bluegrass whatever
What people see or hear in this act, I don't get. Oh, wait, they have women who bare parts of thier bodies. That must be it. Matt "New wave dance craze it's still rock and roll to me" Benz Oh jeez, Matt, since when do you start complaining about women on stage showing parts of their bodies? I'm on digest so I'm kinda jumping in on the tail end of the whole bluegrass hack band stealing jobs from the real guys thing, but it strikes me as incredibly distasteful. Should there be a bluegrass INS to keep all those outsiders from stealing jobs from our boys? Begin the thinning of the herd!! Christ, and people ask me why we (tmp) don't play bluegrass festivals. Because no one in any seedy rock club in America is going to judge whether we're fit to represent a entire genre. Why are people in the bluegrass clique so defensive and insular? I hate to be all hippie, but isn't music supposed to be unifying and all that? What the hell is with all this snide divisive shit? Let damn Darius Rucker play the mandolin fer chrissakes. It's an instrument, not the holy grail. cherilyn.
Re: Single Most Influential 20th Century Pop Musician
Yow, tough stuff. I'm inclinded to offer up (as Brad did) Bing Crosby, who pioneered how to sing pop into a microphone. Almost all pop singers use aspects of techniques he pioneered, from Elvis to Shania to Sinatra to Al Green. Because I got into a similar discussion yesterday in my bar with a CSNY advocate, I gotta chuck in Brian Wilson. In terms of harmony and arranging, he pretty much rewrote pop. Shame about the going bonkers thing. cherilyn.
re: SXSW finally
Thanks guys... I think the winner is "More Record Titles About Chickens." Oy. --cherilyn.
SXSW finally
Oh lord. Nobody cares about my SXSW recap now cause I took so long. I had to go and attend to some, um, business right after the event so I wasn't around to report, but now I have some things to say. Okay -- 1) Thanks to everyone for coming to the BBQ. How much does it rock to have so many great bands in my own damn yard? It was really cool meeting some of y'all that I hadn't met before. And then my pals Don, Linda, Meshel, Terie, Andre, gawd everyone. All you guys -- you make SXSW for me. It's a freakin' reunion. 2) Why have I not met Neil Weiss yet? I'm gonna kick his ass in the teeth if I ever do. 3) I saw not a single band that I didn't know the whole damn week. This is how lame I am. BUT, my world was rocked, as usual, by my main men the Wacos, by bastard cousins Split Lip Rayfield, and by the sexiest men in alt.country the Ex-Husbands. 4) Highlights included dirty dancing and planning new alt.country porno mag with Neko Case, swigging Pepto-Bismal with a beer chaser onstage (punkrock, y'know), tragically throwing myself at Joey Burns (what else is new), being a part of the Pine Valley Cosmonauts thing, having my top during our showcase stay up (the miracle of duct tape), debuting the new TMP Chad Hamilton song over and over and over, and No.1 without a doubt: Sunday night after PVC -- Kiss cover band Rip Destroy followed by Neil Diamond cover band The Diamond Smugglers at Emos. One of the most fun nights of my recent memory. Awesome. Thanks to Stacey for putting up these fotos: http://www.hellcountry.com/twangfluff/sxsw99.htm But, my god, am I eating Jonny's ear in our pic? Good lord. Were there any other picture sites that I missed? Um, if anyone cares in Meat Purveyors news the new record has been moved up two months, so a) it will come out the beginning of July, b) this month I have no life as it has not been started yet, and c) could someone please for the love of christ send me an album title suggestion that will beat Jo's "When Chickens Cry." Please please please Oh, last thing I swear then I will go back to lurking (I am _not_ an "ex-P2'er" as recently described, I just like to watch) -- we're touring the midwest with SLR in the Monsters (or Mutants) of Bluegrass tour June 16-27. As always, if you want info email [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll put you on the goofy newsletter thing. xoxo, cherilyn, meat purveyor.

Re: Daniel Johnston
influential '80's avant-pop band Glass Eye (along with K McCarty and Stella Weir). Which also included some members of the Meat Purveyors?? No, we just cover their song, "Dempsey Nash." Or, as they spell it, "Dimsey Naish." Or something like that. Although Purveyor Bill is on many fine Daniel Johnston records including the latest. Cherilyn (who considers Daniels resurfacing the best thing to happen to Austin music in 98 and I'll stand on Fastball's coffee table in my Manolos and say so)
Re: Bloodshot party
On Mon, 25 Jan 1999, the subject of many a Meat Purveyor song wrote Just to let y'all know, our little love letter to my former future ex-husband is coming along nicely and will be good and ready by the P2 SXSW BBQ. Which brings me to the party okay, I'm finally sending out the invite info to the mailing list from last year (let me know if you don't get one and you want one). It's gonna be Thursday the 18th so's not to conflict with the ND party. That means everyone must get to Austin by Wednesday night. OK? OK! Anyway, details are in the email going out right about now. Luv, cherilyn, meat purveyor. p.s. thanks a bazillion to everyone who thought of us for the 1998 P2 poll. It felt real nice to be in such good company. p.p.s. recording I'm espcially excited about right now: Daniel Johnston's new one. Good god almighty.
