P2-ers whom have stayed at my place will testify that I have a fondness for
hatch Show posters, as my flat is graced with them, including the famous "Roy
 Acuff For Governor" poster.

Whenever in Nashville, it's one of my prime stops.

Is there a web site for the place?

I'm really glad you brought this up because just last week I was listening
to Merle's Jimmie Rodgers tribute LP, and it occurred to me that Merle's
phrasing kinda sounded like the Binger. So, I suppose the next question is:
Has Merle ever covered a song associated with Crosby?

Pennies from Heaven is a song the Hag does. Its on his
"Out Among the Stars" LP.

He also does the song is concert some.

I think Crosby did this one.

Query: What is the song David Allen Coe is most knows for?
 Thank you.
 JNS

It think "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" is one that
is pretty well know although it was written by Steve Goodman.

Some of the songs Coe wrote-
"Take this Job and Shove it" and
"Would you lay with me (in a field of stone)"

Those I think are some of the most prominent.

I sorta liked the show myself. Of course anything bluegrass gets

Charles Sawtell-RIP

From Bluegrass-L

very sad.

I am very sad to inform you that Charles Sawtelle died Saturday night at
8pm
Pacific Time. He had been in Intensive Care for the last month at City
of Hope
Hospital in Duarte, California. His liver and kidneys finally couldn't
handle
the stress of all the medication and graft vs. host disease, a result of
his
bone marrow transplant of two years ago. He had been unconscious for
over
three weeks, with family and dear friends there to help any way they
could. In
the last few days he had been declining, and it was understood that he
wouldn't last long.

I don't know any further details at this point, such as funeral or
memorial
arrangements, but will post them as I know them.

It's hard to put into words the loss I feel. Charles was much more than
a
great musician. He was a dear friend to many, he was an inspiration and
a
mentor, he was funny and a good guy to be around, and he did a great job

living with dignity in the face of complicated and debilitating illness,

starting with the leukemia five years ago. A very generous person, a
quite
unique person. It has been amazing to see the level of care and concern
expressed by so many people for him. He touched a lot of people, and he
will
continue to touch us even now that he's gone. Rest in peace Charles my
friend.

Steve Earle and Del McCoury Band-D.C.

1999-03-19 Thread Stick

Well folks if Steve Earl and the Del McCoury Band come anywhere
close drop everything and see their show.

Two of the best days and nights of music I've seen in a long
time. Got to see them 2 nights at the Birchmere and a show
at the Borders Bookstore in downtown DC on Thursday afternoon.

From the tight band of Del McCoury's group to Steve Earle's
rasspy singing they are just plain having fun.

Both nights played pretty much "The Mountain" CD to
Steve doing a solo set and all different arrangments
of Steve and the Band.

One of the highlights was that they did a Bill Monroe
song "Lonesome Road Blues", and Steve said it
was so hard to play in Nashville because the great
Mac Wisman was sitting front row and watching the
show at the Station Inn.

At all three shows you had opportunities to get
signitures in which they signed and chatted
alittle about the shows.

Great couple of days. Met one new P2er at Borders,
so there are more everyday.

By the way the are on Connan O'bien show tonight NBC.

Jones update 8pm

After dealing with car wreck injuries for over a year,
Please wear your seat belt.

Singer George Jones Hurt in Crash

By JIM PATTERSON Associated Press Writer

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) -- Country singer George Jones
was in critical
condition Saturday after he smashed his
sport-utility vehicle into a
bridge near his home while talking on a cell phone
to his stepdaughter.

Jones, 67, lost control of his Lexus while rounding
a curve on Highway
 96, a curvy heavily-traveled two-lane road, and hit
the bridge abutment,
state police said. Police said Jones was not
wearing a seat belt.

It took rescuers about two hours to free him
following the 1:30 p.m.
accident, and he was taken by helicopter to
Vanderbilt University
 Medical Center in nearby Nashville.

Doctors said Jones suffered a collapsed lung,
ruptured his liver and had
internal bleeding. He was placed on a ventilator to
aid in his breathing.

Jones was unconscious when he was brought in and
doctors gave him
medication to keep him that way, Dr. John Morris
said.

``The body responds to this kind of injury much
better if we can control
the pain and the blood pressure and so on,'' he
said.

Morris offered no prognosis but said he expects
Jones will remain in
critical condition for at least one or two days.

Jones, famous for hits like ``He Stopped Loving Her
Today'' and ``The
Race is On,'' is generally considered one of the
finest country singers
ever. He was married for six years to the late
singer Tammy Wynette.
The pair were known as ``The King and Queen of
Country Music'' in
 the 1970s.

Since 1983, Jones has been married to Nancy Jones,
his manager.

Nicknamed ``Possum,'' Jones was born near Saratoga,
Texas. At 16, he
landed his first job as a musician, being paid
$17.50 a week to play
guitar with a husband-and-wife singing team in bars
and dance halls.

After two years in the Marines, he returned to
Texas and began a
recording career that has spanned 40 years, making
him one of country
 music's top stars.

Jones has battled alcoholism and drug abuse during
much of his life. He
was given the nickname ``No Show Jones'' for
failing to appear at so
many concerts and later recorded a song by that
name.

Jones was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame
in 1992. That
same year, country fans and the media voted ``He
Stopped Loving Her
Today'' the most popular country song of all time.
The 1980 weeper
was about a man whose love for a woman died only
when he did.

Jones has been working on a new album for Asylum
Records and is
also host of ``The George Jones Show'' on
television's The Nashville
 Network.

Evelyn Shriver, head of Asylum Records, Jones'
record label, said
Jones called her from his car five or 10 minutes
before the crash. He
was listening to seven new songs he had recorded
and was so excited
he wanted to play them for her over the phone but
could not get his
cassette player to work, she said.

She said his stepdaughter, Adina Estes, later told
her she was talking to
 him when the crash happened.

He's pulled through before, I hope he gets through this.

There has been some interesting dialogue on BGRASS-L about Steve Earle, the
new CD, and what bluegrass 'is' and what bluegrass 'is not'.

Yeah and I think some of them miss the point on BGRASS-L, its not what
is the music but how you enjoy the music.

I think any kind of music you have die in the wool fans of such music,
jazz, bluegrass, folk, ect and (they) will say what is and what isn't.
If a banjo isn't in the mix, alot would say that is not bluegrass.

With Steve Earle brings a whole new audience to bluegrass and anything
that broadens and helps the artist in bluegrass is a plus. Not to say one
person is on his or her so called album or CD.

If it sounds good to you then enjoy it the way you like and let the so called
(experts) in the field of music have there say. There is alot of music I don't
particulary care for but that does not give me the right to put down that
form of music.

I think anyone that puts it heart and soul into what there doing is key to
any thing done right. Music, work, hobbies, ect.
In music I think you really can tell what is real amd what is not.

To many damm people say what is this type and that, the hell with them
and enjoy what you like and maybe you can pass some of the type of
or artist along.

Hell I think that's what P2 is all about. Different music from all kinds
of different people.

I'm glad I got that off my chest.

Re: Did you see Lucinda on SNL???/ Gillian David on the Opry

Well, anyway, even though I did not see Lucinda on TV last night, I DID see
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings with Emmylou Harris on the televised
portion of the Grand Ole Opry. Wow!

By the way, HNC guy Daryle Singletary played a song that was reaaallly
country. Porter got very excited about that. And the other day on TNN,
tall hat guy Trace Adkins played several actual country songs. What's
 happening?

Well over the last three weeks at the Opry they have had a great lineup
of traditional and bluegrass groups.

Here are just the some that have played in the last 3 weeks. Emmylou Harris-
now 2 weeks in a row with last night Gillian Welch and David Rawlings,
Patty Loveless, Vince G., Jeff White, Ricky Skaggs, Loretta Lynn, Porter
Wagoner, Jim and Jesse, Joe Stampley, Osborne Brothers, Heather Myles,
Rodney Crowell, and many others that have made the last 3 weeks very
enjoyable.

The best thing is that with a C band satellite dish you can pick up this
show in stereo without the AM static.
