cups 1.2.4p2 - USB/parallel print problem

2006-10-06 Thread Andy Wingate
4.0-current i386:

When attempting to print using cups 1.2.4p2 to the Parallel or USB
port, the print job (and printer) stops with errors such as Unable
to open parallel port device file /dev/lpt0: Permission denied or
Unable to open USB device usb:/dev/ulpt0: Permission denied.

I was able to print via these ports using the previous port of cups
(1.1.23p8) but no longer can with 1.2.4p2. I had set the parallel
printer up using the previous version of cups but the port no longer
appears to be listed in the 'Device' menu.

Otherwise, there are a number of improvements that look very useful
and more user friendly.

  not being saved.

I tried saving a new text document with few words in it and it did the
same, the file save window flashes and nothing happens.

It seems happy to save files as differing versions of Word and tried
to save under the first line of the document (rather than the
filename) for DocBook XML (which failed) but other formats seem to
make swriter reset its Save as box.

scalc loaded in files OK but gave a blank list of character sets for
dBase format saving and then an import/export error but successfully
saved as dif, xls (various), slk but failed on csv, html, xml and ods.
Charts appeared OK.

simpress sets up its toolbars and shows the first slide but then seems
to hang, not drawing the window either side of the slide. This is when
starting from empty or importing from PowerPoint. If I chose a
transition during the creation phase, it would hang there before
generating the main window.

Export as PDF has worked OK from swriter.

I was previously successfully using the port of the linux version of
2.0.2 under emulation but it is great to see a native version taking
shape.

Seems OK here on i386. I have seen the following error printed out a
few times but I'm not sure what precipitates it:

(firefox-bin:12306): GLib-WARNING **: Idle source dispatched without callback
You must call g_source_set_callback().

Otherwise, everything seems to be working as it should do.

 Works on -current i386.

In general it seems fine except for crashing out with Signal 11 when
printing. The file/printout is completed but Firefox exits.

That and the remaining mentions of Deer Park in error boxes (which
Kurt suggested Bernd may already be fully aware of) are the only
problems I have with it.

If people want this in it needs testing and positive feedback to the

With GTK2, the text input fields don't accept Emacs editing commands
any longer, which is very crippling at least for me.

Oh, Google to the rescue, putting

 gtk-key-theme-name = Emacs

 into ~/.gtkrc-2.0 re-enables this for GTK2 applications.
(Is there an environment variable for this?)

Aha, thanks.. I can now use ctrl-u again before pasting without
cursing as 'View source' appears. Which will help me use galeon as
well.

I may now be truly happy with the gtk2 version.
