but given it's viewed as
defunct in the wider world I guess nothing will happen there either.

There's a car mode for the Audible app which is good but the battery
drain/recharging routine involved with mobiles makes them rather
impractical for someone confined to bed or wheelchair.

I have never used Audible, but I believe that it can create its books in
mp3 format for use on mp3 only players.

But that wouldn't help you to bookmark and restart at the last listening
point.

But the podcast plugin does allow restarting at last listening point.
Any chance of Audible providing an 'RSS podcast feed' of the purchased
books ?

No ? I thought not. Oh well.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] An appeal - and a short story about Audible

2021-10-16 Thread castalla

A while ago I acquired a Sonos Connect (linked to a Bluetooth
transmitter) so my better-half (now bed-ridden through illness) can
easily listen to Audible audiobooks. On/off control achieved via IKEA
sound remote. Simples.

A couple of weeks ago (after only 2 months of use) the Connect crashed
out. It has since been replaced under warranty.
An expensive solution to my problem - but I'm not convinced about Sonos
quality control these days.

However, this episode set me off again searching for an easy alternative
to Sonos. The only other viable options are the paperwhite kindle and
echos. Voice commands are really clunky for Audible! And my wife gets
too confused to use them.

So, why not use the brilliant picoreplayer Bluetooth feature to play
Audible? Yes, with one big Snag ... All books have to be converetef to
mp3 and critically lose the ability to bookmark and restart at last
listening point.

My appeal! Is there anyone who could take-on the task of an Audible
plugin?

Regards to all.
