Hi, I've just installed SqueezeDisplay on my Amazon Fire TV stick and I have two feature requests: 1. Add an option to automatically start "Squeeze Player" or "SB Player" 2. Add an option to disable last.fm images or only show them with a minimum resolution. I have similar problems since the update. The app frequently crash and if the composer-tag is available it shows me as the interpret. So lastfm often can't find any other information. After updating to the new version, I face numerous problem. Nothing else has changed in my setup: 1. Squeeze display will start and stay stuck in connecting to touch 2. Touching the blank album art area will load the cover art in LMS, but no info like artist name, album title nor song title. 3. Track changes did not update squeeze display. 4. Squeeze display shows info of the previous track played. Yes, it's caused by an API change on LastFM side:

They have removed ability to get a list of artist images but the good
news is that they at least still allows you to retrieve a single artist
image and a single album image.
The plan is that I'll publish a new version later this week which cycles
through a single artist image and a single album image. Hopefully they
will keep the possibility to at least retrieve a single image also in
the future.

I just installed Squeeze Display and this was one of the most complicated software installation i ever did: 1) I bought a cheap chinese tablet pc (Odys Loox) and installed Squeeze Display on it 3) I installed a DOS Emulator (based on DosBox) and on this a copy of my all-time favourite peace of software. It's called El-Fish (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El-Fish) from the russion company Animatek. This is a beautiful old DOS Program which i bought in the early nineties that displays a simulated aquarium. 4) I rooted the tablet and installed an SSH daemon. 5) I removed the case, ripped of a few unnecessary parts like touch screen layer, battery etc. and installed display and board in a picture frame. 5) I am not familiar with Android so i searched for Android commands to control applications (/system/bin/am) and to control the standby mode remotely (/system/bin/input keyevent). Then i wrote a bash script which controls the tablet by sending commands to the SSH shell on the tablet. It uses the Squeezeserver CLI (via the netcat command) to switch to Squeeze Display whenever a new album is played and goes back to El-Fish after a time. It also puts the tablet after some time into sleep mode when no album is played because this saves a couple of watts power consumption. Now i am listening to one of my favourite peaces of music, the Nocturnes by Frédéric Chopin, played by the wonderful Elisabeth Leonskaja. It's awesome - the quiet music, the virtual fish tank and the app from Erland that displays photographs of the pianist. Hi Erland, this sounds great, unfortunately the description says it will only run on android 2.3.7 and up. This precludes anything I've got. Is there anyway to get this to run on older versions? The most recent I have is 2.2. There are a number of inexpensive tablets that have older versions such as 2.0 or 1.8, is there anyway this can run on them? I've installed this on my Xoom WiFi (running ICS) and it won't find any players. I suspect this is because I'm not using the default port (I'm using 9000) and my server is password protected. I tried specifying the server as remote and put the port at the end (peter:9001), but I still get no players found. Is there a way to get it to work in this configuration? It doesn't support password protected servers, only way to get it to
work is to remove the password from your server configuration.

I've been using this for a while and really like the ability to easily see what's playing and a variety of artwork. Much more stable in the current version. Would it be possible to have an option to select what tag you want to use for picking the artwork? For instance, I just added the latest Shins album and it has The Shins as Album Artist and James Mercer as Composer. Currently the priority is:
- artist
- band
- conductor
- composer
- albumartist
- trackartist
The reason albumartist is so low is becuase there is this special
Various Artist entry which always is set on my compilation album and
that string is really useless for finding images. So if you would have
set the ARTIST tag it would behave correctly.
I could prioritize ALBUMARTIST higher and have an exception for the
string Various Artists, the issue is just that it's localized in
SBS/LMS so there is a different string depending on which language you
have configured in SBS/LMS.

Hmm... one more odd thing: when playing some online resource (internet radio or music on demand service like MOG) when I start the app would result in a constant radio tower icon. But I do like it to show something when it's in the dock, because that

Kind of let the apps interact, so when something is playing on the
Squeezebox it shows Squeeze Display and when it's not playing it
automatically switch to RSS Photo Show and vice versa.

show images from artists from your complete library when nothing is
playing. That would result in a personal image slide show.
Or maybe show images for the artists played during the last week or
something similar.
Does anyone else have some cool idea regarding what you would like to
see on your tablet when nothing is playing on the Squeezebox and the
tablet is in the docking station ?

Not sure I'd like to get into this area as I'm a bit afraid that it
will result in a lot of work for something I don't use myself.

Do you mean showing the station logo or something else ? I mean show artwork like Radiotime aka Tunein does FWIW: I've been playing with the thought of doing this as a server side plugin. I did it for a local station to start with. But in my experience it's not easy to do right, and last.fm probably isn't the best solution for this. Eg. the key for an artist is his name. There's not much you can do if you happen to have an artist with a non unique name. There's a rather popular pop band in Switzerland called Pegasus. And they didn't do their homework when choosing that name. There's another one in Germany, doing power metal. And a hardcore band. The biography is for the Swiss group, while most pictures are for the hardcore band etc. The good news is that TuneIn does provide this feature in their API. Erland - if you're interested in my Perl code for this feature, let me know. Your app just caused me to fix tags on about 90% of my Rolling Stones tracks. apk format directly at the moment, so you have to download the zip,
unzip it and make the apk file accessible to Kindle Fire in a suitable
way.
Does Kindle Fire support installation of an apk directly from a web
page ?
Users which have access to Google Play (Android Market) should get it
from there.
By the way, the 1.1.0 version seems to be available on Google Play
(Android Market) now.

It picks the first player it finds, if you want to be sure it always
picks the right one, if you have multiple servers running, it might be
a good idea to go into the settings page and specify exactly which one
you want.

removes any low resolution images from the list, the removal logic is
dependent on the size of the image on the tablet display, so it will be
different in horizontal and vertical mode and it will be different

When I tested it myself I first included all images but I realized that
low resolution images doesn't look that good on a 1280x800 screen, so I
decided to skip images which have less than a quarter of the resolution
that will be used to show the image on the screen. So if the image will
be 1280x600 on the screen it means that it will only include images
which on LastFM have at least a resolution of either 320 pixels
horizontally or 150 pixels vertically.
Do you have any idea approximately how many images it showed for Sting
on your device ?
I've also thought about showing the images in random order, currently
they are showed in exactly the same order as returned from LastFM but
it's random which image it starts with when a new artist is shown.

Less quality as in less pixels or not that interesting image? In the case of Sting I'd rather think that older pictures got more votes over time, thus rank higher in popularity. But most of them are rather old, dating back from the 90s even 80s. Do you have any means to track the images in order to build up a black list of URLs? I know that sometimes last.fm would return 1x1 pixel images too. Over time I've started to create a list of images I want to ignore in my plugin. Not very efficient, obviously. But it's improving over time. I can't seem to get it to work entering a remote server either name or IP address when I'm at work. Cool. Two comments: - Any plans to add support for internet radio artwork? - It might be interesting to combine this with some sort of screensaver dock mode. I've now released a 1.1.0 version, should appear in a few hours or so,
the changes are:
- Ignore dummy images that tells you to clean tags.
- Automatically adding 9000 as port for remote server if port isn't
specified in field.
- Images are shuffled each time a new list of artist images is
retrieved to create some variation.
- Standard album cover is now shown initially when a new album is
played.
- Added possibility to get either 100 most popular images or 100 newest
images, 100 newest images is now default.
- Corrected crash that occurred when no images had been loaded yet.

Not sure I understand exactly what you mean.

Another featuring breaking the logic in the app: K'naan feat. Nelly Furtado. Heh... this morning's program is full of those exceptions: third in a row. This time the the case: bianca story returns nothing, is known as the bianca story on last.fm. I just checked the api: while getImages wouldn't return anything, the getInfo query would return information for the bianca story, including some artwork. [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Squeeze Display for Android
The free Squeeze Display app is now available for download from Google
Play (Android Market):

It's an application primarily for people who have an android tablet
available which they want to use as a Now Playing screen for their
Squeezebox. The unique feature is that it shows continuously switching
artist images from LastFM, which IMHO is a lot more interesting than
showing the same album art every time a specific track/album is
played.
The only available settings is to select which player to show and
possibility to specify a remote server if it can't be automatically
discovered.
The current version does not support mysqueezebox.com and does not
support password protected Squeezebox Server/Logitech Media Server
setups, but this is something I might consider adding if there is an
interest.
It works in both landscape and portrait orientation but my experience
so far is that portrait looks best as the artist images tends to be a
bit small in landscape.
I did this app primarily because I wanted to learn some Android
development and wanted to have some use for Android tablet when I'm not
holding it in my hand.
It's intentionally limited to just show what's playing and doesn't
offer any control or browse functionality. If you try it and want to
have some simple control functionality let me know what you would like
and why you would like it.
