I think you're using the best solution so maybe worth posting in the BBC
iplayer to see what's happening

There are a few posts about buffering issues and solutions.. what is LMS
running on?

Thanks. Good to know that at least I am running the right iPlayer
version etc..

Am running LMS 7.7.5 on a Win7 64bit dual core 3.1GHz i3-2100 desktop
with 8GB ram and SSD. It otherwise works very well!

It seems that a lot of people are having buffering problems, and for me
at least there are definitely good and bad days.
Guess will work through it all, just there are now so many posts, and I
don't even know which posts are relevant since I believe BBC have
changed there end several times over the last few months.

Pi2 setup with max2play which sets up the lms server (and/or squeezelite

Works great as its a low power 24/7 setup

Not sure how it would compare to your set up but 1gb ram makes it pretty

I agree with this suggestion - you should post on an existing BBCiPlayer
thread as this thread title doesn't highlight your issue is really
rebuffering and not which hardware or URLs.

There is some consensus on what can be done to reduce the rebuffering
effect such as changing DNS server.

The rebuffering issue is particularly annoying because it seems to be
network related either with BBC servers and or DNS updates and the
rebuffering problem become prevalent for a burst of time (which for me
usually last only a few hours) and then goes away. This means if you
make a change and rebuffering "stops" - you cannot be sure that the fix
has worked or it is just a "good" time.

Will take your advice and post on a rebuffering thread. But FYI I
changed the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and it is still terrible.
Radio 4 has re-buffered several times this morning already... I can't
believe BBC are this bad and it has been going on for months... I will
also try the radiofeeds suggested in a previous post.

happened before this. Any idea what this all means?

I am now logging as above, and have just had a bout of "bad behaviour"
from BBC R2 and R4. Log file attached. Approximate times when it
rebuffered are:

9:17:30 (not after 9:18:00)
9:43:00 (v approx)
10:39:00
10:40:10
10:40:40
10:41:30

On one of them (I think 10:40:10) it stopped altogether and I had to
press Play again. There are quite a few errors in the log file and I
have no idea what they mean.

I also looked at the results of "ipconfig /all" which shows that DNS
servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 are being used. Any help much
appreciated...

The log had two sorts of errors which triggered the rebuffering

1. Timeout - this timeout is controlled by WebUI
Settings/Advanced/Network/Radio Station Timeout - if it is 3 or less
can you try increasings it to say 10.
2. Failure to connect but there are Radiovis error functionality around
the same time - can you disable Radiovis in Plugin settings to if
problem is related in some way.

The Radio Station Timeout is already set to 15 which I guess is long
enough from what you say. This must be the default as I don't think I
ever changed it. There is also a "Radio Station Buffer Seconds" which is
set to 3. I'll change this to 15, which I suspect will just mask the
problem, to some extent at least.

I can't find a Radiovis plugin in Settings\PlugIns, although I searched
my hard drive and found a file ...\Plugins\BBCiPlayer\RadioVis.pm, so it
would appear to be part of the BBC iPlayer plugin itself. The only other
plugins that may be of interest are all Logitech ones .. Radio v1.0,
RadioIO v1.0, TuneIn Radio v2.0, but I suspect that they aren't
relevant.

Justr in case - keep server.asynchhttp is set to INFO and check for
"timeout" log message You had one in your log which means one of your
3 rebuffer was caused by timeout and it had no associated Radiovis

Rebuffer occurs due to underrun and this is only logged explicitly if
you have log player.source set to INFO or DEBUG

The "timeout" message you logged indicate that BBC did not respond with
requested data which means player will run out of data and you'll get
"uynderrun". IIRC the current BBCiPlayer HLS plugin closes the stream if
it gets a "timeout" and doesn't try to recover.

If the "Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (147) Error: Select task
failed calling" message appears when using the BBCiPlayer plugin playing
a hLS stream - it is "normal" due to waythe plugin has implemented HLS.

I think this is the fundamental issue: why does the BBC fail to respond
and when this has happened on my system I have tried modifying the
plugin to repeat the request but BBC doesn't respond and it still times
out. I don't know if it is an implementation error in Plugin, DNS or BBC
issue because I haven't had time to investigate in more detail and the
problem will not reproduce on demand.

I've observed similar glitches when loading a webpage on the PC starts
the buffering . nothing consistent but it happens.

2015-06-20 Thread sjalloq

I just wanted to add to this thread. I'm seeing the same sort of
dropouts and issues as others here.

I've enabled logging of plugin.bbciplayer.hls. I've been watching the
log stream while I try to listen and the dropouts always seem to
coincide with a larger number of chunks being received. Similar to the
post by rbl, whenever I see 4 new chunks received and the "merged
chunklist" string, the sound drops out.

Merged chunklist can happens without errors so it is not defintiive.

To try to get a more info on the type of fault you are experiencing, you
need to enable more logging to INFO the following
server.asynchttp
server.asyncdns
player.source

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] What is the best way to get BBC Radio these days (from the UK)?

2015-06-20 Thread sjalloq

It's definitely related to having a chunk list of 5. Every time I get
"merged chunklist now 5 chunks" it underruns. I've been seeing the
following type of warnings today quite a bit so perhaps there are
requests going on in the background that cause a process to timeout.
I've tried to disable mysqueezebox in settings but it obviously is still
running trying to sync. After this underrun, the stream stopped
completely.

You haven't enabled all the log I asked for.

You need to enable the server.asynchttp to be sure underrun is caused by
timeout and not an LMS issue - if timeout then it is the BBC not
responding.

And those two network loggers were enabled already and should be in the
log I uploaded. There might be some noise in there as I was playing
with the logs to see what they output. Today, I've just started the
live feed of BBC R1 and it buffered on startupand I was about to say
not since, but it has just done it. I'll attach a clean log of today's
activity.

OK, an update from my side. This evening I've had a play and tried a
few things. I'm currently listening to the R1 stream via both my
Logitech Squeezeblox Classic and Squeezeplay on OS X. I've also
installed LMS 7.8.1 on an Ubuntu VM on my server.

Squeezeplay is fine.
My Squeezebox is dropping out all over the place.

2015-06-22 Thread Giza2020

I think I'm reaching a similar conclusion. i think my boom is causing
the buffering in my sync'd setup up with a squeezelite player on a pi.

I'm wondering if the boom requires a better wifi signal than the pi due
to the need to transcode the format but the pi doesn't?

Boom wifi signal is about 50% or up to 65%

Pi is about 60%

You cannot compare %'s from different devices as IIRC there is no
standard method.

Have you run the network test on your boom (Boom menu

No I haven't done that for a while!.. I'll give it a try later .. I
guess the higher data rate the better the test?

Cheers

Yes and No. Expect 100% up to a certain speed but above some speed
connection will deteriorate. You can test if orientation of Boom affects
this. Transcoded streams into Flac typically need about 50% compression
so required datarate would be about 750kbps (since the BBC now uses
48Khz).

To check what is happening enable player.source to log occurrences of
underrun. Enable logging of sync to see what is happening when
resyncing.

Ok i was getting 100% up to 1000kbps and then dropping to 40 - 50% for
1500 and then drops to 20 -30% for 2000k ..need to s3e. What happens
when sync'd but wondering if this is normal. .moved right up next to the
router and the numbers rose but not a huge amount

So for a single Flac stream of 750kbps your Boom is OK.

Depending on the router antenna design right up close to router can be a
weak spot in signal strength - dipole (short straight antenna) have a
doughnut shaped signal so there is a hole in the middle so right close
to the dipole does not necessarily have the best signal.

More likely is you wifi network as a whole is the problem - sending
multiple data streams to sync players (as synced packets go in high
traffic bursts) and it is possible another player has a bad signal ,
demanding retranmissions and affecting all other players. If your LMS
server is also wireless - then it will compound problem.

Thanks Bpa

So my lms is connected via homeplugs

Router is an asus rt56u and i just moved to the same room as the router
itself.

I can't look at the squeezelite networks test on the pi because i can't
find the network test option.

So are you saying the boom should be smashing those network tests on all
levels of data?

Homeplugs have their own problems - I have a set as well.

If in the same room better to test with a cable to determine.

Network test is a specific SB h/w player feature. Squeezelite is a small
Linux computer so any network test will do.

Not with wireless and possibly not above 1500kbps. Boom has a small
processor and it has its limits but should be able to handle WAV
(1500kbps) with good signal/cable . If your boom can do 750kbps at 100%
there is no need to go faster unless you are sending WAV or AIFF.

I have been using this lately and it does seem a lot better. Bitrate
128Kbps except Radio 3 which is 320Kbps.

Most are trying to get away from relying on the MP3 feeds though.

of course, and I'd love to too, but they don't work! At least these mp3
streams are reasonably reliable. I'll give it another month or so and
try the "proper" higher bitrate streams and see if the BBC have go their
act in order yet ...

I'm currently not experiencing any problems with triode' iplayer. I'm
using the fmpg variation with tplink powerline homeplugs between my
touch and my rpi2 which is hosting squeezeplug/max2play and a 6Meg
broadband connection.

That said, what does drop is the mp3 logitech bbc radio feeds - this may
well be less stable from the bbc end?

It has been better lately, but not perfect. What is the "fmpg

For clarity - it is ffmpeg not fmpg
