Mike and David are undoubtedly on the same wavelength more

arts and ideas, THE TOWER OF BABEL. A multilingual and multicultural
publication that is published and edited by MALCOLM LAWRENCE, THE TOWER

www.towerofbabel.com.

THE DRAGONíS ROAR will kick off an expansion of THE TOWER OF BABELíS
ëMusic Section.í THE DRAGONíS ROAR will cover everything from the
sharper, edgier flavor of the West Coast Honky Tonk Sound to the myriad
of forms of traditional American Roots music including Bluegrass, Rock
ëní Roll, Mountain Music, Western Swing, Cowboy Tunes and everything in
between. The ëHonky Tonk Divisioní of THE TOWER OF BABEL will go beyond
the hype and marketing of todayís pop-goes-the-country fluff to uncover
the many distinctive layers of REAL CW and roots music.

The first installment of THE DRAGONíS ROAR introduces readers to one of
the West Coastís most talented up-and-comers, CISCO. A native of Fresno,
California in the fertile San Joaquin Valley that gave birth to the
independent BAKERSFIELD SOUND, Cisco defies current convention. More
like Bakersfield pioneer MERLE HAGGARD or Texas Outlaw WAYLON JENNINGS,
CISCO is as physically charismatic as a young ELVIS PRESLEY and as
dangerous and enticing as ëhillbilly deluxeí DWIGHT YOAKAM. Ruffling
feathers and stopping listeners in their tracks wherever he goes, heís
made a huge sensation with the release of his first studio project,

Boston area only tonight Tommy Womack

1999-03-01 Thread Joyce Linehan

Hi. Tommy Womack and Steve Camden have had a heap of trouble on their
little tour for the past few days. Bad starters, keys locked in cars, bad
directions - you name it, it's happened. They were supposed to play at
the Kendall in Cambridge last night. They showed up two hours after their
allotted time slot (for a really sad story, ask Tommy about driving around
Cambridge looking for a phone to call Stacy and tell her their status, and
then finding one phone, which fell apaprt in his hands).

Anyway, they're going to play tonight at the Kendall at 9:30. It's last
minute, but any help my fellow Bostonians could give in getting the world
out would be greatly appreciated. It would be nice, if after all these
guys have been through, at least a dozen people showed up.

I would imagine that any of you who were at Tommy's last Boston show in
November were as blown away as I was.

On a happier note, I don't think anyone has mentioned HBO's new series

soundtrack.
The opening sequence uses A3's "Woke Up This Morning" and during the
first
three weeks viewers have heard Nick Lowe's "The Beast In Me", Booker T

the MGs songs, and numerous other tunes which should be of interest to

I have to second the recommendation of this show, for its music as well as

Well, I'll say it: No, there won't be one in the future.

Now, now, you can never be too sure. Our biggest local mainstream
country
station - CMA Large Market Station Of The Year WUBE-FM - recently
allocated
a hefty 2-hour time slot each week to classic country. Of course, it's
6-8a
Sunday morning, and "classic" means from the 1980s...

There is another commercial country station in the Boston market - WCAV in
Brockton. They have a great Sunday night show, hosted by Ed the Detective.
Lots of old stuff, and good new stuff, though I don't think he's so much
into the alt.country/rock. Lately the rest of the week they've mainly been
using syndicated programs, I hae heard (from John Lincoln Wright) that
they're coming off the satellite soon. That could be good. PLUS, listing
to WCAV, one gets to hear the Brockton Enterprise jingle, which is truly
the worst jingle ever.

Though Steve Morse's article had some inaccuracies, it's really nice to see
those Harvard Hillbillies get some attention. I think people forget about
them because they've been around for so damn long. I love a show that will
play Alan Jackson into Dale Watson into Patty Loveless in Danni Leigh.
It's worth getting up on Saturday mornings to listen to. Plus, they're
the nicest guys in the world.

WKLB sponsored a show this summer that Mike Ireland played at. It was very
funny having to explain who Mike was so the lady from the station could
introduce him. She was very impressed when I told her they had an album
out on Sire. I think she thought they were from North Quincy or something.

over there interested in doing shows. I figured I would post, just in case
any of you English have any advice to give about putting a show or two
together over there in that time frame. Private email is good. Thanks.

Boston question - 78 rpm

1999-01-20 Thread Joyce Linehan

I know there was a thread about this recently, but I didn't have one then,
so I wasn't paying attention. Does anyone know of anyplace in New england
where I can get a 78 player repaired? Thanks.
