Recently, I received questions regarding costs for advertising commercial events on PoloniaSFO. I would like to inform everyone that the businesses organizing events for profit are asked to donate money to a non profit Polish organization. Yes, they can say that Lewandowski wants money for informing people, but Lewandowski had built this information structure as volunteer and wants to use the money for Polish non profit organization of his choice. The money is paid directly to the organization. Recently, the Polish school in Orinda received $200 and I have a promise of another $200 for Polish American Congress. Because voluntary contributions are rather small, this is one of the ways to gather the funds. I think this is fair. ### 3. Hello, My name is Mira Szymaniak. I am a graduate student at the University of Szczecin. My Master's thesis I am gathering materials for are titled -- "Poles in America". I think that it is very interesting subject, and that's why I want to write about it. Now I am trying to get some information about Poles in US. I hope that you can help me. Could you please send me any information about your organization, i.e.: 1. when your organization was founded 2. how many people are there 3. what are you doing there 4. anything interesting, what I can use in my thesis Thank you for your help. Important -- FAX THE GERMANS
Dear PoloniaSFO mailing list members: I am forwarding a plea from John Radzilowski to send a fax to influence the German government position in the slave labor compensation negotiations. The Embassy fax is already busy, but please try to get yours in by sending e-mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Edmund Lewandowski (fwd)=== Dear Friends: As you may already know, negotiations over compensation for those enslaved by Nazi Germany during World War II and the Holocaust are being carried out. Public statements by the parties involved are disturbing. The amount that is being offered to victims of the Nazi slavery policy is pitifully small. Worse yet, many victims, especially those who were enslaved on German government projects and in agriculture, are being totally ignored. The German government is now trying to pressure some of the parties involved in the negotiation to drop their demands by threatening to block membership in the European Union. There are many tens of thousands of former slave-labor victims still alive. Many live in poverty. Can we stand idle while these people are denied justice and closure for a crime that destroyed so many lives? Many of these people are our neighbors, our family, members of our communities. None of our "leaders" seems willing to stand up for these people, to see justice is done. That leaves it up to us. The conditions these slave labor victims had to endure was horrific and often fatal. They were beaten, shot, starved, raped. In one case, uncovered by Time Magazine International earlier this year, Polish and Ukrainian women enslaved by Volkswagen had their children forcibly taken away so they would not be "distracted" from their work. Many of the children were infants and newborns. The children were placed in a "home" run by Volkswagen. They received no food and no care. Many of the children, especially the infants and newborns, slowly starved to death in their own filth while company officials watched. Unfortunately, Germany and the huge German corporations that profited from so much death and suffering have never been called to account. After the war, the German nurse who ran Volkswagen's "murder home" was rehired as by the company as a social worker! This is the type of action that cries out for justice. On December 1, 1999, you have an opportunity to make your voice heard. DECEMBER 1 is "FAX THE GERMANS DAY." Each one of you is urged to fax the German embassy and let the German government know that these victims must be treated with justice. Below you will find a form letter. You may modify it as you see fit. Let them know your ethnic background if you wish. But use it! Pass it on to family, friends, colleagues. Anyone who has e-mail. On December 1, 1999, at any time during the day, fax this letter with your signature to the German Embassy at the number listed on the letter. (If you don't get through the first time, try the alternate number; if both are busy keep trying.) This is the only way our voices will be heard. This is only way to show that we will not stand by while these men and women and their families are victimized yet again. Remember December 1! FAX FOR JUSTICE! FAX THE GERMANS! Thank You! P.S. These days, there are many e-mail hoaxes. This is not one of them. The authors of this letter are a small group of Polish Americans, unaffiliated with any government or organization, who want to see justice done for all victims of Nazism. If you wish to confirm the authenticity of this notice or if you have questions regarding this issue, please contact John Radzilowski: [EMAIL PROTECTED] H.E. Juergen Chrobog, Ambassador Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany 4645 Reservoir Road Northwest Washington, D.C. 20007 FAX: 202-298-4249 (alternate: [202] 298-4391) Dear Ambassador Chrobog: I am writing to express my deep concern about the ongoing negotiations regarding compensation for forced and slave laborers from the Second World War. The most recent negotiation sessions, in Washington in October and Bonn in November, have shown the proposed settlement to be seriously flawed. It does not include forced agricultural, domestic, and government workers; makes no provision for those who died either during the war or after it; and offers a very small amount of compensation, minuscule in comparison to the suffering that the laborers endured at German hands. First and foremost, for a settlement to bring any sense of closure, it must include compensation for those who were forced to work on farms, as domestics, or on government projects. These victims suffered as much as those who were forced to work in industrial enterprises. Polish and Ukrainian peasants taken by Germany to work on farms were often beaten, starved, or raped. They, too, must be compensated. Second, any settlement should provide compensation to the heirs of those who were slave or forced laborers

November 16 is the date for new round of negotiations on compensation for Slave and Forced Labor under the NAZI Germany. The last round excluded agricultural, domestic and government laborers. In addition, the figures proposed by the German delegation were unacceptable and insulting to those who suffered. Polish American Congress asks all Polish Americans to write to the President Clinton. DO IT NOW. You can make a difference! Send it to the e-mail address below. === [EMAIL PROTECTED] William J. Clinton President of the United States The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mr. President: As a Polish American, I am writing to you to express my great disappointment with the results of the meeting, October 6-7 at the Department of State, chaired by Mr. Stuart Eizenstat, on the matter of addressing a reasonable compensation for survivors of slave and forced labor in countries occupied by Nazi Germany, during WW II. The meeting produced no meaningful proposal, in fact it did create a new problem by seeming to remove eligibility for agricultural, domestic, municipal and government workers. Considering that most of the slave and forced laborers were taken from lands of the pre-war Polish Republic, it is essential that the U.S. Government be fully aware of the concerns that Americans of Polish heritage have about this important issue. Mr. President, I am asking you to make every effort to persuade the German government and those companies that used slave labor, as well as forced labor, that they have a moral and legal obligation to address the issue of compensation to ALL victims for their work, suffering and inhumane treatment. Your leadership will ensure the inclusion of all individuals that had been taken as slave or forced laborers against their will, including those currently living in the United States. Sincerely, Your Name Your Address # 3. The Polish Saturday School and The San Jose Polish Scouts cordially invite you to the Traditional "Andrzejki" Dance on Saturday 11/27/1999 from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM at the St. Brother Albert Parish Hall, 10250 Clayton Road in San Jose. Great music, delicious Polish food and lots of attractions. Because the dance celebrates the feast of first name "Andrzej", a special gift for all Andrews will be offered. Broadcast watchdog rebukes Howard Stern. Howard Stern doesn't insult retarded people, Canada's broadcast watchdog ruled yesterday, but he does break rules by insulting Poles. In two rulings by the Canadian Broadcast Standard Council, an industry-run body, New York based radio "shock-jock" Stern (whose show is carried in Toronto on FM station Q107) was found guilty on one charge and not guilty on another. The council ruled that he did not contravene any of Canada's broadcast codes when he referred to his staff as "retards" and "retarded". The council was less tolerant of Stern's comments that "Poles hate Jews", which was found to be in breach of ethics codes. "This accusation of an entire people that they hate other national groupis in this sense abusively discriminatory vis a vis persons of Polish nationality". -Doug Saunders The Globe and Mail, Tuesday, August 31, 1999. We need a bulletin board or chat room or something similar for communication between people from this list. Recently I have received several inquiries from people looking for a job or trying to find out something about Polonia in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please volunteer to set up such list. We have many electronic engineers on this distribution. I hope somebody would help. # -- * Your privacy is preserved by sending a Blind Carbon Copy (BCC) to each participant * If you wish to be removed from PoloniaSFO distribution list send a message "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] * If you have changed your e-mail address send me a message requesting the change on the distribution list (include your phone # for verification) or call me or fax me your request at 1-650-341-7359 The entire calendar of events can be seen on the Internet at: http://members.aol.com/poloniasfo or at http://www.dnai.com/~salski/PoloniaSFO/PoloniaSFOandTST.htm
