Unfortunately Sprocket never recived much attention when it was released
- although I see 0.4 has been downloaded 86 times. Don't think the
plugin author had much time or inclination to maimtain it.

The combination of the LMS podcast plugin & Material Skin is pretty good
though & allows you to search for & subscribe to podcasts.

I gave up using sprocket some time ago and switched to the podcasts
plugin.

Oops, yeah I only listen to this one podcast on the Squeezebox but after
upgrading I tried with another, and obviously they have different
behaviors.

Nothing substantial changed in this area in 0.4, but I'm glad to hear
its working for you.

Because this plugin relies on streaming downloads of the podcast files
(nothing is locally cached), functions like progress information and
resume depend on the web server that's delivering the podcast file
(accurate content length, support for range requests). Things like
connection timeout aggressiveness also come into play. Most podcast
hosting providers seem provide everything required, but there may be
some that don't. I don't have a sense of how common these features are
across the larger podcast ecosystem, though all the podcasts I
personally follow fully support these features.

So I suspect you may be seeing a change in how your particular podcast
is hosted by its provider, or maybe you're testing with a different
podcast this time?

If you're like me and can't remember how to install/update manually a
plugin:

Go to LMS GUI, settings>information
Look for the plugins folder line, find the path ending In "Plugins", but
not the folder with "cache" in the path or "sbin"
For me on Ubuntu it's /usr/share/squeezeboxserver/Plugins (I mistakenly
put it in /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/Plugins)
Unzip Sprocket in said folder, restart the LMS service

2020-11-25 Thread AxxelH

OK, thanks for the followup. I'm a little surprised this ever worked
without a paid subscription (or lifetime access from a prior purchase),
but I realize now that's not called out in the original post. There was
some discussion of folks trying it without a sub earlier in the thread,
but I was unaware it actually worked.

I assume then that the change here is that PocketCasts is being more
clear about its enforcement of access to the APIs backing the web
player, which seems fair to me.

I've updated the original post to call out the requirement for Plus, and
left version 0.4 as the downloadable version, as that's the version I'm
using myself.

Just wanted to report that version 0.2 works well for me now that I have
taken out a paid subscription. If anything it seems to work better than
previously, as I now get artwork & a progress bar on my SB Radio -
pretty sure that didn't appear before. The only issue is that the time
displayed for a podcast is sometimes innacurate, which I think has been
reported in another thread.

Not sure it'll be any more appealing to you, but there is a 12 months
for the price of 10 offer, if you pay for a year in advance. I probably
wouldn't have bothered paying if it meant registering my details on yet
another website but it was easy on my phone, as I have a card registered
with the Play Store already & that takes care of the payments. Will give
it a few months to see how often I use it.

Tried version 0.4 but I'm getting the same messages in the log, 401
unauthorised.

When I log into play.pocketcasts.com there is a pop-up message saying it
looks like I have a free account & that the web player is part of Pocket
Casts Plus. Wondering if Sprocket only works now with paid subsriptions,
I might upgrade later to see if it makes any difference.

OK, I've uploaded version 0.3 to the original post with error logging
in the HTTP response handler. This is what is failing before messages
like "Failed to get podcast subscription list.".

I expect this is just the beginning of what will be needed with
additional logging, but it's a place to start. If you have the problem
please try it out, I'm expecting new logs of something starting with
"API response error: "

Thanks for reporting this, 0.3 should fix this, but I believe its
unrelated to the more general network errors.

That's correct, I can log in or out & the changes are reflected in the

AFAIK there's nothing cached between LMS versions that would affect

I only recently discovered how easy it is to find & subscribe to

Thanks for getting back. I've triple checked the UN and PW, also the PW
is nothing complex, a mix of upper/lower case letters and numbers, 8
characters long. I'm in the UK, running LMS on a Win10 machine. So
nothing that peculiar as far as I can tell.

If anything springs to mind let me know and I'll give it a go.

Thanks.

This indicates the server failed to allow the login, possibly because
the username or password was mistyped. Please check this first, when the
login is successful you will no longer see a password field in the
settings page.

That said, one other user had an issue with logins that was never
tracked down. Since the plugin works for some users it seems to be
something specific to the account, or possibly some problem in the
plugin for how it handles encoding the password request.

Unfortunately, I can't really debug that remotely. Is there anything you
can think of that might be unusual about your account? For example:
- Is your password especially complex (non alphanumeric? unusual
symbols?)
- Where are you located (I'm US, not its possible this a difference in
accounts outside the US).

The plugin doesn't attempt to deal with published or air dates at all. I
can add that as a feature request, but I'll be honest that its unlikely,
date parsing and presentation localization are a pain and many podcasts
are episodic in ways that don't map to air dates.

I suspect you are seeing some air dates in "up next" because many
podcasts with a strong sense of "air date" include the date in their
titles anyway (NPR news feeds, for example).

Hi,
I tried to manually install this plugin on my Win 10 machine (path
C:\Program Files (x86)\Squeezebox\server\Plugins\Sprocket).

LMS seems to find it OK after a re-start as it appears in the
settings/plugins page.

When I go to settings, I put in my pocketcast email and PW, pressing
enter or apply, seems to take the details although the PW box is now
blank.

The problem I have is when I try to access the plugin from
myapps/sprocket, I get this message: "Login to Pocket Casts from plugin
settings."

So it looks like the login has failed. Anyone else had this problem, is
it something to do with me running LMS on a Win MC?

BTW I have a paid for pocket cast account.

Steve

The only missing information on the episodes list is the airing date on

Weirdly the "up next list" has it.

Just wanted to say "thank you" to AxxelH for this plugin!

Use PocketCasts all the time on my phone, great to have available on the
Squeezebox and have one place to organise everything.

I'm not a premium member but purchased PocketCasts many years ago,
before it went free to use.
The plugin worked immediately once logged in from settings page on LMS
7.9.2.
'Up next' takes a bit of time but gets there! Everything else is
reasonably snappy.

Again, good work!

Not sure what was up with the login input. Other options/toggles on the

The transcoding is done to allow variable playback speed. Technically
its not required at 1x, but it simplifies things to have a single code
path for all speeds and since I personally always use it at higher
speeds I favored that case.

(Might take a bit, since I have currently trouble with my 4G based

One other question:
I noticed that when playing a Podcast through your PlugIn, the (mp3?)
stream gets transcoded to a high bitrate PCM stream.
That workload seems to be too much for my little Pi Zero based LMS
server.

Is there a way to not use transcoding?

The plugin streams the podcast from the source server using the standard
LMS HTTP streaming support. Nothing is bulk downloaded. I have not
checked, but I would assume this is the same basic mechanism used by the
built-in podcast support.

I have not seen problems with connection timeouts in the podcasts I

My main reason for looking for another Podcast solution than the std LMS
one is the timeout you get with some Podcasts.

Potentially - as I understand - because the server closes down when not

I would like to try this plugin as well, but have trouble installing
it:
I have LMS running on a PiZero within pCP; the only place i see were I
can put it is:
/usr/local/slimserver/Cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins
(the non-cache plugin folders seem not to exist in the pCP system?)
When I restart LMS, the plugin is available, but I get a notification I
need to update the plugin by restarting LMS.
When I do that, the plugin is gone again

Any hints / ideas?

I have been hoping for a Pocket Casts plugin forever.

Up until now I kind of made it work using shairtunes and airdroid, but
it was a pain.

This is so much better.

THANK YOU !!!

Is it really thousands? Or is it roughly one per song you play from a
different source? The latter is expected, you're just seeing debug
logging that happens when the plugin sees a changed song change to a
non-Pocket Cast song. Its explicitly removing its hooks (if needed).

Right now the default log level of the plugin is DEBUG, which helps me
if you encounter a problem. You can change the level this in server
settings -> logging for the (plugin.sprocket) item to something less
noisy like "INFO".

Thanks.
Seems to be working! Excellent.
The only thing missing is a New Releases category (which lists the
latest podcast in the subscribed casts).

If the plugin is installed correctly you should see it as an option in
the "Plugins" section of your LMS server settings. On that plugin
settings page you should see an option to enter your email and Pocket
Casts password. When you save/apply the settings page the plugin will
login to Pocket Casts and save an auth token for your Pocket Casts
account. If that works correctly the settings page should change to show
the email address of the logged in account and a checkbox to let you
logout of that account if you choose.

Once logged in navigating to the plugin in the LMS "Apps" section should
show you the options for Up Next, subscriptions, etc.

Thanks for this. But, I'm confused how to use it!
When you say 'Login to Pocket Casts', do you mean via the pocket casts
webpage?
It doesn't seem to appear/work as other plugins do by being controllable
via the lms web gui. Is that right?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Preannounce: Sprocket - Pocket Casts plugin

2019-12-26 Thread AxxelH

I kept hoping someone else would write this plugin, but got tired of
waiting...

"Sprocket" is a plugin that uses the undocumented APIs of the Pocket
Casts web player to allow you to listen to your Pocket Casts
subscriptions via LMS/Squeezebox/etc.

What works for me:

- Login to Pocket Casts, without having to store your password (it
remains to be seen if the Pocket Casts auth token ever expires).

- Browsing your Pocket Casts "Up Next" playlist and adding episodes from
Up Next to the current LMS playlist.

- Browsing of subscribed podcasts, including unlistened, in progress and
starred episodes.

- (Optional) Synchronizing episode playback status and position with
Pocket Casts.

- (Optional) Marking any episode currently playing on Squeezebox as the
"current" episode in "Up Next".

- (Optional) "Trick play" skip within episodes.

- (Optional) Variable speed playback (one speed for all episodes) using
nothing but LMS built-in tools (sox). Quality is not as good as Pocket
Casts mobile apps, but I find 1.1x-1.9x to be quite listenable.

To head off some possible feature requests, I should also mention what I
have no plans or interest in adding:

- Subscription management or podcast discovery from the various
Squeezebox interfaces.

- Additional "Up Next" queue synchronization or management.

The post title says "preannounce", but in reality that just means I
haven't decided if I want to set up a repository and commit to
maintaining this. Those capable of manually installing the plugin will
find a 0.1 release attached here.

With that, a number of important caveats:

- I've had this operational only for a few days of listening of a few
podcasts. Bug reports are welcome, but this is a "use at your own risk"
project, especially with the options that allow synchronization with
Pocket Casts.

- I've only tested on my Linux server, I have no idea if it works for
Windows/OSX/etc. and no way to test.

- I'm not committing to supporting this, I just wanted something that
worked for me. If someone wants to adopt this and run with it reach out
to me. Code is BSD 3-clause license.
