Re: Hey KC? Frogpond?
I'll chime in with my one cent's worth of info...though I haven't heard the band either. David probably has them pegged pretty well, compared to what I've heard about the band. The new Frogpond disc is due for release May 4 on Columbia. It's titled *Safe Ride Home* Also, the offshoot Exit 159 that both Bill S. and David mentioned (which I think now has two locally released discs) just won the Best Alternative/Rock Band award at the Kansas City/Lawrence Area Music Awards (Klammies). (David, for what it's worth, the Weekly Pitch spells the leader's name Kristi Stremel). BTW, another Klammies winner of note was Arthur Dodge the Horsefeathers as Best Country/Bluegrass Band *and* Best Folk Act. Anyone know anything about 'em? Cantwell? Do you dip in this part of the local-music pool? Wowee. I love when this happens. NW
Re: Steve Earle and Del McCoury Band over America
At 02:53 PM 3/31/99 -0600, CK wrote: I'm guessing either I miss alot of Trains, which is on the Tom T Hall Project or I washed my face in the morning dew which she did in Nashville. And Bill replied: Bingo. "I Washed My Face in the Morning Dew". Let me chime in and confirm it was "Morning Dew" -- most certainly ragged but very very right. I felt fortunate we heard two tunes from Iris, who certainly isn't one to linger on stage any longer than she has to. Not much I can add to Bill's as-usual observant report of the KC show. One thought: I'm recalling the recent thread about best guitar pickers that compared Earle's talents to Del McCoury, and am thinking that maybe Steve's even braver to play mandolin on the same stage as Ronnie McCoury. No disrespect whatsoever meant toward Earle, whose chop I like just fine. But I'd have to say that young Mr. McCoury (isn't he a recent IBMA mando guy of the year?) makes Steve -- and probably a lot of others who'd make greater claims for their playing than Steve ever would -- look pretty ham-fisted. Oh, and this: Given Earle propensity for using the same jokes show-to-show, I'll dutifully report that we also heard that the 20th Maine saved us all from sounding like Steve Del 'n' boys -- thanks for spoiling the punchline, Chicago folks (g), and for those on down the road from us, sorry if I'm ruining it for you. And I'll also dutifully report that Earle dedicated "Copperhead Road" to the guy who ceaslessly hollered for it all evening long -- quote: "Here you go, asshole." Y'know, I can't in my wildest dreams imagine Del McCoury ever doing anything even remotely like that. Hey, Junior, we missed you at Roadhouse Ruby's -- hope your Lawrence show with FW and Deke Dickerson was hot! Jack Copeland Shawnee, Kansas
John Prine news
Plucked the following from Monday's Billboard website news...thought it might be of interest throughout (sorry about the screwy formatting). *** Singer/songwriter John Prine has finished scenes for a Miramax film, "Daddy And Them," written and directed by Billy Bob Thornton. Prine plays Thornton's brother in the comedy, which is due this fall and also features Laura Dern and Ben Affleck. Meanwhile, Prine has begun recording "In Spite Of Ourselves," a duets album of classic country material due in late summer on Oh Boy Records. Among those joining Prine on the album are Iris DeMent, Lucinda Williams, Nanci Griffith, and Connie Smith. Finally, Prine will tour this spring after one-and-a-half years off. The trek starts March 25 in Bristol, Tenn., and includes June dates at the Fleadh Festivals in San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. Prine will hit Europe in July and August. *** Jack Copeland Shawnee, Kansas "I tried to sing rock for awhile. But when you have a hillbilly accent like mine, it's hard to sing 'Cold as Ice.' Re: KC area McCoury!
Junior wrote: In keeping with the booking traditions of that most beloved of KC venues, the McCoury band is scheduled right between Robin Trower and the Chippendale Dancers!!! Alright! And Larry replied: Why they'd want to play some nightclub in front of a bunch of drunk Kansans instead of a group of quiet, appreciative Iowans is beyond me. g Well, I suspect this'll be a quietly appreciated show, given that we'll be recovering from Robin Trower and pensively anticipating those Chippendales. And given your description of Iowans, Larry, I suspect Junior and Bill Silvers now think I must be a transplant from that fair state, given that I'm as prone to lurking in conversation as I am on this list, and MUCH LESS prone to drink! g But I'm doing much better now.
